atrielienz , to games in Why did 3D Platformers die?

Indie game studios still make them. So does Nintendo. They didn’t die. It’s just AAA game studios turned their budget to making blockbuster level games with shit tonnes of micro transactions in order to make more money because unfortunately they make more money and are generally more popular.

flameguy21 OP ,

half the video is basically just “holy shit you people need to play more video games they’re not dead indie games are peak”

HubertManne , to asklemmy in Why do human beings feel the constant need to be validated for their actions/opinions/interests/etc.?

Validation for beliefs like all human beings are the same by asking a question where that is included as some kind of truth? That kind of validation? Is this question sarcastic?

hissingmeerkat , to science_memes in Balls

You’re not going to believe this but Ball made all of the mirror … except the mirror itself.

noli , to games in How to decide what kind of controller one should purchase?

I was debating buying an official Xbox controller with back buttons/paddles, but the price of the pro controller + quality issues were a turn off.

Ended up picking up a Flydigi Vader 3 pro and I’ve loved it, especially since I got it on sale up for <$50.

thesink05 ,

I recommend this one too. Has hall effect joysticks as well as tons of buttons. If you get ReWASD then you can do some crazy mapping.

LodeMike , to fediverse in Using messaging protocols (XMPP, Matrix, etc) for federated social media vs. ActivityPub?

Matrix is too hefty. XMPP is stateless sort of. ActivityPub just works.

matcha_addict OP ,

From my understanding developers often complain about activityPub. Can we really say that it “just works”? Federation and interop issues are common as well.

LodeMike ,

It works better than anything else.

matcha_addict OP ,

It may seem so due to its success, but I’d argue its success was more tied to luck and timing than technical superiority.

Mastodon was growing and “new” during the period of the decline of social media, and specifically during several moments of Twitter having issues with moderation, and later on acquisition by musk.

Similarly to lemmy, the Reddit third party API fiasco.

I don’t think this means that it works better than anything else. It was just the most obvious choice to users at the time.

rglullis ,

LodeMike ,

And?

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

And… that if “activitypub just works” , so does XMPP.

And… XMPP servers offer better performance and taking less resources than any of the leading AP projects.

And… XMPP already has E2EE.

LodeMike ,

And what do you do about other clients? What happens when the user wants to clear messages on the server when they’re fetched, but doesn’t want to do that for the social network rooms? What about moderation.

XMPP is good at a very specific thing and I don’t think its users would like all the necesary changes.

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

None of your questions are about the protocol, but implementation details of the application.

LodeMike ,

My point is that the protocol doesn’t work well for the use case.

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

And my point is that the your complaints are not related to the protocol, but the applications using it.

Not only that, we are talking about different layers of the OSI model. XMPP should be compared with HTTP, not ActivityPub. There is absolutely nothing stopping someone from implementing the ActivityStreams vocabulary on XMPP.

I smoke my cannabis with a pipe. I’ve discovered that grinding it and putting it in a travel bottle makes it easy to carry around and as a bonus, also easy to dispense it in my pipe’s bucket.

Red_October , to technology in Chat GPT appears to hallucinate or outright lie about everything

Yeah? That’s… how LLMs work. It doesn’t KNOW anything, it’s a glorified auto-fill. It knows what words look good after what’s already there, it doesn’t care whether anything it’s saying is correct, it doesn’t KNOW if it’s correct. It doesn’t know what correct even is. It isn’t made to lie or tell the truth, those concepts are completely unknown to it’s function.

LLMs like ChatGPT are explicitly and only good at composing replies that look good. They are Convincing. That’s it. It will confidently and convincingly make shit up.

flameguy21 OP , to games in Why did 3D Platformers die?

I’m stupid and don’t know how to use Lemmy. Here’s the video.

Aeryn , to games in How to decide what kind of controller one should purchase?

I game on PC every day, and I always use a controller. I’ve tried many different controllers over the years, and most of them have had issues right out of the box. Only one controller has been perfect. The razer wolverine v2.

https://www.razer.com/ca-en/console-controllers/razer-wolverine-v2

It is super well built, and has a nice heavy feel that feels great if your hands are slightly larger than average. The thumb sticks are very grippy, have uniform resistance in every direction so you can be super accurate, and have zero stick drift after years of intense gaming. The face buttons have a mouse click feel to them, which I love. I always hated the face buttons on other controllers, including the genuine Xbox Controller, because they felt mushy and have inconsistent press and release.

I’ve tried 8bitdo, they felt cheap and uncomfortable. I’ve tried the Xbox Elite Controller, but it had tons of quality issues. I haven’t tried Scuf, so I can’t comment on that. But this razer controller is by far the best. Once you’ve used these clicky face buttons, you’ll never want to go back to a normal controller.

I highly highly highly recommend it. The only downside is that it’s wired, but they have a more expensive version that is wireless.
