first day of apollo being dead, finding myself sadder than i thought i would be. i knew it was going to shutdown but i guess it didn't feel properly real until it just stopped working

Zerimski ,

Relay was my app of choice, but other than that this is bang on for me.

The app is still working for me at the moment but I've managed to ween myself off over the last couple of weeks.

Never posted in CasualUK but it was the sub I'd always retreat to. There was a palpable sense of relief when I found this place.

fne8w2ah , to android in Jerboa currently unusable for other people?

Didn’t work for me cos it only supports version 0.17.4 or smth whereas lemmy.world requires version 0.18 and above.

LunchEnjoyer ,
@LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

Same here, but it will be fixed/changed eventually. Read a long post about it, and it seemed a tad complicated.

HolyDriver ,

Even if the difference in version is complicated, it’s really bad design to crash an app. Why not catch the error and display something reasonable?

krigo666 ,

You got it reversed, lemmy.world is at 0.17.4 and Jerboa is already at 0.18.0. No logins are possible, and if already logged in it works with some crashes.

There’s a bug on 0.18.0 that causes problems for some features of lemmy.world, they’re trying to update the instance to 0.18.1.

squid010 , to nostupidquestions in What was so special about the Apollo app?

Apollo was made by someone who used to intern at Apple and it had that feel, imo. It was intuitive, thought-out, and functioned flawlessly. I know you’re an Android person, but take all the positive buzzwords around the Apple product philosophy and apply it to a Reddit app.

The big things and the little things. Lots of gestures - hold on a comment and drag it up and it’ll upvote, hold and drag down, downvote.

You could even have it display the current weather at the top when you were in a location-specific sub.

Apollo felt more like a built in iOS app than some of the actual built in apps

Crashing for me. Switched to Connect. Works well... except you can't pinch zoom images, which is a huge problem...

SmallAlmond , to showerthoughts in Lemmy communities need a distinct one word name for communities like how reddit has "subreddits"

The problem lies in the federative aspect of it.

Calling the communities “sublemmies” for example, would mean that people on kbin have to call it like that too. And afaik they are called in a general way for the fediverse, just like how mastodon changed toot to post.

Does this make the platforms less unique? Yes, absolutely, but I don’t think there is a fix for it.

_pete_ , to ukcasual in Saturday chat thread

Fêtes!

We had the school one yesterday and are going to the local town one today, hopefully the weather holds out and the things that are there aren’t shit 🤞

harmlessmushroom ,

Delightful! I might have to pop into town and see if anything is on. I think there might be a book faire today

illbit , to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

Pretty awesome to be part of something new and growing.

Laete ,

It feels somehow nostalgic and exciting. Makes it lot easier to forget Reddit.

Now that you mention it, I have recently started occasionally getting next door’s post through my letterbox although I’m pretty sure I have the same postwoman as before!

Ollie ,

I’ve noticed they’ve started using gig workers as well as the regular posties. Understandably the gig workers give less of a shit.

I definitely used to feel somewhat comforted when I knew a package I’d ordered online was being delivered by RM, cos I could usually trust that it would be on time and in one piece. The last, I don’t know, five or six things I’ve ordered that have been delivered by RM have been delivered literally up to a week later than the timeline. Gimme DPD or DHL anyday.

scarabic , to showerthoughts in Lemmy communities need a distinct one word name for communities like how reddit has "subreddits"

It could be something unbranded, like “communities,” as long as it was consistently used by all. But to have some call it topics, some call it communities, and some call it channels just gets confusing. I’m not even going to comment on “magazines.”

illi ,
@illi@lemmy.world avatar

I mean… communities is the official term, makes sense to use it. No idea where the others come from - except magazines, that is a kbin thing.

neblem , to youshouldknow in YSK: how to painlessly migrate you and us from reddit

For read only reddit use teddit (old.reddit style) or libreddit (new reddit style). They proxy instead of use the API so both still work but you can’t log in. sub.rehab has a good listing of reddit to lemmy equivalents.

Olabanderou , to lemmyshitpost in the API changes occur tomorrow, gentlemen, it's been an honor (inb4 Lemmy completely crashes)

Rest in peace beautiful RIF 😥 10+ years went by quickly! Time for new adventures now with both old and hopefully new family at Lemmy!

HalfJack ,

11 years with reddit and RIF for me! I’m actually feeling a little rejuvenated being free from it and trying something new.

Olabanderou ,

Yeah, I can understand that feeling 😊 Having a bit of a giddy feeling in a good way myself 😁

FKLinguista , to lemmyshitpost in So tomorrow, right?

Thanks for the reminder. Just deleted my Reddit account now. :D

Have tried Thunder, Jerboa, Liftoff. I’m finding the web app wefwef.app better though, since it’s based on Apollo and has a really nice UI/UX.
