It’s a duplex so the HOA only has two homes in it. The fees were designed to cover the water bill, master insurance policy, and slowly collect enough money to replace the roof every decade or two.
Unfortunately the other unit has no interest in even basic maintenance so unless we take care of everything the place slowly just falls apart. We’ve had to fight with them over every tiny repair from siding damage to a literal hole in the roof that a squirrel chewed out. They keep running an Airbnb with loud guests who throw parties despite it being against the HOA and unless we pay for our own lawyer there’s no way to actually enact the fines and stuff as laid out in the HOA rules.
We’re selling and never buying in a small HOA ever again
I set up Bunsenlabs on both of my elderly parents computers and then basically automated login stuff to the sites they use, pinned those tabs. Blocked all ads and trackers. Set Firefox to auto open on boot. Basically made them a Linux version of a chrome book where everything they need is in the browser and already active, no mudding around.
8 months later zero complaints from either of them.
First we need a better system for resource allocation. Monetary systems are extremely inefficient, but it is far better than the “trust me, bro” approach of many of the alternatives.
A global post-scarcity society could in theory take over, similar to how it works in Star Trek, but there are a lot of other hurdles that need to be overcome first.
As long as proper distribution of resources requires an effort, it will also need an incentive to do so. Currently this is provided by having a profit margin, and while this does also provide a mechanism for skimming off the top, at least said skimming can be somewhat controlled by a free market ensuring better circumstances for those willing to skim less.
A suitably large catapult would deliver the necessary delta-v, not release pollutants into the atmosphere, and would make a satisfying ‘sproing thump’ noise in doing so.
It‘s been a while but I remember when I played it way after its release I found it clunky and meh. I guess that‘s to be expected for an (when I played it already) old game. I want more martial arts games though. Especially kung fu games. I also want a new Sleeping Dogs…
