hitagi , to linuxmemes in Why Are You Staying On Windows 11?

I kind of like having Linux on a VM in Windows. I only use Linux for things like web browsing or writing papers which a VM can do. For gaming, I prefer Windows to avoid any problems I might encounter (like anticheats).

This gives me a near-ideal set up with access to both Linux and Windows. I just wish my Linux VM can do 120+hz and GPU passthrough.

Did you consider dual booting?

hitagi ,

Yeah but I think Linux VM is more convenient for me as I don’t have to switch back and forth between operating systems. I can have both operating systems in front of me at once.

I can keep the VM running while playing games with my friends on the Windows host.

leftzero , to nostupidquestions in Why are people downvoting the MediaBiasFactChecker bot?

It labels anything left of outright fascism as “left biased”.

It’s disinformation malware intended to shift the overton window even further right than it already is in the US.

And it’s spam.

otp OP ,

That’s the website, not the bot. I don’t think the website is malware…lol

I think the problem is that the website uses the American standard, where reality is anything left of center

leftzero , (edited )

Malware is ill intentioned software.

The bot is a bot, i.e., software.

It’s intended to drive the overton window right until fascism is perceived as mainstream, and probably beyond, either as a means of imposing fascism on society or to cause chaos and destabilisation, which is evidently ill intentioned in any case.

It’s ill intentioned software, i.e., malware.

It’s also pushing its ill intentioned disinformation onto the community’s users against our will, so it’s also spam, if being malware wasn’t enough.

(As for the website, it’s clearly a disinformation psy-op with the same ill intentions; whether a website counts enough as software to count as malware is open to debate, though, even if its ill intentions are not.)

Pika ,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I agree with your statement here, the person who is calling it malware is misusing the term.

In order for it to be classified as malware you need to prove that it’s intentionally being malicious, which from the provided evidence is unable to be done. in fact every step of evidence has been in the opposite direction, just because it gives potentially invalid information from its source doesn’t mean that the bot is malware, the intent is noble, regardless if the information is fully valid or not. You can call the website malware if you like(although that’s still a hard stretch) but the bot wouldn’t be malware, it’s working as intended and doing the job exactly as it described it would be,which is using the website to determine credibility of articles.

Made the switch this weekend :) From Win 11 to Mint 22. Haven’t run into any real issues really. I have the occasional screen tear on some videos in firefox though. Haven’t searched around enough yet to figure that out, but otherwise all good.

blindbunny ,

Sounds like you need to turn on hardware acceleration.

twotonebax ,
@twotonebax@lemmy.world avatar

Is that a per-app thing that can be done in Mint? Pretty much only get tearing in firefox when playing video, and I tried the ‘layers.acceleration.force-enabled true’ setting in about:config for firefox, but that didn’t really make a difference.

zellian ,

Welcome to Linux. I run mint and had screen tearing issues as well. Turns out mint detected my monitor correctly, but it had the wrong refresh rate. Once I set that to the correct refresh rate, my screen tearing was fixed. So I suggest checking that.

twotonebax ,
@twotonebax@lemmy.world avatar

I’m thinking its either nvidia on linux being nvidia on linux, or it not liking mixed resolutions and refresh rates. But really the only noticeable tearing I get is in firefox when playing video like youtube or something.

upandatom ,

I also had screen tearing issues immediately on startup into the mint installer. Had to run the installer in safe mode to get mint going. Once mint was fully installed and rebooted to my desktop for the first time, had the same screen issues as I did with the installer not in safe mode. So mint only worked during install and only in safe mode.

Maybe our issues are similar (I’m Nvidia 1080 card), but I was never able to fix mine.

This + DeArrow. DeArrow replaces clickbaity titles and thumbnails with better titles submitted by the community. I wouldn’t ever use youtube without it again. rudyharrelson ,
@rudyharrelson@lemmy.radio avatar

let’s be real, youtube is a big waste of time

I see people say this a lot, especially on the fediverse, and it makes me wonder why people think youtube is a “waste of time” when youtube’s uses are what the user makes of it.

I primarily use youtube for learning things. There are so many thousands of hours of useful, educational content on youtube that I find the suggestion that the entire platform is useless clickbait to be reductive and disingenuous.

Sure, there are channels I watch for typical mind-numbing content like Let’s Plays and such, but I wouldn’t suggest that youtube is wholly a waste of time just because there’s plenty of mindless content on it.

