Kinda odd that a US state official is talking about this in language implying it’s the US’s war? Removes the whole facade that this isn’t US+Ukraine vs Russia that everyone’s pretending isn’t happening.

MasterObee , to worldnews in Dead EV batteries turn to gold with US incentives

Seems reasonable for the most part -

“The IRA includes a clause that automatically qualifies EV battery materials recycled in the U.S. as American-made for subsidies, regardless of their origin. That is important because it qualifies automakers using U.S.-recycled battery materials for EV production incentives.”

But my question is why even make the qualifier ‘US made’ if foreign made batteries qualify? Don’t lie, just say they’re battery recycling regardless of origin.

partial_accumen ,

But my question is why even make the qualifier ‘US made’ if foreign made batteries qualify? Don’t lie, just say they’re battery recycling regardless of origin.

The for the tax credit rule is:

  • New batteries manufactured in the USA
  • New batteries manufactured in the USA or outside the USA, but recycled in the USA

The reason “Batteries manufactured outside of the USA” doesn’t count is because it does nothing to incentives battery manufacturing or recycling in the USA.

I think your complaint is really with the wording the author of the article chose. Here’s straight from the US Treasury department on the Inflation Reduction Act:

“To meet the critical mineral requirement and be eligible for a $3,750 credit, the applicable percentage of the value of the critical minerals contained in the battery must be extracted or processed in the United States or a country with which the United States has a free trade agreement, or be recycled in North America—as mandated by the Inflation Reduction Act.”

No ambiguity in that wording.

You only brought up nazis being in Ukraine. Yet, you became offended when I showed you that there are also nazis in Russia. Sounds like you’re doing a disservice to the living survivors of the massacres.

The next time you pretend not to support Russia’s massacre of the Ukrainians, spout their braindead propaganda about nazis only being in one country, and have a name like “Lenins2ndcat” maybe you should try a little harder to pretend that you’re being objective.

That is not what the quote says at all, it simply discusses the origin of the phrase, not about whether Ukrainians are nazis. Why is reading comprehension so hard? Support whatever you want but you should rethink normalising fascist slogans out of ignorance.

As for my name, I’ve made it quite clear russia are not communists and that I do not support them at all many times. Get a grip.

Thankfully the Geneva Convention doesn’t agree with your faulty logic. Your personal value judgements on the quality of journalism being produced has absolutely zero bearing on whether killing a journalist is acceptable.

    A good write-up here.

Just to check if you’re applying your “logic” evenly or just cherry-picking where and how you apply it: should targeting of Russian medics be allowed, since they’re only saving the lives of Russian soldiers? If not, how is targeting a journalist (for Russia) different than targeting a medic (for Russia)?

And remember: the Geneva Convention disagrees with you. Maybe that should be motivation to check if what you’re saying is actually reasonable or not.

Why did I expect anything different?

Instead of reading the points made and perhaps agreeing or disagreeing, you get to shortcut the whole thing by just saying “I didn’t read it, and yet I disagree!”. Why even pretend to participate?

You’ll notice I actually wrote a comment and made points of my own, and linked to a secondary comment going into more detail. You didn’t bother to address either. Must be nice to be proud of being ignorant.

“When the facts are against me, shut the whole thing down with namecalling and dismissiveness!”. Again, I guess I really shouldn’t expect any different. Only one side is even trying to have a conversation; the other is just playing a game of yelling loudly with no substance and shutting down anyone with contrary views.

    You’re a blight on society.

    DarkThoughts ,

I don't have to read into it because it is bs anyway. Russia has no press, it has propagandists. The Geneva convention is also something Russia did not sign into and it isn't like Ukraine targeted him specifically because he's a "reporter", he simply went to a dangerous place and paid the price for it. And why is it dangerous? Because his country illegally invaded this place. This is nothing but fake outcry to make excuses for a country that literally directly targets actual frontline reporters, and I'm talking with having them in their sights, identifying them and still pulling the trigger. Just like civilians and other actual literal war crimes. So yes, I don't care about your tankie points, at all, because you're hypocritical pieces of shit that downplay literal historical atrocities. So excuse me when I cannot find the nerve to give you the benefit of the doubt anymore.

