jake_jake_jake_ , to selfhosted in Power outage worries

make sure it’s configured for clean shut downs before your battery runs out, auto power up on restoration, and hope it doesn’t happen. you will eventually have an outage that outlasts your batteries.

I have a large string of batteries from an old telco office, that runs my rack for 14hrs (calculated, I shut everything down around this time) and that did not last for the 2-3 day outage we had after a storm. Without a generator, you will inevitably have an outage, but if you are prepared, then you can mitigate any damage. use NUT if you need to shutdown or power multiple devices from one monitored UPS

11111one11111 , to nostupidquestions in Why do boomers hate squirrels so much?

37y/o here. Fuck Squirrels, grey and red, as well as chipmunks. They’re all just different textured rats. Destroy shit to make nests, destroy shit to get at food or store food, disease spreading, fuckem all.

Anyone needs advice for bird feeders: 4x4 post in ground, thin walled metal rust resistant metal tubing covered in environment friendly lube. I’ve gone extreme with lard - looked like shit after a week, now I just buy vegetable oil spray and coat it. As long as there are no trees close enough for Squirrels to jump to the feeder you shouldn’t have an issue. Every post I put in gets a 4 way cross on top to hang 4 individual feeders from. I do this for any feeder that isn’t humming bird/oriole cuz they don’t seem to get fucked with.

Bro, install a custom kernel from the AUR and switch all your software to the git versions, just add -git at the end of each package. Do not use pacman, what are you? afraid of life?, use yay like everyone else.

olafurp , to nostupidquestions in Why do big corporations get to claim losses, but small businesses can't?

There is nothing preventing business from running without making a profit as long as they pay any expenses or bonds that are due.

The current tech setup depends on high stock valuations. They issue stock, sell it at a high rate and use that to pay expenses. The sale of stock does not count as net positive in revenue since they are effectively selling a part of their business to investors, making them “owe” their new shareholders equal the amount they gained from them.

As long as investors are interested and the business is growing it’s possible to keep this going for a long time and never pay taxes since they spent everything they gained.

If they are not able to pay their expenses they will have to file for bankruptcy like every other business, whether it’s restructuring bankruptcy, transfer of ownership of dissolution.

So why can’t small businesses do the same? They absolutely can, but the money they get from selling stock is nowhere close. These tech companies are sold sometimes at 20x the revenue where small businesses are likely going to get 20x profit or less.

Kecessa ,

And the same thing is true for private businesses, most of the time they’re only private in the sense that the “shares” aren’t listed on the stock market, there’s still a bunch of investors behind the scene that each own a certain % of the company, it’s not just the figurehead that acts like they’re the sole owner (see Twitter with Musk and the documents released recently showing how much money for the purchase came from third parties).

MonkderVierte ,

Oh, it starts already as cancer?

olafurp ,

I think most tech companies are over valued, not gonna lie. In a hypothetical situation where you know all future dividends of the company the value of the share should be the sum of the future dividends discounted by number of years at an interest rate. If the company is never going to pay out dividends then it’s “real value” is zero.

“Real value” as in it has no value as a commodity like gold or a collectors item. Looking at you Tesla.

oscardejarjayes , to linux in "Deploying" images rather than installing from the official ISO?
@oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net avatar

You could try using Hashicorp’s Packer to generate images repeatably (usually more meant for cloud images though). Or NixOS (like others have mention), or Guix (like NixOS, but better in some ways, worse in others). You could make it an Ansible playbook, which would let you both make configured images, and just configure machines that already have an OS.

I do something similar with archiso, fwiw, but that only works with Arch Linux.

Would you want to change your distribution, or just keep Debian with some tools to automate?

Lichtblitz ,

Ansible playbook is perfect for this. All your configuration is repeatable, whether on a running system or a new one. Plus you can start with a completely fresh newest version image and apply from there, instead of starting from a soon-to-be outdated custom image.

Best use I’ve had for them (data engineer here) is things that don’t have a specific answer. Need a cover letter? Perfect. Script for a presentation? Gets 95% of the work done. I never ask for information since it has no capability to retain a fact.

I guess for tactical shooters, Urban Terror might qualify?
