After going through the painful experience of trying to export my hundreds of saved Reddit posts in a smart manner a couple of weeks ago I would definitely love to avoid the same with Lemmy. This certainly looks like something that can help me with that.

Thanks for your hard work!

LGUG2Z OP ,

If I can even help one person avoid that same fate, it’s worth it!

I’m ashamed to admit I’m a former reddit premium member. I canceled my subscription after being a paying member for a number of years the day Spez started his bullshit. I just can’t see myself going back. I just need to find an instance for my country that’s actually active.

darkmugglet ,

Meh, why be ashamed? Reddit was well liked until this bullshit started. I am only judging those that are still premium members.

nonexcludable ,

I loved Reddit, and I still love Reddit. I love so many little communities. And although I am persuaded that the fediverse is the future, I would go back in a heartbeat if it managed to regrow a soul. I happily paid for premium back in the day.

I really like Mastodon but it’s so hard to find other people that you have on Twitter. Lemmy is closer but i’m still gonna miss out on some small communities from Reddit

Yep, Mastodon takes some effort to get going. You need to find people who are interesting for you yourself, in order to seed your feed with interesting stuff. And it goes much smoother if you also interact yourself, which is where many lurkers, used to Twitter and its algorithm feeding them content, hit a wall. It’s just a completely different world in there.

snowfalldreamland , to linux in Software alternatives for Linux

For somebody wanting to get started with making digital music is it best to stick to flstudio or Ableton or are there beginner friendly yet fully featured DAWs for linux?

featherfurl ,

I don’t think there’s a clear best here. If you find using wine easier than learning new music software, then sticking with what you know is best. If you’re flexible about your process, there are a lot of amazing free tools and you’ll probably have a more seamless time developing a workflow around them.

Personally I think learning different software is a great way to build a more flexible understanding of the fundamentals of music production, but everyone has different needs so I don’t think there’s a one size fits all approach.

Ardour recently go a lot of Ableton style features in version 7. Zrhythm looks pretty solid. Reaper isn’t foss, but is run by a small & trustworthy team and is my main DAW, though I’m exploring less daw heavy workflows recently. VCV Rack is an incredible piece of software that has thousands of modules and is like having an entire warehouse full of modular synth gear but digitally. Cardinal is a fully self contained version of VCV Rack that works as a plugin and has ~1000 open source modules built in. Bitwig isn’t foss, but borrows heavily from the Ableton paradigm, has their own twist, and has always natively supported linux. Tracktion Waveform isn’t foss but looks pretty cool, depending on what suits your workflow.

snowfalldreamland ,

thanks your thorough response! I’ll have a look!

Uh yes. Example: What was all that flak when bakery’s denied service to lesbian couples. What is next deny service to whites? Hate is going full circle, hence the hypocrisy. Shit like that is only giving ammunition to the othersides.

ComfyMuffin ,

We did a case study on this in college. The bakery didn’t refuse service to them, they told the couple that they were more than welcome to pick any of the predesigned cakes they had, but the bakery wouldn’t make a pride specific cake.

Platomus ,

Hate towards beiefs is fine, and I think you’d even agree with that. Would you agree it’s bad to believe that a subset groups of people should be removed from the world? I would hope you agree that that is a bad belief and doesn’t need to be accepted.

But it’s also missing the point. Being gay isn’t a belief, it’s just the way someone is - just like race, just like gender. It’s not a belief like a political stance is.

They’re two different things and it’s not hypocritical to treat them differently.

littlecolt , to piracy in Does the idea of this concern anyone else? Why is no one talking about it?

I switched to pop os recently and I’m never going back to Windows. It’s easier now than ever to switch to Linux, even for gamers. Steam, proton, and wine have made running your Windows apps and games in Linux so easy. You’d have to have a very specific use case to justify staying with Windows now.

Here’s a fun one: I own two video capture devices, an Elgato HD 60 S and an Avermedia LiveGamer Portable 2. Both do not work in Linux. I found a simple USB HDMI capture device that works in Linux and cost a fraction of what thosmother overhyped ones cost me. It works way better than they ever did. That was one of my last adjustments. I can still stream my Switch and PS5 on Twitch, no problem.

That’s a pretty niche use case and it was easy.
