I’m actually shocked by the growth of threads, I underestimated how much people don’t care about their digital privacy.

rarely ,

What they don’t know will hurt them, sadly.

Bro. It’s a public forum. What ‘digital privacy’ are you talking about?

This digital privacy.

People don’t understand what they’re doing literally signing away their data and accepting these Terms of Service.

guyman ,

What are you talking about?

If users are okay with giving up that information then that’s their choice. Stop being patronizing and condescending just because people don’t care about the things you do. It’s very childish.

GONADS125 ,

You’re obviously arguing in bad faith, using ad hominen on everyone with a dissenting view, spamming the hypocritical accusation of others making hollow statements, and you’re also hypocritically emotionally charged in your arguments. You’re either trolling or extremely self-deluded.

You are using a social network on some random dude’s server.

    ashok36 ,

Any random person is at least a hundred times more ethical than mark Zuckerberg.

    emperorbenguin ,

You overestimate the ethics of random human beings.

Atleast zuck is beholden to pretend to be ethical.

    jxrdsn ,
    @jxrdsn@infosec.pub avatar

That is very true, but I have a little more trust in this random dude’s server where he gets access to what? He sees my IP address? Than a corp that collects an unnecessary amount of user info for the sole purpose of keeping you locked into their apps with little disregard for health. While also pimping your info out to any persons with $2 to their name.

    dustojnikhummer ,

Yeah I wouldn’t take on hosting a public instance, especially in EU, as it comes with all sorts of legal shite

tbf, that’s every social network isn’t it?

    straF ,

Which is why we should federate. People have the choice to use a low availability “private” server hosted by amateurs on lemmy or use something secure and distributed that works 100%.

A little warning: the site owners on lemmy could be doing many malicious things. The simplest is the ability to drop trackers in the sites header section. However they could have dns based trackers that are invisible to end users. And thats just tracking so far. The only reason we know facebook is a slime bag is years and years of leaks.

Okay, but depending on how “female” is said, it is often used in a derogatory way by incels and misogynists.

I don’t think I’ve ever been referred to as female outside of someone being creepy… I also haven’t heard men referred to as „males“ outside of bad romance novels either. You may now downvote :P

Every few years I go back to giving JS a chance and every time I'm left frustrated. At least it's not as bad as it was a decade ago I guess

    abraxas ,

So bizarre how life experience drives attitude. I’m one of those who has worked in a dozen languages, and Javascript (well, Typescript now) simply wins out for me. I run a C# team right now (have been for nearly a decade), and I can say as much as I love my job I hate the language. We get less done with slower code and with more bugs and more (very talented) people than the little $10M operation 4 of us did with node.js a couple jobs ago.

And as an aftethought since language and tooling are different topics… the ops toolchains for javascript are so much better than anything I’ve worked in any other language. Code released to production often ends up costing us less (dollar value) in the time to deploy, and then less per-user and per-hour.

I know a lot of C# diehards and I respect their passion. I just cannot relate to their experience. And I can say that with over a decade of experience in many of the languages in the original meme.

Coreidan , to programmerhumor in optimal java experience

This thread reminds me that most “developers” are terrible and don’t take the time to understand the language.

All of these Java developers you guys hate is the result of schools pushing out idiots. It’s not the language but rather the type of people you hire. These people will suck at writing in any language regardless of what order they try.

    cloudy1999 ,

Agreed, good tools can be used badly. Over the years I’ve written Java, C++, and PHP professionally, and I’ve seen excellent and horrible impls in each. Today, I mostly use Java and this thread is reminding me that I need to learn a new for-fun language.

Learn kotlin, it’s awesome and runs on literally everything.

    clutchmatic ,

Kotlin won’t save your skin if the code you wrote should be performant but you layered it into a heap of abstract classes, interfaces, factories, etc and, realistically, no one else would use or expand on that

    loutr ,
    @loutr@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sure, but nobody codes like that in kotlin (or in modern Java for that matter)

This metaphor works very well with these two pictures. In the upper picture the more senior cattle are projecting the new and young. And in the picture below even they don’t even stand a chance alone.

nonstopshirtflutter , to programmerhumor in Alphabetically sorted months. But WHY?

Everyone is saying this was impossible to solve without fixing the underlying tool, but just writing a prefixes from 01 to 12 would have been my solution.

Now you don’t even need to remember the months to select the correct one.
