hfdh , to linux in Long time Linux user feeling burnt out

It depends on why you are using FOSS now?

For me its a principle choice of freedom and privacy since 1998, so I cope with the downsites on the desktop as much I can.

squarewagon OP ,

That is exactly why I choose to use FOSS including Linux. As much as I want to standby this principle, I have come to a breaking point after dealing with its issues, issues we have all experienced. I believe it is hands down the best choice for server use, but for work and productivity, I need something more matured that is going to work out of the box. I am glad that the community here took this criticism well but I think it’s important to discuss and understand that there are still some strides to be made. But at the end of the day, I’m just some guy ranting and who knows, maybe I’ll be installing a Linux distro after a month of using Mac OS.

hfdh ,

This summer I use Linux on my desktop for 25 years. What do you think the first years looked like? My first laptop took me 3 weeks to get it properly installed with Suse back in 1998. For the last 10 years installing and configuring whatever distro is a piece of cake. Ofcourse soms things are not as you want them to be: the good thing is you can change everything in FOSS, and if it does not excist you can create it. People complaining at Linux Desktop are realy complaining on their own limitations. Don’t complain! Not about yourself. Not about the Linux Desktop. Never ever give up! Make your list of whats not working for you. And than work and change until your list is history. Keep your head up strong. You’ll never walk alone!

Same story, same tips, but I started with SuSE Linux 4.3 in 1996. Just try stuff, read the error messages, read docs and ask. A lot of peaople who know stuff are happy to help out of altruism or the chance to show off. ;-)

Spyd3r , to youshouldknow in YSK: A car takes uses about seven seconds worth of fuel to start up. If you are going to idle for a period of time longer than that, you'll save fuel by turning your engine off.
@Spyd3r@lemmy.world avatar

Starting and stopping a car is the worst thing you can do to it, doing it repeatedly on purpose is just asking for expensive problems, like a burnt out starter, missing or worn teeth off the flywheel, broken stater mount on the block, dead batteries, coked up and worn out turbo bearings, bearing and knock issues due to lack of lubrication, soot buildup in diesel engines, failed emissions systems, etc.

The few pennies you save in fuel is not worth it, upping the time to 5 minutes would make more sense.

infogic ,
@infogic@lemmy.world avatar

In some cities in my country (maybe all) it is regulated and fined to idle your car over 1 min, the point of it I think is to make people used to turning off their cars for train crossings and bridge openings.

Yep, people are enthusiastic about self hosting and like talking about what they host :)

And talk about it on a self-hostable platform, no less.

syntaxseed , to startrek in I think Voyager is underrated
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@catshit_dogfart Voyager was my main Trek when I was younger and will always be my favourite. Janeway was awesome, and it's location in the Delta quadrant, far from Starfleet, made for some unique story opportunities.

When Seven was introduced, I was already bitter about the move Sliders made to remove a beloved character and bring on a hot woman, so I was really upset that Voyager did the same. But grew to love the character over time.

Voyager was fantastic & made me a Trek fan.

GoatTnder ,
@GoatTnder@startrek.website avatar

I’m still really sad that Kes was written off. Got no problem with Seven, but Kes was a good character on her own.

But, Neelix was pretty crap until Kes was removed from the show. Without her to be constantly jealous of, Neelix finally started to be useful and interesting.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

I agree 100%, his spat with Tom was annoying, I liked him better once she was out of the picture.

Shut_up_Wesley ,

I think the character of Kes was very poorly written. It limited the acting range of Jennifer Lien, which is only really given a chance to shine in the episode Warlord.

kresten , to selfhosted in What are YOU self-hosting?

I plan on getting a server this summer (building it myself), and the things I have planned this far:

  • bitwarden
  • monica
  • minecraft
  • factorio
  • email server
  • maybe pihole
  • maybe lemmy
  • jellyfin

Edit: forgot jellyfin

ron3ats ,

Wait wait wait. A Bitwarden server? Please elaborate on what this is and the benefits of it? I use Bitwarden for everything and if there’s a more secure route, sign me up!

nexusband ,
@nexusband@lemmy.world avatar

Most of the time it’s called “Vaultwarden” and since Bitwarden is OpenSource, it’s basically the same. Except that selfe hosted you do not have access to the haveibeenpawned API for your yearly subscription. Which is why my personal Vaulwarden is “only” a backup.

ron3ats ,

Hm if that’s what it’s for I may just stick to my subscription. Usually I go a self hosted route when I don’t want to pay for things, but in this instance I feel it may be worth it.

Not wanting to be purposefully controversial, but language is a tool for communication and as long as it’s understood by the target audience, then I’d say it was used effectively.

The English language doesn’t have a governing body (unlike say French and Spanish) and so whatever we agree on is correct usage. “Grammatically incorrect” has long been a dog-whistle signifier for elitism (you don’t have the expensive education to know what’s correct) and racism (the local dialect that you speak isn’t our ‘prestige’ version, therefore you are inferior) and I don’t really like to see it. Even when those aren’t your intentions when correcting people, it still rankles with me.

Not that I’d write ‘should of’ on my CV or anything, but it doesn’t offend me any on an internet forum.

ronaldtemp1 OP ,

Thanks for the info about French and Spanish governing bodies. TIL

Confuzzeled ,

What I’m hearing is we need to set up some kind of formal governing body to properly enforce the grammar rules of English. Maybe Hugo boss could make some uniforms.

