EnderMB , to linuxmemes in Have you tried NixOS?

I tried it, and while I was really excited about its proposition, it felt like at times any prior knowledge of Linux was a bit wasted. I also had some significant problems with needing to pin packages.

I don’t doubt that it’s a great option for many, if you’ve got the time to learn it. I’m finding myself in the position where I stick my flag to one distro and keep it there for as long as it doesn’t piss me off.

nickwitha_k ,

Yeah. I had a similar experience. My first successful install, following the docs, didn’t have a network stack. It turns out that the docs are not representative of what’s considered best practices at this point. I also don’t care for needing a new DSL for a single use case.

So, for me, it’s a non-starter. Fedora Atomic is meeting my needs nicely at this point. NixOS has brought some excellent ideas to the forefront and is a great match for some people. I’ll pass until I can use my JSON/YAML/TOML and the docs are useable.

hperrin , to nostupidquestions in Why are stories that take place in another world where everyone is white and Asian are normal, but it's "woke" if they are all black?

Because (among the political right) woke is just a coded term racists use for things they don’t like.

ggtdbz , to datahoarder in Mirroring YouTube videos

One thing this recent ad injection debacle has me worried about is that I’ll open an archived download of a YouTube video and find ads in my files. I have hesitated to continue my personal archival project until I could be 100% sure my downloads are clean, because I can’t go through everything to make sure they didn’t inject a 5 second ad somewhere.

Tyoda ,

I guess if you get the length with yt-dlp, and then compare with the downloaded file, and the length is within a one second tolerance, it should be fine. At least I would think the length that yt-dlp extracts would not include the baked in ad, but of course youtube could make it so.

Btw I haven’t heard about this thing since it first came out. Is it really happening?

Sprokes OP ,

Yes it happening but it is in the experiment phase so few users are seeing that.

Liberté, égalité, electrolyte

NIB ,

“Liberte” and “egalite” are latin words. “Electrolyte” is greek.

Mixing greek and latin is an abomination and we should put a stop to it. Say no to those mixed greek+latin words, it is an affront to God.

boonhet , to asklemmy in What would you do with a bitcoin windfall?

You’re on track for early retirement. You’re likely well-disciplined.

Take this windfall, or at least some part of it, for something to enjoy. A holiday, a reasonable new vehicle if you drive (I.e not a luxury car of course), or maybe home improvements. Hell, make it a classic car that appreciates in value and only drive it on the weekends in the summer.

You can’t take your money to the grave with you and none of us truly knows if we’ll even make it to retirement. It’s great that you’re disciplined financially, but you should also enjoy life while you’re still young.

OR throw it all into whatever you’re currently investing in, and retire a year or 2 earlier. Idk.

mrfriki , to pcgaming in Which game made you realize PC was superior platform to Console (or/and viceversa)?

Warframe. Played once on PS4 for a couple hours and thought, meh. Played it on PC and poured 800 hours into it. Mouse, keyboard and high refresh rate make a night and day difference in action games or any game that requires camera movement. And that something consoles will never have no matter how much they improve.
