People could build a sort of mix of youtube and torrent tech, like popcorn or stremio but for short copyright free content. I dont know how to do it.

EncryptKeeper ,

…So PeerTube?

Kodemystic ,
@Kodemystic@lemmy.kodemystic.dev avatar

No you will still need to host Peertube on your server or VPS etc not even sure why they call it PEERtube because it’s clearly not peer to peer. What I’m talking about is a decentralized peer to peer streaming tool like Stremio (uses torrents) but instead of having movies, we could have you know small/average lenght videos like youtube, and also channels and so on.

Babalugats ,

Whatever happened to zeronet? Wasn’t that supposed to do that with many services as well as the whole thing in general?

I’m guessing it just never got enough users.

Edit - link zeronet.io

FractalsInfinite ,

Last release was just over 4 years ago and it seems it never truly recovered after that. While there other options they are either bad (IPFS) or lack publicity to catch on (DAT/Hypercore)

fne8w2ah ,

Sadly it’s been practically dead for a long while now.

smileyhead ,

But PeerTube is peer2peer, literally in the name. Every PeerTube video is automatically a torrent.

Kodemystic ,
@Kodemystic@lemmy.kodemystic.dev avatar

My bad it actually uses a combnation of hosting and peer to peer. But still its not fully decentralized as I was suggesting. Peertube instances need to be hosted and videos are uploaded to the instance and kept in the instance storage. So its not dully decentralized. Its actually more centralized than not it seems.

netchami ,

You mean BitChute but not filled with fascist garbage?

PyroNeurosis ,
@PyroNeurosis@lemmy.world avatar

There’s the rub, isn’t it? Fascists are the ones most actively seeking new platforms to move to after their removal from any other, meaning a lot of the start-up content has to be thoroughly filtered, which takes a lot of effor and resources away from growth.

netchami ,

Non-fascists should also just switch away from YouTube. We just need to outnumber the Nazis on alternative platforms like Odysee. BitChute is a hopeless case, but we actually have a chance on Odysee. PeerTube is great though, there are a lot instances that are free of Nazis. It has some other issues though. Sticking with YouTube definitely isn’t an option.

smileyhead ,

You mean PeerTube?

netchami ,

Yeah PeerTube is cool, but it has its own set of issues. 1. It’s very expensive for an individual to run an instance 2. The federation mechanism doesn’t really work 3. It’s just too fragmented to replace YouTube due to that fragmentation 4. The search is horrible, also because of the aforementioned issues. I am aware that Sepia Search exists, but it should be built in to PeerTube itself. In general, it’s not very friendly to new users. The entire UI/UX could use some improvements.

Chrome is used to get a tighter grip on the www and form it to Google's vision (one that is very anti consumer). If Chrome dies, it would be a net benefit for all.

800XL , to news in Google pulls the plug on uBlock Origin, leaving over 30 million Chrome users susceptible to intrusive ads

The only thing that runs Chrome is my work computer only because they installed it and who gives a fuck if they get hacked? I don’t even discern search results because I don’t get paid enough to care.

Lumisal ,

Just make sure your router is updated. I recommend gl.inet routers if you’re a beginner - easy to keep up to date and their version of OpenWRT has AdGuard installed. Malware can affect more than just the computer you use

800XL ,

I never do personal stuff or even search for non-work related stuff on the machine, and when I’m at home it’s on a guest network by itself on a different subnet. Outside of work hours I manually turn off wifi on the machine and block it on the router.

Uninstall Bing? When did Bing become an installable thing?

They probably mean your browser/search engine settings will actually be respected, instead of what sometimes happens now where you can have set everything to not use bing or edge but still certain MS software will launch a search in edge, using bing.

aBundleOfFerrets ,

These devices are honestly quite fast, the overhead is similar to the overhead on an entry level gaming PC (to be fair, that is still a substantial overhead, but people accept it)

The bigger problem with Windows is that the Steamdeck has some great battery optimization settings that seem like they’d be a pain to implement.

@twistedtxb@lemmy.ca avatar

Frankly MS doesn’t really care about as much about hardware considering the cost of production, as long as their services are profitable.

Sure they would prefer not to be outsold 2:1 but as long that Gamepass PC exists and sells well, they’re fine with this.

Orvanis ,

Exactly. Microsoft also has the benefit of double-dipping - they have Xbox, but they also get a healthy cut from PC as a vast majority of gamers are going to be running Windows.

This article feels very much like a fanboy wanting to keep the stupid “console wars” going, when really Microsoft is happy to just rake in the cash.

mephiska ,

vast majority of gamers are going to be running Windows.

Vast majority of PC gamers are on windows, yeah. But overall the PC gamer market and console gamer markets are similar. There's a lot of overlap too as PC gamers also have consoles.
