X plans to collect biometric information, job, education history for safety, security, and identification purposes. (thehackernews.com)

“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” The revised policy of X(Twitter) is expected to go into effect on September 29, 2023....

veloxy ,

This increasing interest in biometric data, not just from “X”, is concerning to say the least

veloxy ,

Because GitHub has load balances that direct traffic occasionally through a server hosted under Chinese jurisdiction.

Where the hell did you get that from? Do you have a source for that?

veloxy ,

I feel like this link is a scam itself lol

veloxy ,

If you’re downloading manually there aren’t really a lot of advantages to this I think, unless you search through 10 or more sites every time. For automated downloads using sonarr/radarr/lidarr/… it’s pretty mandatory.

US can cut building emissions by up to 91%, saving $100 billion a year in energy-related costs, modeling study shows::The US has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. To accomplish this goal, large cuts in emissions are necessary, especially in high-emission sectors like the building industry.

That seems to be the trend nowadays, repeating the same thing as if they were trying to meet a quota. Often I see articles about a single tweet of about 100 characters, just summarizing the tweet several times with no additional info. Generating an article with AI would probably be even better now, especially when it’s just a summary of a study.

For me personally it’s easier to watch a video than to read a blog post or whatever these days. That’s mostly because I can listen/watch while doing chores. However, if I need to use it later there’s just no way I can find it or find what was in it. I like the format of Theprimeagen in particular when he goes over blog posts, I can always refer to that when I want to. So I’d say:

  • videos as a replacement for written media: no
  • videos as an addition to written media: yes

I think Supabase does this well. The documentation is there, videos are more specific and lengthy

If your whole brand is based on being an asshole, I don’t see why it would be any different internally tbh

There are still plans with data caps in Belgium, this is limited to the “cheapest” plans though at about 30 EUR a month

veloxy ,

So that’s about 2.95M USD or 2.7M EUR, I wouldn’t go to prison for 18 years for that amount of money that’s for sure.

He’s probably having a fit over everyone blocking him from their feeds

Maybe his 4D chess move is trying to push everyone to federated apps, what a great guy!

What is with everyone’s obsession, government or company, to moderate the web. It’s seriously depressing and exhausting.

veloxy ,

I haven’t found any info on such regulation existing

In Belgium, the RRN (SSN) is considered confidential data and its use is restricted to specific purposes, typically related to administrative, legal, or public interest matters. To ask for RRN, you’d need authorization and it’s highly unlikely you’d get it just to validate someone’s social media account.

veloxy ,

Did they try turning it off and not on again? 🙃

I can differentiate situations depending on context

I think you’re https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1691693740254228741 though. It wasn’t addressed in the video.

veloxy ,

The fact that WireMin doesn’t redirect to https and the contact email is some weird gmail address says a lot. I also steer away from the web3 stuff in general.

This also seems like a poor way to advertise:

From all the google results I can find, It seems whoever posts this shit has a habit of removing it shortly after and reposting it later

veloxy ,

Google is full of similar posts, all linking to deleted posts. This is spam

veloxy ,

Do bad thing, say you handled bad thing wrongly, hope people forget bad thing.

veloxy ,

How is self-hosting in regards to resources (disk space, memory, network etc)? And does it need to be public?

veloxy ,

Ah thanks, I couldn’t find anything about it. I run all my stuff on a server behind a Tailscale network, so nothing is accessible without VPN access. I thought it might need connections from other instances.
