What system is this, by the way?

W6KME , to fediverse in There's no karma? [OC]

What a thought...we'll have to form opinions of people based upon what they write, not on points that could always be faked or whored. Popularity is an incredibly stupid measure of quality. I'd like to see the up/down arrow on threads replaced by a simple view counter, too.

abhibeckert ,

It's not about forming opinions though - it's about deciding what order to sort posts. Sorting by date / view count / upvote count is pretty crap. We only get away with it now because there aren't many people posting. That's changing.

Pretty much all social networks these days have some kind of "karma" like score, though it often isn't visible to anyone. Obviously in the fediverse it would be visible (though maybe not activley promoted?).

The best karma implementation that I know of is the one on Stack Exchange, though I'd like it more if it wasn't so easy to have a high score just by having been on the network for a long time (my score over there is ridiculously high for someone who barely participates these days).

W6KME ,

Just because the current system doesn't do what you want, you think going back to a system of cheating and popularity contests is good? Think carefully about that. Unless you're the sort who also refuses to listen to music that isn't on the Top Ten list and only goes to blockbuster movies. If that's the case, honestly the Fediverse may not be the place for you.

abhibeckert ,

If I wanted to use Reddit/Twitter/etc, I wouldn't have deleted my account on those two platforms. Definitely don't want the fediverse to go that direction.

But I personally believe the problems with those platforms are 100% the fault of the people running the place and the bad decisions they have made in the past and will continue to make in the future.

I think a karma based ranking algorithm, designed by a community that has the right intentions (find good content, and sort it at the top), will work well. Also I think the fediverse is uniquely able to find the right algorithm because each instance can potentially run a different ranking algorithm.

The same way some instances have "vote down" and other instances only have vote up. Time will tell which approach is better, and all the instances will surely adopt the best one.

W6KME ,

It may indeed all work out, but I cannot see any possible benefit at all to karma. No matter the intention, it allows opinions to be formed without reading content. People will almost always act like sheep, and too many people will associate karma with legitimacy. I think it would be an incredibly foolish thing to adopt it.

I just got the 353V a week ago. Great device, same form factor as OP with two analog sticks at the bottom for games that need them. Think I might pick up a few more so the kids will stop stealing mine.

Rottcodd , to fediverse in How should we be using Lemmy?
@Rottcodd@kbin.social avatar

When I first started looking around here, I had no particular reason to pick one instance, so I didn't. I initially registered with three (kbin.social, lemmy.world and lemmy.one). I was sort of planning to try them out and compare them before settling on one, but I ended up just rotating through them as the mood hit me, and I still use all three. And in fact, I'm planning on adding a couple more.

The thing I like about using multiple instances is that I can change my experience quickly and easily.

Mostly I go back and forth between kbin.social and lemmy.world, and they're notably different. In the first place, they use different software, so the interfaces are quite different. The kbin software is a bit more feature rich but also a bit harder to get around in while the lemmy software is a bit simpler in both respects. And the instances are notably different, since .world is federated with virtually everyone while kbin.social has defederated from a number of instances, and most notably all of the botfarms.

So kbin.social has less content of generally higher quality, so it feels more serious and sedate, while lemmy.world has more content but a lot of it is botspam, so it feels more hectic and noisy. And I just go to whichever one appeals to me more at the moment.

And I'm actually looking for a couple more. I'd like to find one that's deliberately reserved and sort of scholarly - high standards and serious discussion - and one that's overtly goofy snd lighthearted.

And I have no doubt that if they don't exist, they will.

BornVolcano ,

Idk how to switch between them. I tried signing into kbin with my Lemmy stuff and it just went nope. Maybe I messed up the password lol but I don't think so

RedSquadCampFollower ,

you can't do that

(for real)

BornVolcano ,

That. Really sucks. Idk it's all so fragmented, how do you know what is where and why?

RedSquadCampFollower ,

But the reason you can't log in on another server is just like you can't login to your hotmail address at gmail.com.

I’m using Mlem on iOS right now, seems pretty solid for the most part. I haven’t tried others yet, but now I will! Thanks!

I’ve settled my focus on Memmy with some periodic checks on Mlem. I’m a sucker to try as many new Lemmy apps as I can but Memmy is where I spend my time. The development pace is amazing.

Who is Lemmy? Is this an underground movement thing on the dark web or something?

betheydocrime ,

Ian Fraser Kilmister (24 December 1945 – 28 December 2015), better known as Lemmy Kilmister or simply Lemmy, was an English musician. He was the founder, lead singer, bassist and primary songwriter of the rock band Motörhead, of which he was the only continuous member, and a member of Hawkwind from 1971 to 1975.

I am on kbin. So, not going to meet him, I guess.

CthuluVoIP ,

I think at this point the distinction between the two is going to evaporate. It’s all Lemmy under the hood.

MxM111 ,

Not lemmy. Fediverse and Activity Pub (as protocol)

CthuluVoIP ,

Yes, but kbin is a literal fork of Lemmy.

MxM111 ,

You literally son of your father, yet, you are not your father.

Does kbin follows new versions of lemmy? If yes, then it would be the same. If no, then both lemmy and kbin have common ancestor, and yet they are different, and as time goes on, the differences will be more and more. The common part is the protocol and the fediverse.

I would have left the trees alone, but removed the grass and covered it with small black and grey stones. That way the trees would still look nice, and the rain water can still pass through the rocks and prevent flooding, unlike this mess. This looks like a business now, it’s not a home anymore.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

pass through the rocks and prevent flooding

Yah, that doesn’t work that way. Water needs to get pulled into plants or water channels created by dead plant root systems, or it just runs off. This is why deserts have flash floods.
