Dual-use goods

Such goods are classified as dual-use, meaning they also have civilian purposes, allowing China to skirt international sanctions and claim that it conducts only legal trade with Russia

The “international sanctions” btw:

https://lemmy.antemeridiem.xyz/pictrs/image/367c576a-a533-468b-9bb7-25446c54be4d.png

You can’t just unilaterally decree someone can’t be traded dual use goods

njm1314 ,

Not sure if you understand the meaning of “unilateral”.

postmeridiem ,

It’s the informal group known as the International Community.

YeeHaw ,

Those are pretty international, y’know. What would your criteria be for calling sanctions international?

postmeridiem ,
@postmeridiem@lemmy.antemeridiem.xyz avatar

A large majority of the world engaging in sanctions and not the usual suspects regularly framed in the press as the “international community.” It’s framed that way to imply that the entire world is doing it besides a few “rogue states” like China, North Korea or Venezuela, as if they were handed down by the UN or the world is united in agreement with the western sanctions regime. What would be far more accurate than “international sanctions” would be “western sanctions.”

For a more immediate example of how framing effects perception, look at all the people in this thread upset about China giving Russia weapons. No weapons are listed, just drones, helicopters, and metals. Upon opening the article you’ll see the drones arrived before the war and are presumably consumer electronics, and there are six undefined types of helicopters. Some posters even mentioned attack helicopters, as if the Telegraph would not be screaming about attack helicopters and not helicopters if that was the case.

It’s a complete nothingburger and like all nothingburgers it plays with language to let you fill in the gaps using the context they have provided. Russia is being “armed” with some consumer drones, six personal helicopters, and metal, and the whole world is in uproar about it.

YeeHaw ,

But, this is about as international as sanctions get. These are among the largest sanctions in history, in fact. Under your definition, no such thing as international sanctions ever happened. And the word “international” doesn’t imply global, planetary or a majority.

postmeridiem ,
@postmeridiem@lemmy.antemeridiem.xyz avatar

But, this is about as international as sanctions get.

Not true, North Korea is sanctioned by everyone via the UNSC with more specific sanctions from other countries and bodies like the EU.

And the word “international” doesn’t imply global, planetary or a majority.

Right, when they say the international sanctions by the international community they’re definitely not trying to imply anything. I wonder in that case what they mean when they mention the rules based international order.

redtea ,

For those interested, the dual use loophole is how the yanks supplied Saddam when he fought Iran and used chemical weapons against the Kurds. A conbination of dual use and swaps through intermediaries. Nowadays the US didn’t give as much of a fuck and instead manufactures reasons for why it’s okay to ship direct.

postmeridiem ,
@postmeridiem@lemmy.antemeridiem.xyz avatar

Although there is quite a gap between saying metals are dual use, and playing coy about specific chemicals that are most useful as precursors for advanced chemical weapons being dual use

juicy ,

Dropping inflation?

Siegfried ,

Inflation is falling, but It hasn’t fall to prior milei times yet. The situations is strange, but in general, we are waiting (or hoping, idk anymore) that it will continue going down. Strange thing to see, bank investment rates (idk the correct term in english) are going down and are lower for longer investment periods. Some prices have skyrocketed for the working class* (gas, electricity) and other are either in the same place as 3 months ago or plummeting (food, general goods, misc.).

Most of the fuzz heard on the news are policitally guided, which is sad cause this truly means that at the end we just dont care about anything anymore.

*dont even think that the working class is the lower class here, if a real crisis really hits that lower piece of the cake, we are all done, with the lunatic of milei and the freaking nazicommunists of the kirchners included.

juicy ,

I can’t imagine having inflation approaching 300%. We peaked at 9% two years ago and we’re still coping with the effects. I believe “interest rate” is the term you were looking for.

Siegfried ,

With 10% annually, it just affects your long term plans. Both prices and sallaries are kind of adjusted in the way, but you still manage to think about making a small vacation or something. Here most people is not “financially formed” and would “invest” in things that just hold their value. Think of buying gold per Kg with any remaining dollars you have.

With 10% monthly you are pretty much fried cause you truly dont know what is going to happen in the next month. Prices kind of lose meaning and you start to be more attentive on basic needs. The milk is 2k AR$. Is it much? Idk, but I need it, so i buy it.

I never experienced 10% daily (my parents did), but i feel that it is still somehow better. With that rate the economy just crashes, debts are pardon, schools make exceptions, healthcare just works. Its a terrible mess, but it has an end… or so they say.

juicy ,

Is it common for wages and contracts get pinned to inflation rates, so, e.g., union workers get automatic raises each paycheck to keep pace?

Siegfried , (edited )

Its common between “legal workers”. I, for instance usually get a rise per year, but if inflation rate surpases certain level, the rise is either renegotiated or just adjusted by inflation. It helps but it always falls behind inflation. 2 years ago i was earning like 200k AR$ monthly (roughly 600 US$ in black market currency), now im doing 850k AR$ (roughly 850 US$ BM, it was 600US$ pre milei) + 115k AR$ with a second job.

Im not unionized.

A big chunk of Argentina’s workers are non legal ones (usually the worker gets either a bigger pay or gets to keep universal income for non-employment and the employer avoids some taxes). I dont know what they do on those cases.

Edit: inb4, unions are great. People should be unionized. Im against unions in Argentina though, most of them have become a mafia in every sense of the word.

Can I ask…. How many shrooms do you have to take for it to go 48 hours like that?

