_Z1useri , to technology in Elon Musk says Twitter's cash flow still negative as ad revenue drops 50%

From a purely technical perspective I’m a bit confused how this clown-car has kept going for so long, after all the slash-and-burn restructuring that’s happened. Hopefully there’s going to be some engineers telling the story when Musk manages to fubar it after all.

Koffiato ,

As far as I know, it was in a worse state. What Elon did since he took over is basically reducing the running costs heavily among other things.

People tend to forget Twitter never made money so far.

_Z1useri ,

But that included not paying for servers, firing people and finding out later that they had irreplaceable knowledge, demanding constant crunch time from the poor sods that are left and randomly turning off “unnecessary” services.

I’d be really surprised if that made the overall state better.

Hoooooo boy… it’s gonna be HOT eh

NotSpez , to world in China logs 52.2 Celsius as extreme weather rewrites records

Maybe a stupid question, but is this measured in the sun or shade?

fearout ,
@fearout@kbin.social avatar

Temperature reports like this always use in-the-shade measurements. You can get much higher temps when measuring in direct sunlight, like easily 100C+, depending on the material of your measuring device.

NotSpez ,

Thanks. So the 60 degrees in Spain were also in-shade. That is truly messed up.

If politicians didn’t reassure us frequently there is nothing going on I’d really start to think we are in real trouble.

DFTBA_FTW ,

60deg in Spain was ground surface temp not air temp, air temp was like 40deg.

Sethayy ,

I love that last paragraph lmao, imma steal that

Nice. You have my blessing!

GiuseppeAndTheYeti , to news in Traffic stopped on Crimean Bridge, reports of blasts

If Ukraine is ever going to take Crimea back from Russia, the destruction of this bridge is critical. There are certainly going to be more and more headlines like this in the future. The next steps for Ukraine are to cut off resupply lines to Crimea in the north through Mariupol/Melitopol and to destroy the Kerch bridge in the south. After that they will be able to lay siege on the occupying forces garrisoned on the Crimean peninsula to whittle down their supplies prior to crossing at Perekop.

Good, China had shown it’s not trustworthy.

masquenox , to worldnews in Putin says Russia will use cluster bombs in Ukraine if it has to

Uuuuh… as far as I’m aware, Russia has already been using cluster munitions in Ukraine. They used cluster munitions in Chechnya and Syria as well - and lots of them.

The US used them extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan, too… but that’s okay, because those people don’t “look like us” (apparently).

It’s kind of weird that people are only now making a big fuss about them.

dedale ,
@dedale@kbin.social avatar

We were making a big fuss back then. We also made a big fuss about Gitmo.
Nobody cared.

Dreyns ,

That’s modern media to you, not about information more about making big noise for big money with nothing of matter behind.

lemmyshmemmy ,

“modern media” in the sense that the Kremlin has a lot of propaganda on social media.

novibe , to news in EU seeks to revive Latin America, Caribbean ties as it turns away from China, Russia

Lol good luck with Latin America. It’s pretty split between China and the US Empire/“the west”.

With the recent small wave of “left leaning” politicians winning in many places, many started to turn to China again.

And all in all China is a more attractive partner, because they usually pursue more equal deals compared to the IMF/“west”. Also they don’t call the global south a “jungle” while saying Europe is a garden lmao

But it doesn’t matter. In some years the US backed political parties will win again (after magically arresting another opponent, or killing them, couping them etc.) and turn to the EU and US again.

Ok, so it doesn’t mention wet bulb temperature anywhere, so I went to figure it out. The first thing I was surprised with is apparently most of online calculators don’t take in values higher than 50C.

I couldn’t find the exact data about humidity for that day, but it has been 35-40%+ at a minimum for most days in that region, sometimes even reaching 90%.

So, 52C at around 40% humidity is 37.5C in wet bulb temp. The point of survivability is around 35, and most humans should be able to withstand 37.5 for several hours, but it’s much worse for sick or elderly. 39 is often a death sentence even for healthy humans after just two hours — your body can no longer lose heat and you bake from the inside. That’s like having an unstoppable runaway fever. And with that humidity it’s reached at 54C.

We’re dangerously close to that.

IndiBrony ,
@IndiBrony@lemmy.world avatar

Just out of interest, what would be the wet bulb temperature at 90% humidity? I’m not familiar with that temperature scale.

fearout , (edited )
@fearout@kbin.social avatar

Wet bulb temperature is basically converting to 100% humidity equivalent, so as you get closer to 100%, WBT approaches measured temperature. We use this metric because our bodies cool mostly via evaporation, and no evaporation is possible at 100% — the air is already fully saturated. So in general, WBT means minimum possible temperature that can be reached by evaporative cooling. Once your body loses the ability to cool, it rushes to match surrounding wet bulb temperature (or even exceed it, since we produce about 100W of heat energy by simply existing).

So 52C at 90% is about 50C WBT. Survivable for mere minutes for some, and probably for about an hour or so for most humans. Definitely not survivable for a full day.

DarkThoughts , to worldnews in Putin says Russia will use cluster bombs in Ukraine if it has to

They literally used cluster bombs in Kharkiv last year. Fucking clowns.

    To put this into perspective, a humid 60°C are conditions where hyperthermia (getting too hot) can take effect within 10 minutes of exposure.

    We're 8°C from that point. We are within arms reach of creating conditions so hostile to human life that survivability for most people will be unimaginably low.
