Mononon , to retrogaming in Anyone else remember Tyrian? Any other recommendations for classic games with a decent mobile port?

There’s tons.

  • The entire series of ACA Neogeo games.
  • The Sonic the hedgehog ports are awesome.
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night has an excellent port with controller support.
  • Arkanoid vs Space invaders is not classic itself, but it’s based on classics and it’s great.
  • Dragon Quest 1-6 all have good ports, but they are portrait, which turns some people off. Still great ports though.
  • Final Fantasy 1-9 and Tactics all have good ports
axby OP ,

Awesome, thanks! I played Sonic when I was younger, but somehow I never tried any of the others you mentioned. I’ve been meaning to try the “Final Fantasy” series forever and it never occurred to me that it would work well on a phone.

dos.zone/mobile/ has quite a lot of classic dos games updated with mobile controls. Strategy games in particular work well on a phone.

axby OP ,

This is awesome! “The Incredible Machine” seems like it’d work great too. It was a bit awkward to control in the browser (having to bring up the keyboard a few times), but I’ll have to try their app later.

Tyrian ruined all other shunps for me. Fucking love this game.

I have a free version from GoG on pc. There’s also a free android port on the play store but… Meh.

Love Tyrian, especially the soundtrack. Did not know there was an Android version. Does it honestly play well?

I vaguely remember playing UrQuan Masters on Android and remember it being quite cumbersome. With a proper port, that would be amazing!

axby OP ,

You can either use on-screen touch controls, or you can press anywhere on the screen and have the ship move to that location (while constantly firing). The on-screen touch controls do not work very well for me, but the “follow my finger” method works pretty well. I think I made it through “hard” or maybe medium with it.

It’s not ideal, you have to stop moving to stop firing and let your generator catch up if your shields took a lot of damage. But it’s fun enough as a casual game if you have a few minutes to kill. Or maybe it’s just the nostalgia that makes me enjoy it.

And you trigger sidekicks or toggle weapon firing modes by pressing the info on the right side of the screen. I assume this was added for the mobile version, I didn’t think it was clickable in the original, though I doubt I ever tried it.

axby OP ,

And yeah Ur-Quan Masters didn’t play very well. I figured it would be better than nothing on a long flight, though. (But who am I kidding, I always have my laptop with me anyway)

I get the appeal, but Metal Music is really not my thing 😀

While not a straight ready-to-go port…exactly, I was really impressed by DeltaTouch and QuadTouch. It ports over a bunch of id software sourceports to Android making it possible to play not only Doom, Heretic, and Strife, but Quake and Hexen II - most with mod and controller support.

There was even some tanks/aircraft mini game, like Worms Armageddon? I think you had to unlock it, possibly with cheat codes.

at the title screen, type in “DESTRUCT”

tyrian.fandom.com/wiki/Cheats#Secret_Gameplay_Mod…

I had so much fun with that mini game I can’t even believe they just had it hidden in there. It honestly could’ve been sold as its own game

axby OP ,

Ahhh… memories are flooding back now. I remember the screen would get distorted and change into the mini game. Agreed, it was amazing and I also can’t believe it was hidden. I miss little gems like that in older video games.

Is Surface arm or x86?

Just asking for my personal curiosity, that why you don’t use immutable version of Fedora?

FarLine99 OP , (edited )

X86. Because I like tinkering with my system and kinda see no purpose in Immutability for me.

Hasn’t that project been around for quite a while already?

FarLine99 OP ,

yup :)

DecentFarts , to technology in Linux for Microsoft Surface devices. It is reality!

Neat! I just started using my surface pro 6 because my framework laptop is waiting on RMA parts. Truthfully, I’m surprised at how well surface pro 6 performs. Having a machine from the OS OEM makes a big difference.

neosloth , to technology in Linux for Microsoft Surface devices. It is reality!

Been using it with a SP9. Overall it’s been a great experience, but not perfect. Cameras don’t work, shutdown doesn’t work properly when connected to power and the rotation is funky. I knew what I signed up for though as it is a very new device.

Still much better than using windows

What other flags make use of just a single letter?
