Deleted my 10 year account with hundreds of posts and thousands of comments. I have to admit, leaving reddit has created a sort of vacuum in my life, and I have been spending more time scrolling on facebook, news sites and other shitty services. I’m happy to finally have landed on lemmy, but it has been a bit bumpy with the instability on lemmy.world.
Lemmy is getting there but it’s still not a great replacement, especially when it comes to niche topics. For example, the Venture Bros movie came out recently and I wanted to discuss it with other fans, but there’s no place on lemmy for that; or if there is, I have been unable to find it. Meanwhile the Venture Bros subreddit has 3 different megathreads. I’m keeping my reddit account around for things like that until lemmy grows a bit more.
It is technically a movie, sure. But more accurately, it’s the conclusion to a show that’s been on the air for almost 20 years. It’s not a movie made to stand on it’s own. Posting it to a movie sub makes as much sense as posting about ancient Roman senators in a politics sub. It’s technically politics, but you’re not going to get very meaningful discussion because it’s not what people go there for. The only people who would watch this movie are fans of the show, and even if a non-fan watched it, why would I give a shit about their opinion of it? They aren’t going to get it.
Yeah I filled that vacuum by learning how to solve a Rubiks cube, and now I’m trying to do it faster. Sync for Lemmy came out and felt just like Sync for Reddit and I was a bit worried I’d fall back into my old ways, which I kind of am tbh, I just have to make sure I’m not on Lemmy as much as Reddit somehow.
Ignore /c/all and be selective about the communities you subscribe to. In addition to other unfortunate browsing behaviours I also started lifting weights and climbing, so something good came out of it 😄
Nope, the placebo effect can have physical effects and be genuinely curative. The level to which this is the case is highly variable from patient to patient, but it is inaccurate to say that is limited to improving sensation and perception of illness. Not to mention, in many cases the malady being treated is one of perception, for example, in pain management. And alleviating pain in itself has downstream positive effects on disease progression and patient QOL.
Actual chronic pain sufferer here. If I had a dollar every time placebo and positive thinking was prescribed to me, I would have enough to maybe hire a doctor who won’t systemically downplay or dismiss my pain because of my age and gender.
I hope you do, because no good peer-reviewed studies ever produced the results you are talking about. I urge you to show me which ones you are talking about.
And you should learn to look closer. Maybe get more that a couple of words out of headline, you know, how scientificly minded people are suppose to be.
You are literally spouting out of your ass. There are multiple peer reviewed papers which show how the body can regenerate itself through placebo effect.
It’s real and verified just like grass. Go touch some. You are way out of your depth here.
QED is actually the opposite of a conspiracy theory channel or organisation. They’re very pro science and critical thinking, and spend a lot of time debunking conspiracy theories and pseudo-science.
I’ve got no skin in the debate in this thread, I didn’t watch the actual video and have no opinion on the validity of what you or the other posters are saying, I’m just pointing out that I think that you’re wrong to dismiss the channel as a source, even if you disagree with the claims made in that specific video.

I see it like many ‘real’ medicines that alleviate symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms are the ones causing the issues, EX. a fever to kill germs can kill braincells. But like any medicine that alleviates symptoms, it can also hide problems. So I see it as a case by case thing.
The thing here is that some medicine doesn’t really heal either. Paracetamol is just a pain suppressant, and ibuprofen partially suppresses it while accelerating blood flow and thus reducing inflammation, which is why it’s used for sore throat, to avoid more friction and let the throat heal by itself.
Aleviating pain is sometimes what your body needs to start focusing on healing itself. It’s not a miracle but it works when it does.
Say8ng that placebo effect doesn’t heal you isn’t really that revealing, plenty medicine doesn’t either and that’s okay, that’s not their objective.
Ads don’t make sense. I pay a fiver for the Netflix subscription with ads. I get ads for expensive cars. Do they really think I can afford an expensive car, but not a tenner?
Reminds me how people who have been paying much more in rent each month for years, often decades, are constantly refused mortgages for being “high risk” 🤦
It makes sense when you look at reality rather than lies. They want to own you. Everything is set up to make it so they own you and you cannot rebel because you own no means of survival.
That’s because if the rates suddenly go up, you won’t be able to afford the mortgage and you’ll go bankrupt. If your rent goes too high, you can just find a cheaper place.
I am compelled to point out here that one does not have to go with a variable rate mortgage. I would say one should never go with a variable rate mortgage for exactly the reason you state.
Additionally, rent is insane. One might not find cheaper rent, without getting help from the state. And if you make more than $60,000 a year, good luck with that.
I only partly agree. The part remembers all those situations where a comment on reddit almost made me spit out my coffee while at work because I found it truly hilarious
