A lot of people have had their lives turned upside down by this guy. They may not be literal kings but the hierarchical nature of employment, together with the role money plays in politics, gives billionaires a lot of power over our lives.

UprisingVoltage ,

Rich people influence your life even if they’re not politicians. Using their money and influence they push parties and organizations that push their interests, which are usually the exact opposite of what benefits ordinary people

Open source, open standards, open protocols. We need to stop allowing centralized control which let the rich accumulate more power.

Ganbat , to linux in My post about Lemmy in reddit got filtered as spam

Yep, I talked about this on Reddit a couple weeks ago. They started putting filters against Lemmy instances up almost as soon as people started talking about moving. They started with small instances, but now they’re moving on to the larger ones.

I had to use kek.gg just to share a link to my new community to the old subreddit.

Edit: Is this really a three-year-old thread or is something wrong? If it is, how did it end up at the top of my “hot” feed!?

midas , to worldnews in 2023 Edelman report shows that China has the highest trust in government

Ah edelman, the consultancy bureau who helps countries prop up their image. This shit is about as believable as Qatar getting to host the world cup on merit. Imagine seeing this graph and thinking hmmm all these countries who have authoritarian and oppressive governments must be really good to their citizens, instead of thinking that people who speak out of line get shafted lmao.

It’s bought propaganda. It’s like being the shitty student in class who pays a hacker to adjust their grades but instead of something a bit believable asks for an A+. Anyways this shit isn’t even meant for the outside world, it’s just to affirm to their own people that being oppressed is a-OK.

Pili ,

I don’t know about you, but I would rather live in a country with an authoritarian and oppressive government that takes care of its citizens, instead of an authoritarian and oppressive government that oppresses its citizens to protect landlords and corporations profits like I do now.

midas ,

You realize Edelman used altered surveys for China right? Some questions were left and others were changed because otherwise some people wouldn’t want to participate.

So yeah, I’d rather live somewhere where I can voice my true opinion on my government without fear.

Pili ,

Could you expand on that? What was the content of the surveys and what where the difference? And where does he state that?

midas ,

For the 2023 report, it said, it removed certain questions and answer options for China and Thailand.. It’s not possible to say which ones because they don’t publish that info.

ScotinDub , to linux in NixOs why?

I wonder in practice how easy it is to copy your nix config to another machine. Sounds amazing but aren’t the configurations very hardware dependent?

flashgnash ,

Having tried it on multiple different it’s not seamless but it’s a damn sight better than setting up many machines manually

The configurations are not particularly hardware dependant as for the most part NixOS handles drivers and such transparently and just gets whatever it decides is best for your hardware (unless you override it)

The main hardware specific config I have is to use Nvidia proprietary drivers, as it defaults to nouvea

Tl:Dr 90% of your config will transfer and you have to do a little fiddling to get it all up and running but it’s all way easier than building from scratch
