If we make this better automated, then we can save a lot of time and effort after just 10 apocalyptic events

CanadaPlus , to programmerhumor in Ah you're finally awake!

Time to brush up on my line editor skills.

So what should we do differently this time?

marcos ,

If you hire a developer some day by the 90’s, and he says to you he wants to make lisp for some strange niche platform; don’t berate him.

Oh, and for mankind’s sake, give him more than a week to work on it.

CanadaPlus ,

Maybe we can spend actual time on the web browser scripting language too.

Back in the day when the only copyright protection was scare tactics. Anyway looks like an ad for a software product, not actually anti-piracy propaganda. Nostalgic none the less. There was a time when all software was obtained through floppies. I sure was glad to see those go, damn things failed more often than they worked. I kept a big box of blank ones and copied everything off three times in case the first two failed.

Something that can’t be stolen is not property. You can only copy a stream of bits not steal. You can also replicate it to infinity. A pound of gold is real property. You can definitely steal it and you can’t replicate it.

Holzkohlen ,

Maybe it’s like Diamonds. You can absolutely make diamonds in a lab without any bloodshed and people will be like “the blood is what makes it special”. Maybe the “original” bits make it special?

Variden3301 , to piracy in anti-piracy magazine ad from 1993

For the record yes I would steal a car if the owners car didn’t disappear

You mean make a copy of the car then.

Copy anyways and then downloads car

shiham , to programmerhumor in Electron is shit

Not just about RAM, it’s that most popular electron apps (like discord) ships really old versions of electron, and the some other electron app on your system may need another version of electron

You end up CVEs and duplicates of electron

as much as i hate elon musk tho, it is a sort of reasonable strategy in case you’re trying to prevent incurring further hosting charges while you’re migrating 🤷‍♀️

not sure why he can’t just pay the hosting bill but whatever, that’s secondary i guess

0xD ,

No, letting your contract run out before you have properly migrated is not a reasonable strategy, it’s mind-boggingly stupid and pathetic.

k_o_t ,
@k_o_t@lemmy.ml avatar

idk about you but i’ve no idea about how twitter is run, there’s plenty of reasons they would be unable or prefer not to do that 🤷‍♀️

FloatingAlong ,

i’ve no idea about how twitter is run

Incompetently, from the looks of it.

0xD ,

There is literally no reason to do it like that other than incompetence. Platform migrations, especially for something as large as Twitter, are incredibly large undertakings that need a lot of skilled people. All those skilled people have long continued their careers at other companies.

You don’t need to know how Twitter is run, that is simply IT and business management 102.

Duamerthrax ,

Even if that was true, but it’s a terrible strategy for retaining users and stock value.

k_o_t ,
@k_o_t@lemmy.ml avatar

i’m assuming that cessation of twitter’s existence (due to lack of funds taken up by skyrocketing hosting bills) would be an even worse strategy for retaining users and maintaining desirable stock value

Duamerthrax ,

Do you have any proof that google’s rates are going up or are you just taking Elon at face value? Because if you are taking Elon at face value, I have some crypto to sell you.

Banzai51 ,

So if you were moving to another home or apartment, is it a reasonable strategy to stop paying rent at your current home while you’re looking for a new place? Of course not. Same idea here.

k_o_t ,

if your current rent suddenly because very expensive, or you can’t afford the current rent bc you lost your job, then ye, it’s not a reasonable option, but the only option 🤷‍♀️

Ah yes, poor Elon is too poor to pay his bills. And Google must have suddenly increased the prices, it’s not like they have contracts to adhere to regarding those kinda things.
