TheAnonymouseJoker OP ,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree, I hate all the Sync subscription shilling in my feed. I also hate its personal data spying. Sync fanboys should shut the fuck up and buy subscription and use it silently, like other Jerboa/Connect/Liftoff/Infinity users. Sync fanboys are doing this “BTW I use Arch Sync” crap with posts and comments.

I used paid Sync Dev reddit for a few years, and now I hate it because of its fanbase’s antics.

@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

This discourse in these comments is stupid. People can complain about Sync if they have something to complain about. It’s a fucking forum. Personally I hate the idea of restricting features and using ads to get people to pay, especially when I have several FOSS apps that work perfectly for me, I don’t think Sync feels any more “slick”.

There, that’s my opinion. I don’t like Sync and I’m not attacking anyone for using it.

Okay. I have something to complain about, too. It’s people complaining too much about Sync.

Stumblinbear ,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

They aren’t using ads to “get people to pay” they’re using ads to pay for people who don’t want to pay

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes, the ads make a little money. But it’s still a problem you create then sell the solution to. It’s at least half the reason to do ads.

Stumblinbear ,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Not really. The alternative is charging for the app in the first place, but if you do that your app fails. You include ads to help pay for development and ongoing expenses.

Offering a subscription to remove them for those that want to is secondary to that. Very few people actually subscribe to anything at all unless they absolutely have to. You’d be surprised to learn how few users actually pay to remove ads–like oftentimes less than one percent

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s not the only alternative.

Stumblinbear ,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

Do bless me with your knowledge, then. Donations don’t work. You don’t want ads. You don’t want subscription fees. People hate paying for apps.

There is no other option other than working for free.

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

Donations work. The dev clearly has many loyal fans willing to pay. Look at Jerboa/Lemmy’s donation pages. It’s good money.

Besides this I’m not even saying the dev shouldn’t do it. I’m just explaining that I don’t like it.

I gladly donate to FOSS software devs because the product never forces me to log in for a feature or get a key or see an ad. The app doesn’t get any of the bloat required to do that stuff either. I just don’t want to use Sync and it’s not because I’m cheap

Stumblinbear ,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

It’s good money.

The Lemmy dev is making around 30k a year. Subtract taxes from that and he’s making maybe 25k (at best).

They’re very clearly extremely talented software engineers, and you’re telling me $12 an hour is “good money”? That’s not even above minimum wage in many US states! Do you have any idea how much software engineers make?

norawibb ,
@norawibb@sh.itjust.works avatar

Doesn’t have to be the only thing you do. Where do you think FOSS software comes from?

Stumblinbear ,
@Stumblinbear@pawb.social avatar

People working for free, very rarely company sponsorship, or businesses making open source software.

Anthropomorphic animals have been a staple since Disney and freaking Aesop! 600BCE. People labeling it all the same as people who have a fursona are really weird.

It seems like this is what the bigots and outrage enthusiasts have latched into since they've been thoroughly shunned for hating other demographics (trans people most recently). It seems like it's getting more posts recently.

Mothra ,
@Mothra@mander.xyz avatar

That’s exactly how it is. Bullying LGBTQ+ is shunned upon these days, so bigots are redirecting their hatred to the next thing on the list they don’t understand, furries

Squirrel ,
@Squirrel@thelemmy.club avatar

Eh, I guess, but it is a bit harder to understand. You mention LGBTQ+, so considering the sexual aspect of furries… sexualizing animals… yeah. As long as they’re not going to actual bestiality, I don’t really care. But no, I don’t understand.

Tl;dr: You’re probably right and I’m rambling.

Mothra ,
@Mothra@mander.xyz avatar

It’s not harder to understand, it just has had less media exposure which means it feels more alien to the majority out there. There is a lot of nuance in anthropomorphism, most of it isn’t even sexualised and doesn’t count as furry. But the masses have an aversion to nuance.

Imo it’s very similar to drag, furries have an alt ego that just happens to be an anthropomorphic animal, period.

Saying that liking any of these shows makes someone a furry is about as right as saying you must be queer or something if you liked watching Ms. Doubtfire. It’s clearly trolling.

InkstainTheBat OP ,

Hey, I want to clarify, I’m not looking to bully or harass the furry community or any of its members, I’m a furry myself, and I made this meme simply because I thought it was intresting how common anthropomorphic animals are in animation

Mothra ,
@Mothra@mander.xyz avatar

All good with you, also agree it’s interesting to see anthro characters getting more screen time lately. What disappoints me is the creeping tide of hate, one can’t bring up the topic without trolls starting a fire

Unfortunately is not that simple, now Google is pushing a new standard web environment called WEI and all browsers will be affected with it. Is not just a matter of free choice.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

We’ll see if sites really start forcing this standard, could just turn into a situation where you use Chrome as an app to access specific sites that force it and Firefox for everything else.

chemicalwonka ,
@chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The late stage of capitalism will force sites to adopt the WEI. Trust me. Privacy will be a luxury good in near future.

Zetta ,

The FOSS community is big enough that most things will have a non fucked foss counterpart if that happens. Of course hopefully that doesn’t need to happen

chemicalwonka , (edited )
@chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Maybe a new form to navigate the web will emerge from the FOSS community. I really hope all of us join this to support the new web that we need to make to fight back the big tech greed. Some through code expertise and others through money donates to support the projects that we love. But I don’t want to be much idealistic about the future. I’ m just dreaming high

quat ,

The Gopher renaissance era perhaps?

wewbull ,

Foss needs to break compatibility with WEI clients in the web servers. Yes, big companies will work around it, but it would do two things.

  1. Be enough of a pain for people to notice the web had split.
  2. Send a loud message that embrace and extend is not acceptable.
yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

At that point we might see a split between corporate and open internet.

chemicalwonka ,
@chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

If and only “if” this split occur. Unfortunately only few tech conscious people about the importance of free internet as a whole and privacy will adhere to it. Will not be a big movement to harm the core of the big tech.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

My perspective on this is that it’s about sustainability as opposed to trying to compete with big tech in a zero sum game. For example, Mastodon or Lemmy aren’t able to compete with commercial platforms in terms of users, but that doesn’t mean they’re not viable communities. I can see a future where there’s a niche open internet that exists independently of the commercial one and I think that would be fine. As long as there are enough people to do development on platforms and browsers and to produce content, that’s all that really matters. In fact, a split might even be better because then we wouldn’t have companies interfering with how the network operates.

wewbull ,

There is no split if chrome works on everything and Firefox works on half of stuff.

Firefox just gets labelled as broken.

SyJ ,

Banks will force it pretty quickly. I can’t bank on a rooted android already.
