@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

it hasn’t been said publicly if the conversion of that series into a single film was completed before the strike began in May

It’s very unlikely that it was - when they announced that “Section 31” will be a movie instead of a series, they also announced a new writer, Craig Sweeny. Unless he had a pretty big head start before the announcement, I doubt much work has been done.

non_feistel , (edited ) to linux in What is your go-to Linux distro and why?
@non_feistel@lemmy.world avatar

Fedora for me as it seems to work the best for my hardware, will be moving to Kinoite when I get the chance. i already am using distrobox and Flatpak in general. Tried NixOS (with Root on ZFS) but couldn’t get hp-wmi module to work on on it. I was having some problems with Opensuse Nvidia drivers (wakeup from suspend didn’t work sometimes). The one thing I miss on Fedora, that Opensuse has is Full-Disk Encryption.

Fedora is best for almost anything tbh… I always love… Fedora… I don’t know, probably I being too fanatics into it :)

EdgeRouter is proprietary but minimal. You can also look at Opnsense running on a used thin client off ebay.

stanleytweedle , to startrek in How the strikes will impact our favorite shows (and even conventions)

I was a little sad when I heard the second season of Severance would be delayed due to the strike, but I’m 100% onboard with the WGA so I’ve got no problem waiting until they get a fair deal.

Steve , to nostupidquestions in From a legal/evidence perspective, what is going to happen when it will become impossible to tell the difference between a video generated by AI versus the real thing?
@Steve@compuverse.uk avatar

I’m not sure it’ll change much. We already know confessions, lineups, and nearly all “forensic sciences” are unreliable at best; frequently outright false. But they’re all still used, and wrongfully ruin peoples lives.

All they need is an “expert” to testify that, “by their judgment” a video is real.

thepianistfroggollum ,

I just want to take this opportunity to state that police drug dogs have a nearly 80% false positive rate.

OddFed , to linux in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?
@OddFed@feddit.de avatar

I’m honestly very confused by OSM. I always wanted to use it as an alternative to Google Maps, but it’s so hard to use.

Anyone got some tips or good ressources to share?

teolan ,
@teolan@lemmy.world avatar

The OpenStreetMap website isn’t really menant for general consumption. It’s more menant as a databse that other services can build upon.

For Android I recommend the excellent OrganicMaps, but you can also use Magic Earth (proprietary). Both are built on top of OSM data.

OddFed ,
@OddFed@feddit.de avatar

Nice, Organic Map is awesome. Do you also know a webapp similar to Google Maps?

teolan ,
@teolan@lemmy.world avatar

There’s qwant maps which is proprietary

Showroom7561 ,

What is your main objective for using OSM?

Is it for navigation? Bike routes? Route planning? There are so many services/apps/websites that use OSM data that you can really get as specific as your use-case needs!

If you just need a basic navigation solution for your smartphone, Organic Maps (uses OSM data) or (OSMand+) on Android are good options.

Showroom7561 ,

My go-to website for route creation (bike, car, or otherwise) is brouter.de/brouter-web/ It’s got a lot of options, but it’s far more powerful than Gmaps.

booklovero ,

For which purpose? As feature rich as gmaps? Nope.

nothacking , to nostupidquestions in From a legal/evidence perspective, what is going to happen when it will become impossible to tell the difference between a video generated by AI versus the real thing?

It has always been possible to fake a video or photo, or to lie when testifying. The solution will be the same as always: presenting multiple forms of evidence, investigating people suspected of lying, and having a high standard of proof for criminal cases. AI might mean an increase in faked videos and photos, but nothing that can’t be done already.

BowserBasher , to nostupidquestions in Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

As with a few others I only really use it when I’m using the phone one handed. If I’m eating and want to reply. Otherwise two thumbs tapping away is quicker for me.

Xebrafish , to nostupidquestions in Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

Yes, 100%, I use an iPhone 13 mini and iOS’s one-handed swipe keyboard (right handed swiping on right side singlehand keyboard mode) is my default way of messaging. It goes very fast and detects language changes very accurately as well!

OmgItBurns , to technology in Advice for someone going into tech.
  1. It all depends on where you want to go. I used to work in an IT department where most of my coworkers had non-tech degrees. Heck I only have a 2 year degree in software development. I also know people with computer science degrees that can’t find jobs in the field. There really isn’t a best path here. Heck, a lot of folks in low level IT support roles are just people without much training, but an interest in computers.
  2. It all depends on you. If you aren’t sure about something, maybe watch a few videos on a platform like PluralSight or Lynda.com. There are often labs or projects for you to start getting your hands dirty. Depending on where you live there might be places like FreeGeek that take volunteers to do support work, which in and of itself could get you a foot in the door of the tech industry. There are also a number of games on Steam that give you a rough idea of the work that each field entails.
  3. Again, it depends on you. At this point in my life I’d avoid working for a FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google) style company or a start-up. However, that’s not because there is anything inherently wrong with working for those types of companies, I just value my time outside of work.

The most important advice I can give is to try to meet people in the field. Locally you will likely have events called User Groups (you can look on Facebook or Meetup.com) where people who are interested in different technologies will share what they know. Get to know people. Ask questions even if you think they’re obvious or dumb. Tech skills will help you keep a job, soft skills will help you get a job.

habanhero , to nostupidquestions in From a legal/evidence perspective, what is going to happen when it will become impossible to tell the difference between a video generated by AI versus the real thing?

AI / Deepfake forensics will become a growing field.

radix ,
@radix@lemm.ee avatar

How could any forensics be performed to discern AI from non-AI? Would it be no more than counting the fingers?

habanhero ,

That’s one way AI-generated image leaves artifacts and clues. It could even be traces that cannot be seen by human eyes. There will be other signals and it will probably be arms race where forensics will improve, but AI will get even better, so on and so forth. Time will tell.
