Akasazh , to world in Turkey says it killed 13 Kurdish militants in northern Iraq
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Turkey is an awkward mirror to Israel. They both have an an unrecognized ethnostate with a populace that is locked in perpetual guerilla war with each other.

Both are framed differently, though. The Kurds often get framed slightly more positive, as they were helping the western forces defeat Isis. And the Turks donā€™t have the same grip on the International media that Israel have.

Itā€™s however a painful equivalent as if we choose to not call out Israel, we canā€™t call out Turkey either.

CaptainBasculin ,

Israel and Palestine are legitimate nations. Turkey is fighting PKK, a terrorist organization without any legitimate nation behind; also has a history of killing civilians, kidnapping children and burning schools. Unlike Israel, Turkey does not target areas with high likelihood of civilian casualties.

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Palestine is not recognized globally. For instance IsraĆ«l doesnā€™t recognize it, which is part of the problem.

Turkey, like Israel, has labeled the PKK as terrorist organisation, however they say they are freedom fighters. This has been the case for Hamas and Hezbollah too, just like the IRA and ETA.

Not saying that terrorism is legitimized, but like the Israelites Turkey is involved in violent suppression of Kurds. Itā€™s exactly the same situation, and Turkey can play at it as thereā€™s no western moral high ground as Israel is allowed to do the same thing.

The Western Coalition was most welcoming towards the help of PKK fighting against Isis and the remnants of Saddamā€™s baathists, however.

CaptainBasculin ,

Comparing Turkey, a nation that aims to defend its citizens from terrorism related attacks to Israel; a nation that kills civilians and bombs hospitals just to possibly kill some targets is the worst comparison Iā€™ve ever seen.

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

What do you feel about the comparison between Kurds and Palestinians? Both minorites that are desperate enough to resort to terrorist attacks and reprisals by a more powerful state that is supported by a global power.

CaptainBasculin ,

Palestinians have heavily restricted rights inside Israel territory; unlike Kurds in Turkey who are considered Turkish citizens and have no restrictions in their citizenship rights

Hamas has been accepting of a peaceful solution; PKK isnā€™t. Turkey has tried the peaceful option with no success; because it turned out PKK was using the peace negotiation time to trap more buildings with bombs and arm themselves up.

Main reason behind PKKā€™s creation was unfair treatment towards prisoners within the areas with high Kurdish population; unlike the whole Palestine-Israel conflict where Israelā€™s idea started from the thought of ethnic cleansing of their area.

I canā€™t find any reason why these two would be comparable whatsoever.

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Thanks for your perspective. I still think that there more to it than meets the eye. Both situations are directly attributable to the dissolution of the ottoman empire, where the region was kind of randomly subdivided, without regard towards the populace. Like the Armenians the Kurds feel the indifference of the Turks towards their ethnicity.

Also the British administration of Palestine, culminating in the Balfour declaration eventually caused the plight of the Palestinians.

I think weā€™re not going to agree in the end, but thanks for your perspective.

Billy OP , (edited )

Iā€™ll focus only on a few big points.
Turkey also bombs the SDF, which isnā€™t considered a terrorist group by anyone (other than Turkey and Qatar maybe).

Even the PKK, which is the worst out of the Kurdish groups, only calls for an autonomous area in Turkey, and not for the annihalation of Turkey or for the death of all Turks.

The Kurds were oppressed and persecuted for a very long time under Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. Their neighbours all want them gone or dead (although some would be fine ā€œjustā€ with forced assimilation), similarily to how they view / have viewed Israel and Jews.

Kurds barely get any support, even from the USA.
Hamas has the support of many states and groups all over the region.

Iā€™d say these are quite different situations.

ā€œWhen I talk to young people, especially Gen Z, I tell them to set a budget and stick with it,ā€ said Holly Oā€™Neill, Bank of Americaā€™s president of retail banking.

What an unfathomably stupid comment to include in this article. As if Gen Z people have never heard of the concept of ā€œsticking to a budgetā€.

To media-savvy people: why would they include something so stupid and obvious in this article?

Meron35 ,

I read this as a shady dig towards the Bank of America to show how out of touch they are.

Meltrax ,

Because this article isnā€™t written for Gen Z readers. Itā€™s written for Boomers, the largest consumer bracket of random bullshit web articles like this, and theyā€™ll read that line and think ā€œyeah, dumb kids, they should just learn to budget, thatā€™s what I had to doā€ and theyā€™ll feel slightly superior and slightly satisfied and come back and click on the next article tomorrow, driving ad revenue because theyā€™re too dumb to use ad blockers, and thatā€™s literally the whole point of all of this.

HubertManne ,

also sticking to a budget is something you do when you have excess cash. When I was barely paying bills it was basically about saving every cent and praying but then the stress you sometimes break down and have something to eat out or such and then when you can't have your own place its easy to have a bit of money for fun but not nearly enough to pay rent.

Korkki , to worldnews in Kyiv hails dialogue with Beijing, hints at potential Zelenskiy-Xi meeting

Ukraine will not negotiate peace, ever. Everybody should understand this. These talks are nothing but theater. When Ukraine talks about peace it does speak about compromise, dialogue or even talks, it means that Ukrainian representatives get to climb to yet another podium to reiterate to the world that Ukraine getting itā€™s own maximalist goals achieved and Russia essentially totally capitulating, paying reparations and of course regime change in Kremlin is a must. They say that this IS peace and only way towards peace and then of course ask more money and weapons. Too bad this strategy pulled straight from La La Land, and no factor on or off the battlefield supports this Ukraine getting itā€™s lands back is ever happening. What happens when Ukrainian state is agreement incapable? I guess it means that Kiev makes the removal of Ukrainian state a precondition for peace. What they are trying with this is getting Chinese strung in to the narrative, somehow. They already got the Chinese pissed with their previous comments like a week back when they spat on all proposals that China came up with, because for Kiev being outwardly unreasonable, defiant and putting up a brave face for PR is more important than reality on the ground or lives.

MrVilliam ,

Imagine a neighboring country invaded your country, stole your land, killed your people indiscriminately, raped your women, tortured your defending soldiers, and spread propaganda that you all deserved this and would continue to receive this until you ceded all lands and resources to them. Now, what does fair peace look like in this scenario? Kinda sounds like the invaders leaving, that country paying for damages, and the leader being out of power so they donā€™t just try again would be the bare minimum you would accept.

You either donā€™t understand whatā€™s happening or youā€™re intentionally furthering a narrative that supports eradicating millions of people while cosplaying as ā€œthe good guysā€ here. The former is sad, the latter is chilling, and both are absolutely unacceptable from any human being to continue on with after Iā€™ve pointed this out to you. So will you educate yourself on the matter, reject the call to spread Russian propaganda, or continue to be a despicable fucking monster? Iā€™d like to know so I can see whether I need to block you and report you to mods or not. Or maybe this is your chance to prove that youā€™d like to better yourself.

When you can answer this question regarding what white Amerika deserves, honestly, and without exceptionalist bias, thatā€™ll be the ONLY time youā€™re EVER allowed to opine on the subject of what ā€œinvadersā€ deserve, who the actual colonizers are, or how to solve the problem. Lulaā€™s always been pretty good with calling out other peopleā€™s bullshit around Latin America, it isnā€™t particularly surprising that heā€™d do that (and the same applies to Biden). Shame that he doesnā€™t have the courage to do the same with Russia though, even if thatā€™s more because Russia has held Brazilā€™s agricultural market by the balls for a while now.
