Cigarette girls still exist, in Vegas at least.

Do they sell individual cigarettes or something?

I bet toad doctors were so chill.

Stalinwolf ,
@Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s the one that jumped out at me almost religiously. I feel like I lost out on something deeply fulfilling and tailored to my very soul.

Edit: It doesn’t mention living in a toadstool or a hermit hut covered in them as I had imagined, but I’m sure it’s perfectly legal to do that while still upholding your oaths and croaks.

I wonder how much schooling someone would need for this? What’s the salary and benefits like? I think I could do this.

If I had a time machine I would go and be a toad doctor and live in a little cottage in the woods and have a ton of wacky ingredients and stuff everywhere.

It’s similar to cunning folk, another kind of folk magician.

lasted three weeks until he was sacked after being discovered in a local pub

Sounds like there was no “time off”.

Schadrach ,

It breaks immersion if the guy you hire as “weird hobo that dwells in your garden” to show off to your upper class friends is seen outside that context.

I don’t know about the others, but runemaster sounds fascinating.

BluesF ,

You could still make runes as a hobby I guess. Sell em on Etsy and call yourself a modern Runemaster

My dad worked on an assembly line making vacuum tubes. After that he was a calculator repairman for most of his life.

Calculator Repairman.

An entire life that is obsolete now. Because we no longer do much of the drudgery of assembly lines; we have machines that do it. Calculators (and other things) that used to require an entire infrastructure to keep running are now cheap and disposable.

Why can’t a high school graduate raise a family of four and buy a house? Because this isn’t that world. We’ve eliminated a lot of the jobs the middle class used to do.

Not on purpose, just because.

some_guy ,

But also on purpose.

Dont forget “computer”

AVincentInSpace ,

Hidden Figures should be required reading (required viewing?) for anyone in STEM

perishthethought ,

Assuming we’re taking about the Charles Babbage era computers, yes.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They were not. They were talking about a much more important part of history.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Figures_(book)

Babbage had some interesting ideas and produced one machine that was not especially useful. He didn’t even really understand the idea of software. That was Ada Lovelace.

NASA’s “computers” got us to the moon. They literally calculated Apollo 11’s trajectory. They saved the men on Apollo 13 by plotting their directory back home. All with paper and their superior knowledge of mathematics.

They were women and they were black, which is why they were mostly forgotten for many years and why you probably don’t know about them yourself.

I still can’t get over the story about how women should “get on their knees” for trump

wonderfulvoltaire ,
@wonderfulvoltaire@lemmy.world avatar

The whole purpose of the chapter is about personal responsibility to protect your body like a temple, protect yourself against adultery because it will harm your relationships not just with God. Nothing about it said to tell people how to live their lives and it’s depressing that’s what the mainstream right thinks is okay.
