as much as i hate elon musk tho, it is a sort of reasonable strategy in case you’re trying to prevent incurring further hosting charges while you’re migrating 🤷‍♀️

not sure why he can’t just pay the hosting bill but whatever, that’s secondary i guess

0xD ,

No, letting your contract run out before you have properly migrated is not a reasonable strategy, it’s mind-boggingly stupid and pathetic.

k_o_t ,
@k_o_t@lemmy.ml avatar

idk about you but i’ve no idea about how twitter is run, there’s plenty of reasons they would be unable or prefer not to do that 🤷‍♀️

FloatingAlong ,

i’ve no idea about how twitter is run

Incompetently, from the looks of it.

0xD ,

There is literally no reason to do it like that other than incompetence. Platform migrations, especially for something as large as Twitter, are incredibly large undertakings that need a lot of skilled people. All those skilled people have long continued their careers at other companies.

You don’t need to know how Twitter is run, that is simply IT and business management 102.

i’m assuming that cessation of twitter’s existence (due to lack of funds taken up by skyrocketing hosting bills) would be an even worse strategy for retaining users and maintaining desirable stock value

Something that can’t be stolen is not property. You can only copy a stream of bits not steal. You can also replicate it to infinity. A pound of gold is real property. You can definitely steal it and you can’t replicate it.

if I recall correctly many adblockers (including uBlock origin) stopped working a while ago on chrome when chrome implemented manifest v3.0 for extensions

dingus OP ,

Hasn’t happened quite yet. uBlock Origin on Chrome is much less robust than on Firefox, that’s for sure. Manifest 3 is finishing it’s rollout this month and we’re looking at not being able to functionally use adblockers in Chrome very soon.

This is reddit killing third party apps, because even if you did subscribe you’re still not getting NSFW because reddit is taking that out of the API anyways

So who would pay literally more for less? Reddit can say all they want about supporting 3rd party but even the blind could see through them

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s not actually correct, it’s not change in individual actions that needs to happen but systemic change. People act in the way that makes sense for them to act given the circumstances they’re in on individual level. What needs to change is the economic system to move away from consumerism, production of disposable goods, planned obsolescence and so on. This can only happen when the economy is publicly owned and directed towards the goal of profitability as opposed to towards creating as much profit as possible for people who own the companies.

maporita , to worldnews in 2023 Edelman report shows that China has the highest trust in government

Citizens of authoritarian countries often trust their governments more than those in liberal democracies. This apparent paradox is easily explained by the tight control these governments maintain over what people can see and hear. Since Tiananmen the Chinese government has ramped up it’s campaign to eradicate any opinions that are contrary to the government line, and now a whole generation has grown up in this new, hermetically sealed environment.

pancake ,
@pancake@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s impossible to systematically lie to an entire country’s population about the country itself. It’s never happened anywhere on Earth and will never do so with current technology. It is however trivial to lie about other countries, which I like to always keep in mind. Think for a moment what reason a Chinese person would even have to dislike their government, when they are clearly doing a good job and actually solving their problems. Even the victims of Tiananmen weren’t those often talked-about “pro-Democracy” students, most were anti-liberalization communist worker protestors.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

Buddy, entire books have been written on how western oligarch owned media works with western regimes to manipulate public opinion. Here are a couple you should read:

Thing is that no amount of propaganda can counter the actual lived experience of the people in a country. This is why there is growing social unrest despite the west having the most sophisticated and best funded propaganda in the world. People can see that their lives are constantly getting worse and they’ve lost trust in the system and the media.

If people’s material conditions in China were declining the same way they are in the west, then people in China would lose faith in their system too. Yet, the opposite is happening because people are seeing their lives improve drastically with each an every decade.