    DarkThoughts ,

Stop bullshitting. I'm not going to provide links to some neonazi sources about immigration and expect you to read that either. You're a tankie and rashist and that's pretty evident by your various comments on those topics. That makes you an extremist and clearly irrelevant to be taken into consideration in such discussions.

yogthos , to worldnews in Blinken says Ukraine has taken back 50% of territory that Russia seized
    @yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

This is a perfect example of naked propaganda. Blinken distracts from the fact that the main offensive that’s been talked up for like half a year now failed to make any progress in over two months by talking about the gains Ukraine managed to make last year against territory Russia didn’t actually contest at the time.

The real question everybody should be asking is what happens once this offensive burns itself out. NATO basically sent all it could for this offensive, and turns out it was already known before the offensive started that this would not be enough wsj.com/…/ukraines-lack-of-weaponry-and-training-…

New equipment has to be produced now, and given the woeful state of western industry it’s going to take months and years to do that. Here’s what the latest DoD statement had to say:

Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced a new security assistance package to support Ukraine’s battlefield needs and underscore unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine. This package, which includes critical air defense capabilities and munitions, will be provided as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).

This USAI package highlights the continued U.S. commitment to meeting Ukraine’s pressing requirements by committing critical near-term capabilities while also building the enduring capacity of Ukraine’s Armed Forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression over the mid and long term.

Unlike Presidential Drawdown authority, which DoD has continued to utilize to deliver equipment to Ukraine from DoD stocks at a historic pace, USAI is an authority under which the United States procures capabilities from industry or partners to then send to Ukraine. This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine.

NYT is now reporting that the Ukrainian army is becoming exhausted and it’s already suffering shortages web.archive.org/…/weary-soldiersunreliable-muniti…

So, what exactly do people think is going to happen when the Russian army starts an offensive of their own against an exhausted and depleted Ukrainian army?

    yata ,

So, what exactly do people think is going to happen when the Russian army starts an offensive of their own against an exhausted and depleted Ukrainian army?

The same thing that happened during the last Russian offensive, absolutely nothing because the Russian army is even more exhausted and depleted than the Ukrainians, and we seem to be in a period of military history again where the defense is much stronger than the offense (at least in a scenario with no clear air superiority).

“Map projections” lmao. The mercator map makes area look bigger the further north it is. So if anything, it would oversize the area that Ukraine has retaken in the north while undersizing the area that Russia has taken in the south. But within a small country, distortion from map projection will be negligible.

I think you’re wrong actually. The map in question does not seem to use the ISW data.

This is the point you are referring to from ISW: understandingwar.org/…/russian-offensive-campaign…

(Aside, According to this arcticle, your 54% is not an actual hard percentage, but an estimate. From their own words, they measure the area of the map using Mercator projection, and state using a different projection would give you a different estimate. They don’t correct for projection error in their measurement, which as I pointed out earlier, biases the figure towards overestimating the recaptured territory in the north, and underestimating the area still under Russia’s control in the south. )

But compare LiveUA map to the timelapse here. Their data shows large areas under Russian control that are not shown as recaptured on the LiveUA map. I should not have said “looks like” when it is clear from the map that the red area, minus Crimea and pre-2022 DPR and LPR, is still much larger than the blue area.

Saying 50% has been recaptured is contingent upon how much territory Russia actually controlled in the Kharkiv and Kiev areas during the first few weeks of the war. This figure is insanely variable based on who you ask. In those first few weeks, Russian propagandists would greatly overstate how much territory in the north had been captured. In reality, Russia went into the northern area with a very small force and captured a few highways. If you paint with a very broad brush, all of the surrounding area came under Russian control, even if Russian troops never had a presence there. But that does not correspond to the strict reality.