Exitlude ,

It doesn’t necessarily have to invoke that kind of imagery. Spanish has the Royal Spanish Academy and within my lifetime they have removed a couple of letters from the alphabet (ch, ll).

Confuzzeled ,

Ah I was just being glib to try and be humorous. Alas my “sense of humour” rarely gets the response looked for. I will keep working on it.

RedundantObsession ,

I slightly changed my breathing pattern after reading your comment, if that helps. Not full nose-blow-funny, but you caused a small, positive reaction. Keep it up!

Understanding written text is more difficult when the existing established conventions that impart meaning are ignored.

Sure, those conventions evolve over time, some errors are worse than others, and no one’s going to write perfectly all the time. But that doesn’t mean anything goes and the writer has no responsibility to write clearly and correctly.

xx3rawr ,

True. Just because “language is descriptive” (descriptivist will always let you know) doesn’t mean everyone can go freestyle with language, carelessly introducing ambiguity and miscommunication. They always say “as long as it gets the point across” but as a non-native but still pretty fluent, most of the time they don’t actually get the point across.

RagingSnarkasm ,

Wait, my 6th grade English teacher was a racist? That explains a lot.

henry_rowengartner , to youshouldknow in YSK: A car takes uses about seven seconds worth of fuel to start up. If you are going to idle for a period of time longer than that, you'll save fuel by turning your engine off.
@henry_rowengartner@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah new cars usually have the ability to do that themselves and also usually do it when safe.

They auto start when power is needed or if the situation changes. Eg: touch the steering or gas pedal. Another example is my car will auto start it too many cars are around me.

Shutting your non-auto starting car off and then having an emergency happen could land your ass in trouble with insurance and the law. If you’re on the road, your car should be running (unless it was designed this way). Of course people mentioned wear and tear, so that too.

Cheers -Henry

jacktherippah , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

In no particular order

  • File management works like a charm
  • USB-C and fast charging
  • Customizations
  • Custom ROMs
  • Privacy (getting a Pixel soon for GrapheneOS)
  • Easier to repair
  • More efficient (takes less steps to do stuff)
  • Looks better
  • Sideloading
  • More choices for phones
Purrington ,

Sideloading is the big one. I was considering an iPad before getting Xiaomi tablet (even though it costs roughly the same), but sideloading is game changer.

  • YouTube Vanced
  • Emulators
  • Stremio and torrents

GiuEliNo , to gaming in What are peoples thoughts on games requiring always online? How does it affect your enjoyment of those games?
@GiuEliNo@feddit.it avatar

I hate it I try to always avoid always online drm but sometimes it’s really impossible, i’m gonna be honest and say that i got some issue with my steamdeck for them. (f u ubisoft btw) So if i find that a singleplayer game needs an always online drm i just don’t buy it.

loops ,

Same. I really loved the first two Diablos, but I wouldn’t touch the new one because of it. I’ll just wait a decade or so and emulate it.

TemperateFox , to selfhosted in is it better to use subdomains or paths?

Everyone is saying subdomains so I’ll try to give a reason for paths. Using subdomains makes local access a bit harder. With paths you can use 192etc/example, but if you use subdomains, how do you connect internally with https? example.192etc won’t work as you can’t mix an ip address with domain resolution. You’ll have to use 192etc:port. So no httpS for internal access. I got around this by hosting adguard as a local DNS and added an override so that my domain resolved to the local IP. But this won’t work if you’re connected to a VPN as it’ll capture your DNS requests, if you use paths you could exclude the IP from the VPN.

Edit: not sure what you mean by “more setup”, you should be using a reverse proxy either way.

tkohhh ,
@tkohhh@waveform.social avatar

If your router has NAT reflection, then the problem you describe is non existent. I use the same domain/protocol both inside and outside my network.

Obligatory PSA: ProtonMail isn’t any more secure than Gmail and is likely a honeypot scheme crafted by government agencies: encryp.ch/…/disturbing-facts-about-protonmail/

I know the title of that sounds clickbaity, but they cite their sources. It’s worth the read for those curious about ProtonMail’s history and their CEOs.

linearchaos ,

Tbh, that document reads like a discovery channel 2am aliens documentary, but it’s not completely without merit.

There are a couple line items about software services they’re using that are shitty that sound pretty legit. The fact that they’re operating in locations where they might have to hand over data sounds pretty legit. Their warrant compliance and logging/handing over a person’s IP address is legit.

The CIA honeypot stuff is all really circumstantial. If the CIA was in as deep as is claimed, a lot of the real evidence people are turning up that they’re not a secure as they could be would be unnecessary.

My best guess is they decided to make an email company based in Switzerland with the schtick that they’re secure (banks amirite?) They’re doing what they can to appear secure without spending too much money. They’re not going to have legal battles to keep your data private, and they are going to comply with agencies request for data. Even if they support end-to-end encryption if they are required by an agency to turn that encryption off for you, they’re going to do it.

They’re probably less likely than Google or Microsoft to sell all of your data to the highest bidder, but realistically there’s no such thing as secure email.
