This actually confused me this morning using Mobile Safari. The ‘X’ is on the opposite side corner from the normal close button.

I’ve read many times that letter shapes aren’t subject to copyright in the US (or, as far as I know, most other countries) but font names can be trademarked. That’s why you can get freeware knockoffs of a lot of popular fonts where everything but the name is identical to the real thing.

Not even that, it is the Unicode Character “𝕏” (U+1D54F).

What “inspired by”, buddy literally just jacked that X from the font. What a company boy…

PS: FWIW, Musk says that’s the “interim” logo (lol).

Makes sense.

Elon undoubtedly has folders full of cool images he's saved, so while he was still focused on the "X" idea, he rummaged around and found that one and thought, "Yeah! This is gonna be sick dude!"

Thus are decisions made by the world's richest teenage edgelord.

qrtr ,

It’s well known that X is the edgiest letter.

DJDarren ,

W has more edges, therefore I’m claiming W.com as a social media site only for the most reactionary right wing chuds.

Anticorp ,

Pssh, Z is the ultimate ending.

agitatedpotato ,

Im surprised he didnt use two Zs to make his logo.

Anticorp ,

Double ultimate! What can get more ultimate than that? Surely nothing.

PinkPanther ,

And the ZZ’s will be yellow, so it’s easy to spot and be recognisable.

Sheltac ,

Could even flip them horizontally for extra spiciness.

Why didn’t he use the Cool S, tho?

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Shh, that’s for his next venture.

Elon has trauma from being ousted as CEO by the board at x.com (the company that would later become PayPal).

He’s living in the past.

victron ,
@victron@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t know that. What a lame and petty mfer

I_Has_A_Hat ,

Let me get this straight; you actually think Elon Musk, himself, combed through images he personally saved, found the X, and personally submitted it as the logo replacement.

Elon Musk. The crazy douche billionaire. You really think he sat at his computer and spent time doing that.

You don’t think, maybe, just maybe, a man with more money than God might have gotten someone else to do it? I can see him being out of touch and not caring enough about quality to say “go with that one” without checking where it came from. But I just can’t see Musk himself looking through fonts to find an “X” that he likes.

Duamerthrax ,

Yes. Yes I do.

Rottcodd ,
@Rottcodd@kbin.social avatar

looking through fonts to find an "X" he likes

So... you didn't read the OP.

Yes though - I really do believe that he personally chose it, or more likely already had it in mind.

And then he played some Diablo IV, then jerked off, then played some more Diablo IV.

phx ,

Dude doesn’t even pay for the rent on his office buildings. Did we really expect he’d pay for fonts or creative work?

And it looks like this:

No, I don’t think I will.

Lifes_Like_Plinko ,

Thank you! I’ve been aware of this and was using it, but it quit working for me. There’s definitely a syntax error in the ‘Link’ button above the ‘reply’ text box. It doesn’t include the assclamation mark. But I’m thinking I manually followed your example, with the assclamation mark.

How long have you been using this, and have you experienced an interuption?

Thanks again!

oatscoop ,

It’s weird on my instance: the button itself seems to have disappeared entirely at some point. I’ve just been typing it in for the time being.

Edit: There’s also the formatting guide available here. Manually typing the markdown seems to avoid issues.

Lifes_Like_Plinko ,

Okay, thanks. We’ll get there.

It was probably a LUMs error on my end, anyway. (Lack of User Memory)

Musk’s logo for “X” is literally just Unicode Character “𝕏” (U+1D54F).
Which means that can’t trademark the logo.

mastodon.social/…/110768836422832847

koper ,

That’s not accurate. Copyright and trademark are two different things. The name “twitter” is also just a combination of preexisting characters and the word was probably in use before the company was founded. You can still trademark existing things because trademarks are about preventing consumer confusion, not protecting original creations.

Musk does have a problem with copyright if it turns out this specific design was made by someone else.

FlowVoid ,

The US Patent and Trademark Office is generally reluctant to enforce single-letter trademarks, and some countries ban them outright.

FlowVoid ,

The good news is that “x com” can be trademarked.

The bad news is that “x com” is already trademarked.

MJBrune ,

xcom is trademarked as a video game. There can be existing trademarks in different spaces. So you could easily get an xcom social media site trademarked.

FlowVoid ,

Yes, it’s trademarked for use in video games.

And by another company for use in sporting equipment.

And by another company for fiber optics.

And by another company, as follows…

Telecommunications services, namely, transmission of voice, data, graphics, images, audio, and video via the internet

Yeah, maybe should’ve stuck with “Twitter”

MJBrune ,

We’ll see. The reality is that if you pay enough you can probably get the trademark off of anyone.

FlowVoid ,

True, but Twitter X isn’t exactly flush with cash right now. And if it aspires to be an “everything app”, it might take more than one payoff.

MJBrune ,

I mean if Elon is going to push it, he has plenty of cash to invest into the company to buy out anything. He’s also not above just using his personal assets for the company. E.g. X.com now redirects to Twitter.com.

MasterCelebrator ,

Thats true but anyway it doesnt make sense do trash a Brand that has becone verb, has its Logo on Millionen of Websites and is refered to by probably every news Website in existence. Imagine if McDonalds changed their golden M to a gray O.

ffolkes ,
@ffolkes@fanexus.com avatar

ffolkes ,
@ffolkes@fanexus.com avatar

Yeah… But maybe not ANYONE… “Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has already registered an ‘X’ logo in connection to ‘online social networking services’ and ‘social networking services in the fields of entertainment, gaming, and application development.’”

nzodd ,

That’s too many letters though. I’m starting to think this imbecile is just tired of sounding out all seven letters multiple times a day. X is nice and simple, like him.
