autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Himalayan lake flooding in India kills 18, nearly 100 missing

This is the best summary I could come up with:

NEW DELHI, Oct 5 (Reuters) - At least 14 people were killed and 102, including 22 army personnel, were missing in northeast India on Thursday after heavy rain caused a glacial lake to burst its banks, triggering flash floods down a mountain valley, officials said.

“The search operations are being undertaken under conditions of incessant rains, fast-flowing water in Teesta river, roads and bridges washed away at many places,” a defence spokesperson said on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter.

A cloudburst dropped a huge amount of rain over a short period on the Lhonak glacial lake on Wednesday, triggered flash floods down the Teesta valley, about 150 km (93 miles) north of Gangtok, capital of Sikkim state, near the border with China.

Video footage from the ANI news agency, showed flood waters surging into built-up areas where several houses collapsed, army bases and other facilities were damaged and vehicles submerged.

Other mountainous areas of India, as well as parts of neighbouring Pakistan and Nepal have been hit by torrential rains, flooding and landslides in recent months, killing scores of people.

Last year, Pakistan blamed climate change for unprecedented floods caused by historic monsoon rains that washed away roads, crops, infrastructure and bridges, and killed at least 1,000 people.

It’s almost like the virus mutated

Crazy right?

austinfloyd ,

But where could it find a host to mutate in is everyone was vaccinated?!

rainerloeten ,
@rainerloeten@lemmy.world avatar

You don’t seem to understand the difference between mRNA vaccines and an immune escape mutation of a virus evading the immune systems response of the hosts.

Also part of why those beneficial mutations occurred is that a large (enough) portion of people weren’t vaccinated. The “potential” hosts, that required adaptation because they’ve seen how the virus looks like through vaccines, create an evolutionary pressure.

Even though this is about bacteria, not viruses and happens inside a petri dish, not in a natural environment, it quite illustratively shows how mutations work. Note, that even though the antibiotics are completely ineffective against the bacteria at the end, this does NOT mean, that it’s useless to begin with. It’s very effective, in fact so much that only small doses suffice to keep the bacteria away. But they mutate randomly yet with a selective (evolutionary) pressure. Maybe you’re too much of a “skeptic” to change your mind. But if you’re truly skeptic, try to be skeptic about your currently held believes too. The video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=plVk4NVIUh8

protovack ,

ah the classic “if only a few more people got vaccinated early on, we could have prevented the entire thing”…lol. no.

zenitsu ,

Might want to read on the basics of how vaccines work and maybe the flu vaccines as an example, before saying dumb shit like this.

protovack ,

yea, the original one indeed does not work anymore, they don’t even give it anymore. and the “new” one is based on a strain that is now over a year old. you think that one is going to “work” even better? lol.

zenitsu ,

They all work against the strain they’re intended for, just like the flu shots. What don’t you understand?

protovack ,

thats only true if the pace of vaccine development is fast enough to catch up. there is no evidence that we are fast enough yet. and plenty of evidence that we aren’t.

zenitsu ,

That’s the dumbest shit I’ve read in a while. What constitutes “fast enough”? Flu shots are given out before flu season and the covid vaccines were dispatched in record time for a novel virus, a monumental achievement. The evidence is that the vaccine saved millions of lives. You’re just an idiot arguing in bad faith, who’s taking embarrassingly long to realise he was incorrect.

autotldr Bot , to technology in UK regulator to push for probe into Amazon, Microsoft cloud dominance

This is the best summary I could come up with:

LONDON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - British media regulator Ofcom will this week push for an antitrust investigation into Amazon (AMZN.O) and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) dominance of the UK’s cloud computing market, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The recommendation, first issued by Ofcom in April, will remain in the body’s final report on the matter, set to be published on Thursday, one of the sources said.

Ofcom warned the current state of Britain’s cloud computing market made it difficult for some existing customers to bargain for a good deal with their provider.

Technical restrictions and discounts encouraging customers to keep using a single provider for all their needs, even when better alternatives were available, could be considered anti-competitive, the body said in a report earlier this year.

“It would be a particularly unfortunate outcome if UK businesses and public sector customers faced less vibrant and competitive cloud solutions on a global stage than those available to their rivals in the EU, the U.S. and China," it said.

A spokesperson for Ofcom said: “We will be announcing our decision whether or not to refer the market to the CMA by the statutory deadline, which is Thursday 5 October.”

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Eni boosts Indonesia exposure with big gas discovery

This is the best summary I could come up with:

MILAN, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Italian energy group Eni announced on Monday a big gas discovery in Indonesia, opening the door to a strengthening of its position in the Asian country, where it has been present since 2001 with a portfolio of exploration and production assets.

The group said the discovery was from the Geng North-1 exploration well drilled in the North Ganal PSC, about 85 kilometres (53 miles) off the coast of East Kalimantan.

Indonesia, and South-East Asia in general, play a role in this strategy, Eni said, adding its current production in the country was 80,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The chairman of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas regulator, SKK Migas, said in a statement that the country hoped Eni’s discovery would attract other international oil companies and added the regulator was coordinating with the group so the discovery could be monetised immediately.

The discovery opens the door to the creation of a new production hub to be tied to the Bontang LNG facilities on the coast of East Kalimantan, Eni said.

It is estimated that, in addition to Geng North, more than 5 tcf of gas in place are present in undeveloped discoveries within the area of interest, the Italian group said.

autotldr Bot , to world in Saudi Arabia forecasts slower growth, budget deficit this year

This is the best summary I could come up with:

CAIRO, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has lowered its growth forecast and expects to post a budget deficit this year rather than an earlier projected surplus, a preliminary budget statement showed on Saturday.

The largest Arab economy expects real gross domestic product to grow by 0.03% this year, the document released by the ministry of finance showed, compared with a previous forecast for growth of 3.1%.

Total revenue is now expected to be 1.180 trillion riyals ($314.64 billion) and government spending is forecast to be 1.262 trillion riyals.

Oil prices remain below last year’s average of $100 a barrel.

It said “limited budget deficits” would continue in the medium term due to expansionary spending policies and conservative revenue estimates.

Saudi Arabia’s economy grew 8.7% last year on the back of high oil prices, allowing it to record its first budget surplus in almost a decade

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The UAW is expected to continue work stoppages currently under way until a new contract is ratified, a source familiar with the situation said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The strike is now entering its third week as the autoworkers push for higher wages and benefits and the elimination of a tiered standard that pays newer workers far less.

The union escalated the initial strike on Sept. 22, when workers walked off the job at General Motors and Stellantis distribution facilities in 20 states nationwide.

The effect of these walkouts has been relatively limited compared to the financial hit from halting assembly lines that build Ford F-series, Chevy Silverados and Ram trucks.

The union expanded its strikes against GM and Stellantis, but kept its Ford walkout limited to a single plant due to progress in those talks.

Fain has stuck with a demand for 40% pay hikes over a four-year contract, a position supported by President Joe Biden during a visit to Detroit on Tuesday.
