atro_city , to asklemmy in What is an event that altered you in some way?

I was in a sport team for a while and they hadn't been treating me well for a while. One day, I slipped and fell during training. Instead of somebody helping me up, the majority of the team laughed at me. Something in my mind snapped that day and it nearly led to my first ever physical altercation. However, my punch just turned into a feint with the thought "fuck this, I'm out".

That was the day I learned not to let things boil until they explode. Put me into any salad and I'm not the calmest cucumber, but I have never let things get that close again and always speak up or just straight up leave before getting too heated. Life's just too short to stay in a bad situation you can get out of.

cashmaggot OP ,

I once learned that there's seemingly two types of people in this world. People who laugh at other's pain, and people who see someone's hurt and go to them. The cruelest dips I've ever met are the laughers. The biggest hearts, of course the helpers. I have tried to make sense of it. Like...well laughing is how we handle things that challenge us so that it makes us feel better. But I really think maybe it really boils down to this. And I am sorry people literally took your happiness away from something you loved. Fuck bullies! You speak that truth there though, life is too short for that bs.

The_Che_Banana ,

Some of us are actively working on ourselves every day, and understanding what makes you tick and how you got there is a big part of it.

Unfortunately I have a carrer that promotes derision, fortunately I’ve had a partner for 25 years helping me get my empathy back.

cashmaggot OP ,

As long as you know your way home, you'll be alright. People rag on love, because it's seen as this cheesy thing. You know? But really, there's something magical about a partner who can heal your soul. That's good stuff, and I'm glad you've got someone who does that for you. Cheers!

gccalvin , to games in Do you prefer RTS or Turn based tactics

For those that want an RTS game that doesn’t require a high APM, I’d recommend Supreme Commander Forged Alliance (FAF) and the Sins of a Solar Empire Games (which requires an even lower APM).

skibidi ,

FAF absolutely benefits from action spam, to the point where it breaks the game balance.

T1 assault bots lose to T1 tanks, and they are supposed to because they are half the price and much quicker to build. You can dance them around if you click enough and they will dodge the tank shells… a few micro’d bots can then defeat 10s of tanks. That swing in mass efficiency is already enough to decide the game on maps smaller than 20km.

RTS will always benefit from intensive micro because time is another resource. Doing more actions, assuming they are of positivity utility, gives an advantage over an opponent who does not.

pelletbucket , to mildlyinfuriating in I need new glasses. The only insurance-approved place I can shop online will cost $250 with my needs. I went to a "cheap" glasses website that doesn't accept insurance: $250. Yay, America.

eyebuydirect. I got my first pair from them for $11, shipped, just to test if they could get my weird prescription right. if you want all the bells and whistles, you can get one up to about 150, but I basically got a dozen pairs for what Target wanted for a single pair.

Firebirdie713 , to mildlyinfuriating in Stop making short men feel miserable at clubs!

As a short dude (5’ 0"), you give short dudes a bad name.

You assume you know everything about everyone, you treat people like walking stereotypes instead of treating them like actual individuals, and you refuse to even consider that people are avoiding you for your personality instead of your height. All the while, you are blaming women for a problem that, even if it did exist as much as you insist, would largely be perpetuated by the men who run the clubs, not the women who can get in for free and usually just want to be left alone so they can dance with their friends.

Are there a lot of areas where we face actual discrimination because we fall outside standard height considerations? Sure, I can think of several. None of them have to do with whether I get into a club. And you don’t make your case by using discriminatory language and being a misogynistic ass.

I can guarantee you that your attitude is hindering your social life far more than your height. There are plenty of women who love short men, but so many of them end up needing to constantly worry about their man’s ego that they don’t think it is worth it.

In other words: men like you, no matter the height, are the reason women choose the bear. Grow up, solve your own insecurities, and stop assuming that you know what is going through people’s minds every minute of the day.

ArmokGoB ,

Architecture is an artistic medium, so it’s subject to copyright. It gets a little complicated though, because this wasn’t legally decided until the latter half of the 20th century.

Johanno ,

While architecture could be copyrighted. Public buildings are excluded from that for obvious reasons. This includes the eifel tower.

ArmokGoB ,
Gork ,

Does the architect hold the copyright of a photograph that a photographer has taken though?

I can see it getting murky quickly. What if the building is in frame, but is not the focus of the photograph. Can the architect still claim copyright infringement on that particular photo?

Capricorn_Geriatric ,

The Eiffel Tower in the meme is as illegal as the Rattaouile frame since if the photo is from a broadcast the royalties have already been dealt with.

LastoftheDinosaurs , to programming in LLMs as interactive rubber ducks (or Q&A trainers)
@LastoftheDinosaurs@reddthat.com avatar

That’s exactly how I’ve been using it all along. I didn’t know it had a name, but I opened a previous conversation and simply asked, 'Review our conversation. Is this rubber duck debugging?

Got this:

Yes, this conversation does align with the concept of “rubber duck debugging,” which is a method where a developer explains their code or problems to an inanimate object, such as a rubber duck, in order to clarify their thinking and uncover solutions.

Key Aspects of Rubber Duck Debugging in Our Conversation:

  1. Explaining the Problem: You’ve been explaining issues and errors in your code step-by-step, as well as discussing the structure and organization of your files and directories.
  2. Step-by-Step Problem Solving: We went through the process of debugging various issues, such as errors related to missing modules, routing problems, and configuration issues.
  3. Clarifying Thought Process: The conversation involved clarifying certain technical aspects, which mirrors how a developer might talk through their code to better understand it themselves.
  4. Iterative Troubleshooting: We’ve repeatedly revisited issues and refined our approach, which is characteristic of how rubber duck debugging helps to identify the root cause of a problem.

While the term “rubber duck debugging” typically involves explaining the code to an inanimate object, in this case, you’ve been using me as a “virtual rubber duck” to guide you through the process and help identify errors. This technique is often helpful for developers to slow down, think critically, and uncover solutions they might not have seen otherwise.
