A lot of it is people misunderstanding the logic of “maintaining a lawn is horrible for the environment”. They think that, because they won’t be wasting thousands of gallons of water a month on their lawn that they should pave over it.
Which is a nice intent but mostly shows a misunderstanding of how grass/lawns (should) work. in moist climates you generally don’t actually need to water anything. You might have more weeds or some patchy grass, but natural rain will keep everything alive. And in more arid climates: you just don’t get Kentucky Bluegrass and instead get grass/clover/whatever seeds that make sense for your climate. Those generally need a bit of water to get started and then are fine until the end of time. They might not look like Leave it to Beaver’s yard, but you have roots to prevent soil erosion and it still looks pretty nice.
there’s a common misunderstanding in texas, as well, about cedar trees.
a while back, a ranch owner with ALOT of land, who was considered a great steward of trees, was interviewed for an article and stated that new cedars used too much water and that he tears them all out of areas where he wants to maintain a forest of alternate trees (i.e. oak, elm, whatever, idk)
everyone took that to mean tear out all cedar trees whether there was a forest of other trees or not, no matter how much land you have. they completely overlooked the qualifiers to practice this type of land management. (obviously owning cows are a different story, but almost none of these people own cows)
a ridiculous amount of land in Central Texas (esp the hill country) now is barren save the 1 or 2 odd scraggly oak trees here and there. anytime someone buys land (even a couple of acres) the first thing they do is clear cut the damn place, causing unnecessary erosion, bringing in uneeded heat, and in general, killing the ecosystems that made that area special in the first place.
why? people have the right to do what they want with their property.
if you don't believe that, they join a HOA and setup their bullshit regulations that require your lawn to be perfect and green or you get fined hundreds of dollars.
It’ll definitely be better than Reddit. Reddit has honestly gotten pretty terrible in the last few years. Fediverse may have its flaws but it’s still better than what Reddit has become (and ultimately what Reddit’s for-profit wannabes will become).
He has a small Insta following (@whippetBowie), and we posted often to Reddit where he made front page a few times.
But for some reason he seems to inspire fan art, we have a wall of Bowie art at the house. It’s honestly humbling and super weird when someone reaches out to tell us they painted our Whippet.
Here is what to do, use a script to delete everything from the sub and then delete the sub. If thry dont care about you, dont let them take yoyr sub and contiue making money.
I do think the question of who owns community content is nuanced. I put this comment here, you might say that means I own it and should be able to withdraw it - but it also doesn’t mean much of anything by itself, it needs your content to make sense. So who owns the discourse we are having? Me or you? Or whoever runs the server it is stored on - who must have some legal right to reproduce our content in order to provide the community space? Or the community as a whole? The combined content on Reddit represents an incredibly valuable store of information and learning - who does that belong to? Who should get to benefit from it?
Yeah, good advice for sure. I did in both bathrooms when we first moved in. I have a list of things I do for every new place I move into. Most of it should be done by the owner, but I know from experience, most don’t care or think of it.
I would imagine that we would’ve reached our limit on visual technology. The next step would be to integrate our other senses, like a haptic vest to feel the action in movies or something like that.
Good to see, but as with all posts like this, it’s important to note that the really important number is “Active Users” That number has gone up significantly as well, just not as fast as number of accounts.
From the docs: “Lemmy also shows counts of active users for your site, and its communities. These are counted within the last day, week, month, and half year, and are cached on starting up lemmy, and every hour.
An active user is someone who has posted or commented on our instance or community within the last given time frame. For site counts, only local users are counted. For community counts, federated users are included.”
I don’t know how to phrase this, but Reddit was getting filled with… Normal people? Nongeeks? The socially adept?
I’m sooo glad to be back with silly peeps. I missed that sense of critical self awareness haha. And I’ve been able to express some controversial opinions without getting locked and banned, which is mellowing as fuck.
I believe reddit was simply filled with all kinds of people. There is an array of subs to choose from with different interests and activity levels. I find it silly that people on reddit consider themselves “non-normal” and “geeky”. I don’t think you’re that special.