    RedAggroBest ,

I’m almost betting on mixing drugs, the shrooms were just the thing that seemed the least illegal.

    remotelove , (edited )

It depends on the person, but trips like that may take a fuck ton, multiple times. I have heard of multi-day trips before that were caused because of doses higher than 15-20g. Napkin math puts that in the 150mg-200mg range of actual psilocybin. Regardless, it would be processed out of the body in about 24hrs. I am personally skeptical of multi-day trips, but they probably do happen.

There are plenty of caveats, so give me time to explain.

The effects on the brain after a trip can go into the multi-day range. For my trips I take between 3-3.5g depending on how I feel. I’ll peak about an hour after and trip fairly hard for 3-5 hours. (It’s also to be noted that the shrooms I grow are generally on the mid-high end of potency.) The afterglow, or come-down, takes another 4 hours or so and I’ll still see a literal glow around things or mild visuals. This is where my super-social personality comes out, and I love that part. If the night is going to be long, I’ll probably end up eating in in upwards of 10g more through the evening just to maintain very long come-down. Peaking again is possible, but it’s unlikely.

For a couple of days after, I still feel something. It’s more of a mental clarity or an alternate perspective on things. It’s hard to describe.

Edit: It’s speculated to act similar to a SSRI antidepressant in that regard. It reduces serotonin uptake for those receptors and increases serotonin availability in other parts of the brain.

What is happening, and from what I understand, is that psilocybin is an extreme 5-HT2A agonist. It saturates those receptors and tends to stick around for a bit when it does. This results in rapid tolerance to psilocybin since there won’t be any receptors left for it to “agonize”. It can take a week or more of abstinence to get the same level of trip with a similar dose.

You can game your body for a little bit, but you have to double-down on the dose. If you tripped yesterday off of 5g, you would need to eat 10g today and 20g the next and so on. For a 48hr trip, assuming his reaction is “normal” (if there is such a thing) he would of had to double down every 4-6 hours or so. Either way, it’s a lot of shrooms to eat and your stomach will absolutely punish you for it.

There is a little science behind this, but the experience and dosages are extremely variable from person to person.

I am not a doctor or a scientist. I read a fuck-ton on this subject from real studies from reputable universities. Search YouTube for some of the more recent lectures coming out of U.C. Davis if you don’t like to read. Still, that doesn’t make me an expert and I only truly know my own tolerance and experiences.

You will inevitably stumble across Paul Stamets as well. He literally wrote most of the first books about psilocybin and mushroom cultivation. While he is a knowledgeable and almost inspirational person, he does lean heavily into subjective experience. That’s fair, but it is what it is and he does mention it himself. And he owns a medical mushroom company. However, I respect that he doesn’t hide his own bias.

This subject is extremely understudied at the moment.

    FuglyDuck ,
    @FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

    Thank you for that!

One more quick one, that “clarity” for a few days after, is that basically what people are looking for when they talk about microdosing?

    remotelove , (edited )

Yep. It can take a bit to find a dose that low enough to not get a full-on buzz while still getting the positive effects from it.

The biggest problem is that psilocybin content per shroom, strain and specific grow is wildly variable. It’s better to get a larger batch from the same harvest of the same strain, grind it to an extremely fine powder and then find a good dose. More experimentation is required for the next batch you get. (Powdering shrooms normalizes the amount of active compounds per dose.)

I have only dabbled in microdoses. The main reason is that my trips are always borderline “heroic doses” at around 50mg of psilocybin, with the how strong my shrooms tend to be. Heroic doses get their name for a reason. Synesthesia (full sensory confusion) and near collapse of normal visual processing starts to happen at that level. Needless to say, it takes a bit for my brain to fully process those experiences.

Disclaimer: Even though I have a bit of practice, I have had an occasional rough experience at my dosage levels. Managing emotions in that state can be quite a challenge. All in all, no experience has been truly bad for me. Rough, but never bad.

On a scale of 1 to 7, a microdoses should be in sub-0.5 range, if even that. (Josie Kins and her sister(?) have done an extremely good job of classifying the psychedelic experience as “levels”: youtu.be/UQRfTD6AXPs?si=sfJc3pSYIvYBOVG6)

Why is it conservatives are so much more frequently corrupt than liberals? There’s nothing about conservativism itself that would lend itself to this sort of bullshit, so how is that corruption spreads so much more in conservative circles?

    xkforce ,

Youre wondering why a group of people that paint government officials as corrupt might be more likely to be corrupt themselves? Theyre projecting.

    TimeNaan ,

Because it’s an ideology of egoism and selfishness, corruption finds fertile ground in these kinds of attitudes.

    floofloof ,

There’s nothing about conservativism itself that would lend itself to this sort of bullshit

There’s the fact that the entire ideology places selfishness as its highest value. I’d say that’s conducive to corruption and embezzlement.

    Tedesche ,

Then you have a very warped understanding of conservatism. I’m not a conservative myself, but I understand it’s values system. What you likely mistake for selfishness is actually a preference for individual liberty to take precedence over the interests of the majority. That’s not to say the greater good doesn’t matter; it just means conservatives feel everyone being free to do what they please serves the greater good better than majorities dictating what individuals should do. Like liberalism, conservatism has its flaws, but it is not inherently selfish or evil.

However, I should also note that I don’t think modern conservatives follow conservatism very closely these days. Trump and others have succeeded in perverting that value system into something something much more authoritarian than conservatism is at its core.
