FlyingSquid , to world in Indonesia raises smoking age limit, will curb cigarette advertising
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I remember seeing a documentary years ago showing that all of the stuff the West was trying to stop cigarette companies from doing in terms of marketing to kids they were doing with no restrictions in Indonesia. Seven-year-olds were shown smoking. So I’m glad they’re working on this issue.

original_reader , to world in Indonesia raises smoking age limit, will curb cigarette advertising

Cigarette companies. That’s a pest no one who wants a clean future would miss.

taanegl , to worldnews in Drillers emit far more methane than US estimates, aerial survey shows

Ha. “Estimates”.

Anyone under the delusion that the EPA hasn’t been hamstrung by lobbying and special interests? Trump wants to get rid of it, because it’s such a thorn in one’s side when you can’t just destroy entire environments at the behest shareholders.

Won’t somebody please think of the shareholders?!!

pop ,

The real “Ha” is that the west has everyone under the delusion that only China, Russia and India and others lie on their environmental statistics and they themselves are the stewards of fight against climate change. While keeping a low profile of doing the exact opposite.

theguardian.com/…/new-oil-gas-emission-data-us-uk

Your strawman proves their peopaganda works.

“Meh! It sucks but you just wait until the other guy does something worse”

What an attitude to have. But whatever makes you sleep at night.

taanegl ,

Strawman? Where TF do you see a strawman? Is it somewhere behind your whataboutism?

“There is corruption in other countries too you know”… yeah, thanks. We talk about them separately because it’s necessary to analyse each one individually.

But, as a matter of indulgence we can say that US regulations are much more lax than in the EU proper, which is tbf also culpable in petroleum, gas and yee olde capitalist exploitation, but it is still a far cry away from China, India and Russia, because those are highly authoritarian countries that are ruled by oligarchies that do not GIVE A FUUUCK about their citizens, even much more so than even the US.

In any case, wtf does all that have to do with the history of the EPA being made a limp dick by way of lobbying and intentionally ineffective policies? The point remains the same, the EPA has been weakened and it’s apparent all across the US - word to Flint, Michigan.

Time for a damn reform I say.

sheogorath , to world in Indonesia raises smoking age limit, will curb cigarette advertising

This won’t matter much. Most Indonesian males smoke since they’re ~15 and just raising the limits won’t work.

HK65 ,

Isn’t is better than not raising the limit though?

sheogorath ,

What’s better is to do more tangible effort to curb underage smoking and limit public places where you can smoke. In Indonesia basically you can smoke anywhere and the areas specified is the ones where you cannot smoke.

Most places doesn’t even enforce the limit as the kids usually can say they’re buying for their dads and the people working at the store isn’t paid enough to care. Elementary age kids are also bragging that they’ve been smoking too.

Don’t get me started on the online gambling too.

digdilem , to technology in CrowdStrike is sued by shareholders over huge software outage

By its own shareholders?

Are they just trying to get some money out before class actions from its customers decimate the company?

nehal3m ,

Fun fact: Decimation is originally a Roman practice. It’s a form of punishment where every tenth man in a group was executed by members of his cohort.

The bastard Jack Welch implemented this as a business practice with a sanitized name: rank your team, fire the worst 10%, even if the team did great.

Shareholders cheered at this practice. They bought shares in droves when businesses literally decimated themselves. Shareholders are mostly glorified gamblers with a boner for hardship. Making employees suffer is just dandy, as long as it can be sold as an improvement.

My point is that shareholders usually don’t know wtf they’re doing. This doesn’t surprise me.

davel , to worldnews in Venezuelans protest as observers say presidential vote undemocratic
@davel@lemmy.ml avatar
  • Independent observer says vote not democratic

The U.S.-based Carter Center, which observed the vote, said in a statement late on Tuesday the election “did not meet international standards of electoral integrity and cannot be considered democratic.”

The Carter Center is not independent: it was literally named after and created by a US president, the same US that wants Venezuela to de-nationalize/re-privatize their oil, and that recently failed a coup attempt

No_Ones_Slick_Like_Gaston , (edited )

This very center in the past certified Hugo Chavez elections and while US based it’s not receiving money endorsement or support from either of the contenders in this race; additionally was one of the few Maduro’s government allowed.

This does not make any difference on the facts that the electoral authority has failed to present results with a breakdown of where the votes have been casted and proclaimed Maduro the winner without disclosing the tallies of the process.

Please stop being an internet colonizer denying countries of their own election results when the Venezuelan government has NOT published them and the opposition has it organized by state, county, city, street and polling station showing Maduro lost.

IMO they targeted the worst one… but that’s assuming they’re interested in peace and not Bibi’s continued rule.

nondescripthandle ,

Just saying if Hamas assassinated the Israeli in charge of peace negotiations on foreign soil Gaza would be a plain of glass. I’d sooner believe the moon is made of cheese than think this was anything but Bibi trying to prolong his time as a free man by escalating purposely with two countries at once.

steventhedev ,

nominally, I agree that the immediate motives are Bibi’s self interest.

Strategically, this does drive a wedge between Hamas and Iran. Of the likely successors, Mashaal has had multiple conflicts with Iran, Abu Marzouk is a pragmatist who would probably start de-escalating, and al Hayya who is a hardliner. For two of those three, Hamas moves away from Iran which is probably a good thing for Israel.

Only time will tell though

“When I talk to young people, especially Gen Z, I tell them to set a budget and stick with it,” said Holly O’Neill, Bank of America’s president of retail banking.

What an unfathomably stupid comment to include in this article. As if Gen Z people have never heard of the concept of “sticking to a budget”.

To media-savvy people: why would they include something so stupid and obvious in this article?

Meron35 ,

I read this as a shady dig towards the Bank of America to show how out of touch they are.

Meltrax ,

Because this article isn’t written for Gen Z readers. It’s written for Boomers, the largest consumer bracket of random bullshit web articles like this, and they’ll read that line and think “yeah, dumb kids, they should just learn to budget, that’s what I had to do” and they’ll feel slightly superior and slightly satisfied and come back and click on the next article tomorrow, driving ad revenue because they’re too dumb to use ad blockers, and that’s literally the whole point of all of this.

HubertManne ,

also sticking to a budget is something you do when you have excess cash. When I was barely paying bills it was basically about saving every cent and praying but then the stress you sometimes break down and have something to eat out or such and then when you can't have your own place its easy to have a bit of money for fun but not nearly enough to pay rent.

rozodru ,
@rozodru@lemmy.ca avatar

I have a cousin in Grenada. Her area is fine, but some of the devastation she’s shown has been absolutely horrific.

The island that was worst hit is called Carriacou.

All the photos she shares of Grenada show a really beautiful place to live. Apart from the hurricanes, I do envy her.

That said, she has a house on the beach, so I’m guessing that house won’t be there in a few years.
