Kangie , to selfhosted in If you build containers, you should be looking into Docker Slim

The better solution is to build containers without all of that bloat in the first place. I did up a post on that subject a little while ago.

Agree!

lebigz ,

You link to lemmy.srcfiles.zip/post/3841 which does not seem to have anything to do with containers, but is about townscaping

Kangie , (edited )

I was wrong on the internet; apparently with certain Lemmy apps this directs to a completely different website.

What crack are you smoking? It’s literally a post about “building lightweight hardened containers”?

Edit: wtf is townscaping? Is that like manscaping for a whole town? Or is it just regular landscaping.

lebigz ,

Suuuper weird, when I click the link from the browser, I get to the correct page, but not in the Connect App. Then it’s some blog about old houses and nice places in towns

Kangie ,

Ok, that is weird and I retract my criticism. Just because I don’t see it doesn’t mean something unusual isn’t happening there!

Laticauda , to nostupidquestions in Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

I don’t, but I also tend to talk about stuff that tends to involve a lot of atypical names or words or slang that gets autocorrected to something wrong a lot when I use swipe, and I can’t be arse to figure out how to get it to work for that stuff, so I just stick to typing it out most of the time. It just feels more natural for me.

I have a feeling you’d end up with a bunch of big drives with small volumes on them if it did work.

Warning you, I’ve had issues with RAID combining SSD and HDD. Basically I was on an older dell server and I wanted to do mirroring and the bios straight up refused to do it because it didn’t want to mix ssds and hdds.

Anonymouse OP ,

I suspect I’ll have an issue after reading many of the comments. This is also an older Dell server. My only real advantage is that it’s currently hosting 2 VMs and one is just a test server, so I don’t mind losing the data.

SJ_Zero ,

Imaging software is a godsend for that sort of thing. I ended up using BartPE for something like that, and it worked great – it has a free imaging program on it. You only need a removable drive large enough for all your files since it’ll compress everything.

enoent , to linux in Why is snaps hated

This threads got lots of good answers, but I haven’t seen it mentioned that snaps sometimes mean reduced functionality.

Use the docker snap? Sorry, it can only access your home directory so no -v /some/path:/somewhere for you

Use firefox or chromium and keepassxc? Sorry, your browser plugin won’t be able to talk to your password manager

And the updates… dear god. In whose mind was it a good idea to show a “firefox is updating, exit now to avoid issues” TWO WEEKS im advance. Closing the app does precisely fuck all unless you manually snap refresh it

Containerised applications are a fine idea, but snap is a horrible implementation of it

VerbTheNoun95 ,

Didn’t know that about the docker snap but that is insane. It would be straight up unusable at work for me.

I tried to get microk8s up and running by installing it from a snap since I figured it would be a nice and easy way to get up and running quickly.

I’ve spent so much time trying to get it working that I haven’t even started to learn k8s yet since I can’t get the damn thing to run.

I think I’m switching to Debian for my servers.

inso ,

Wtf I’ve installed microk8s dozens of times it just works ?!

To be fair, those are both issues with flatpak too. You can change the file system permissions with a command or flatseal, but I don’t know of a fix for the password extension issue.

Infiltrated_ad8271 ,
@Infiltrated_ad8271@kbin.social avatar

In general the integration of flatpak is quite good (even more if we compare it with snap), but there are still some gaps. In this case there are some solutions like this one.

Using it to separate work from other uses makes sense to me - I think if I worked from my desktop rather than the company laptop, I’d be more inclined to use the virtual desktops.

gazby , to piracy in About to buy my first private tracker invite from a forum, any suggestions?

Most trackers have rules explicitly forbidding this practice. If they’re found out (and they will be, it’s not hard to identify if it’s done more than once) you will be banned along with them and the rest of their invite tree. Sorry mate.

Ender2k , to linux in Workspaces / Virtual Desktops – do you use them on your laptop, desktop, or both?

I'm exactly the opposite. I use use virtual desktops when I have my MBP docked to multiple screens--and when I am just using the laptop, I don't. I have gestures enabled on my Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad--so the gestures are there whether I'm using the laptop or docked--but I just don't use them when I have the single monitor...

Ghostbusterinthemach , to selfhosted in Hot RAID swapping?

The answer to this is going to depend on your raid controller. Frequently the answer is yes, but some raid controllers are more particular about exactly what drives are in the array. Software raid controllers are typically more forgiving of this type of change.
