WatDabney , to news in Monthly US consumer prices post first drop in four years as inflation subsides

This is like compulsive gambler logic - 48 losses in a row followed by 1 win - “Woohoo! I’m on a winning streak now!”

Carrolade ,

That’s kind of just how trends work. Economics indicators tend to lag, as it takes time for supply chains to adjust to conditions and changes.

Deflation is actually not a desirable thing anyway, so this isn’t actually necessarily a win. But I’ll take it anyway.

fukhueson OP , (edited )

True, though this is considered feeding into disinflation in the article, so it may not lead to ill effects of deflation.

U.S. consumer prices fell for the first time in four years in June amid cheaper gasoline and moderating rents, firmly putting disinflation back on track and drawing the Federal Reserve another step closer to cutting interest rates in September.

WatDabney ,

One month is not a “trend.”

Carrolade ,

No, but the few years of inflation was. Now that trend is changing.

Ensign_Crab ,

Or it’s noise.

NegativeInf ,

It represents a break in the previous trend.

TransplantedSconie , to news in Monthly US consumer prices post first drop in four years as inflation subsides

Nice. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a trend and it keeps going in the right direction.

Thorny_Insight , to news in Monthly US consumer prices post first drop in four years as inflation subsides

Just a reminder that inflation slowing down doesn’t automatically mean the prices will drop too. It only means the prices stop increasing. You’d need deflation to make the prices come down and that would be even worse for the economy.

I didn’t realize burying the lede was something you could do in a headline, but here’s an example of it.

NoneOfUrBusiness , to world in Palestinian president blames Hamas for continuing war in Gaza

Uh... I hate how the headline makes it sound like Mahmoud Abbas is anyone important. I mean he should be, but he isn't.

President, whose term ended years ago, wants the resistance to surrender to the occupation he collaborates with.

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

They are terrorists not a resistance. Resistance movements care about the people they are fighting for. Hamas does not care about Gaza.

That’s why Gazans are starting to turn on them.

ashar ,
@ashar@infosec.pub avatar

Anyone who fights an occupation is resistance. This is fairly obvious.

Oh yes the israeli puppet that refuses to hold elections because Hamas would literally win them.

The one that arrests Palestinian resistance fighters and delivers them to Israel, but not IDF terrorists disguising as medics to assault people in hospitals.

Mrkawfee , to world in At least 17 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza overnight, officials say

Another day another massacre by Israel. No coverage let alone outrage by legacy media. A conspiracy of silence and obfuscation by Zionist bought politicians.

Japan builds markets to sell stolen Australian gas.

filoria OP , to worldnews in China's Q2 GDP grows 4.7% y/y, below forecast

4.7% YoY Q2

5.3% YoY Q1

0.7% QoQ Q2

1.5% QoQ Q1

Retail sales were the contributor (2.0% YoY growth, vs. 3.3% expected)

Retail growth is being sandbagged by a few key factors:

  1. Luxury goods demand being beaten to the absolute ground. Eviscerated.
  2. Foreign brands have tanked in China - Apple, foreign cars, etc. and have been replaced by (cheaper) domestic alternatives like Huawei, BYD, etc.
  3. New trade restrictions with the US and Europe have limited Chinese consumption patterns. For example, the RTX 4090 is blocked from being exported to China.
