4th* of July here in the US is one of the hardest days for one of my dogs. Hold on, Hilde, you'll pull through.

Lemmy feels like Reddit 10-15 years ago, which is great.

soar ,

Yup! As someone with a 16 year old reddit account, I’ve seen it all. This feels like back in the day

Nostr and Lemmy, these are now my only social networks. No more corporate and government control.

Ok, that is a potential dangerous person you don’t want in your life. Be polite, calm and non provocative and get away from her. In the end she will switch her fixation from you.

WiildFiire ,

The screenshots say it’s from 2017 but good on ya for being supportive

Gerula ,

Hihi, didn’t catch the date 😁. I guess that if is he’s here to post this thing went well for him, he survived 😜!

Rhynoplaz ,

I think you swapped the genders there. I was thinking the same at first, but the last panel makes me think that it’s a man harassing a woman.

Gerula ,

Honestly I think they could be anything because the words are so mashed together it’s hard to make a conclusion …

That seems like good news. Interesting to see US drug policy being more lenient than the UK in many instances.

We done did it, doin it out here, big things, wildin, etc… Seriously though, I’m happy to be a part of this as a recent redditfugee. I’m never going back. I miss r/emo, I miss r/oneyplays, I miss r/twosentencehorror, I miss all my saved posts and threads, but I’m not fucking around with Reddit on principle, and also as everyone here has been so kind and helpful. I was in a community that posted something about Lemmy being founded as an anti-corpo movement and that’s cool as hell and aligns with how I am. So yes yes, I’m all in on exploring and growing this Undiscovered Country

Smallletter , to memes in 4 panels

I was 21 in 2008, and I’d been a fan of Ctrl Alt Del since near it’s beginning. I was a huge web comic fan in general, and I got intensely emotionally invested in them, even the silly ones.

This strip hit me exactly as he intended it to. It resonated with me I guess because of my brother and sister in law going through a miscarriage shortly before. Either way, it had a powerful impact on me and I didn’t see this “tonal shift” as a problem. That’s kinda dumb if you ask me, lots and lots of comedies have serious moments.

Anyway, I didn’t know this meme until a few years ago and it always makes me sad. It’s dumb, I know.

I’m super sensitive to negativity, which is why I was always a lurker in reddit, I always got shat on whenever I shared anything, to the point that I’d just delete my account and hide from the internet for a while.

squaresinger ,

Tbh, the “tonal shift” had been happening for a long time. This was not out of the blue at all. It was only unexpected for the “A comic must and can only be funny” crowd.

Serinus ,

It felt more like he was trying to exploit the concept for attention and popularity in the most tone-deaf, transparent way possible.

I still think it was more of a business decision than anything else.

Thanks for the reminder to delete my Instagram account. Though I’ve never posted anything there, I’ve used it to follow some people.

Is it too much to hope that all of Meta crashes and burns? It’s infuriating seeing Meta, and corporations like them, harvest all of our information…

spiderkle ,
@spiderkle@lemmy.ca avatar

So far Threads has been blocked in the EU because of data privacy concerns. If they don’t show that their code is keeping data stored safely and in the EU it will continue being flagged in all appstores.

What I can’t figure is… who sits down and thinks “fuck Elon Musk and Twitter, I’m sick of this bullshit” and then follows that logic with “you know what I need more of in my life? Fuckin’ FACEBOOK, yeah.”

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

I think novelty is an unfortunately large part of this. I day unfortunately because I think it’s very lame that we find creating accounts on servers providing the same service as another service we already an account on … interesting.

“We were promised flying cars and instead got 160 characters”. Well now we’ve got 160 characters … twice?!

Meaningless superficial cheap FOMO weaponised as advertising fodder. Shameful really.

This is so true. I wish there was a will/way to eliminate bots altogether on a platform. The more popular a platform is, the more bots swarm in to sway the opinions of the crowd - political opinions, consumer opinions, you name it. Reddit was lousy with bots. Constant ceaseless opinion farming. What’s to stop Lemmy from becoming just as obnoxious?

they can be sued for this right?

Holyhandgrenade , (edited )
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, and then they’ll be fined for what looks like a huge amount of money to us regular folks but to a corporation like Meta is essentially a slap on the wrist, and they’ll keep doing illegal shit.
We really need to start charging corporations GDP of Switzerland-level sums if we want them to behave ethically.

refurbishedrefurbisher ,

Nah, the fine needs to be equal to what their revenue was from having that illegal thing to begin with.

JunctionSystem ,

Cat: Not equal, triple. Need to make it HURT.

Aqarius ,

I mean, if the US is serious about the whole “corporate personhood” thing, surely that makes corporations eligible for the death penalty?

refurbishedrefurbisher ,

You’re assuming the Supreme Court has legitimacy and principles. About that…

zuhayr ,
@zuhayr@lemmy.world avatar
damnYouSun ,

The rule of GDPR is €10,000 or 5% of annual gross earnings (not net) per incident, whichever is greater.

Even the likes of Meta don’t want to deal with that kind of fine hence why Threads has not been released in the EU.

So it is totally achievable, the problem is the US government don’t actually want to fix the problem because of lobbying.

I’m from Germany, so no native English speaker. Why does it still sound wrong in my ears? Is it the way we have to open the mouth to make those sounds, and it feels unnatural in a different order?

feedum_sneedson ,

Or maybe it’s a Germanic language thing, Zick Zack, you know.

SanndyTheManndy ,

English is basically bastardized German, so that’s probably it

nehl ,

Another reason might be, that you consumed so much English media, that you got used to the correct order?

Schwip Schwap. In fact, ablaut is a German word: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-European_ablaut

It’s common to all Indo-European languages to some degree