Just like Reddit or Lemmy, I can create an account and subscribe to a bunch of dumb shitposting communities, but I can also subscribe to a bunch of interesting hobbyist/intrigue communities.

jim ,
@jim@programming.dev avatar

If you are being intentional about its use, then you can get a lot out of it. But for some, maybe even most, YouTube is a distraction.

xavier666 ,

How to reduce time on Youtube or make it more enjoyable

  • avoid shorts completely (revanced)
  • avoid reaction videos
  • avoid any video which has someone with a mouth open or just making a ridiculous face
  • avoid videos with clickbaity thumbnails/titles (duh) no matter how much you like the creator
  • avoid videos which have “watch till the end” in the title
  • [Important] watch channels with moderate number of subs and views
faultypidgeon ,

Well, of course you are right. The problem is that for many people (including me) it is hard to use it in a way that actually brings value, because it is just too easy to spend hours on there without getting anything in return.

I also think that it is highly subjective what can be considered “good” or “bad” content. When it comes to educational content, I also would consider it a waste of time. Sure, if I have a real life problem and the solution happens to be described in a youtube video, there is nothing wrong with watching it. But often times I was just like “Oh, this could be useful at some point in the future” and at the end of the video I could hardly remember what it was about. I also don’t think that “mindless” content is inherently bad. If it helps someone to relax, go for it. I always felt worse afterwards.

Saying youtube would be a big waste of time in general is indeed reductive, but I think for many people it actually is, because it is just not designed to be used to bring you value. The only objective is that you spend as many hours on their platform as possible.

Reminder to support creators in other ways if you’re going to use this.

Edit: similarly, if you can afford it kick a few bucks to your Lemmy instance. We’re about freedom as in speech, not as in freeloading, people. The whole reason the internet shifted to being ad and data collection based after the dotcom bubble is because no one wants to pay for anything.

yuuunikki ,

I use ublock origin, sponsorblock, dearrow and I’m never turning them off

sneezycat ,
@sneezycat@sopuli.xyz avatar

You know creators get paid for the sponsor right? Not for if people watch that part or not.

smackjack ,

Thing is, the way a company determines if a sponsorship is working is by using offer codes. If no one is using an offer code, the company is going to assume that that sponsorship isn’t working out and might terminate the deal.

yuuunikki ,

Not my problem,I’m never sitting through ads/shilling ever again

teawrecks ,

A main reason youtube is so successful as an advertising product is their detailed metrics. Virtually every sponsor will want to see each video’s metrics which show retention during different parts of the video. It would be the same as putting the ad at the end of an hour long video; if they see a huge drop off where almost no one sees the ad, they may decide the creator didn’t fulfill their end of the contract, or pay them proportionally to the retention during the ad.

mlc894 ,

Why would a sponsor pay for an ad if they know nobody will watch? Its not magic money out of nowhere; the sponsor has to come out net positive or else they stop sponsoring.

smackjack ,

I have premium so they’re already getting my money.

teawrecks ,

Yeah, that’s fair.

I feel like I really shouldn’t have to. if people genuinely wanted to use your bot, they would opt in

Pika ,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

they would need to know about it is my only issue with that. It’s better to know and opt out, that way you know that it exists. Otherwise there was resources that nobody would know existed otherwise. A users personal opinion shouldn’t impact other users, and forcing bots to be opt in would impact the people who would want to use them just are unaware they exist.

No other major platform does bots as opt in, and that’s generally the reason for it

tilefan ,
@tilefan@lemm.ee avatar

lol so people’s personal opinions should only affect others so long as the effect is one you agree with? just make it one option for all bots. right when you sign up: do you want to see bots? check yes or no.

this isn’t supposed to be like other major platforms. most sites are concerned with driving engagement and retention, and user-made bots is a really cheap and lazy way to do that.

Pika ,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

No it would be stupid to think that, however if there is an argument between two ideologies, the side that gives the most Freedom should be the side that’s represented I would have thought the fediverse of all places would agree with that principle.

Secondly that option already exists on at least the three instances I’ve signed up. I figured it was a universal setting, Whether that option actually works or not I’m not sure because I’ve never actually checked it because I don’t mind Bots if there’s one that’s annoying I just block it.

As for your last part, I wouldn’t agree that Bots are a cheap way to drive engagement, most Developers won’t make a bot with the expectation of bringing more users to the platform or drive engagement, they make a bot to fill a gap in utility that the platform is not currently giving, Beit entertainment, moderation, informational. The only platform that I can think actively creates Bots with the intention of increasing monetary value and engagement would be Discord and even then that’s more of a stretch because it’s more Discord forcing the monetary features on the Developers

tilefan ,
@tilefan@lemm.ee avatar

you’re acting like I’m the person who made the argument. that entire first paragraph is an argument against what you said the first time.

I suggested a toggle feature, and you said they already exist and you don’t have a problem with them. so what’s left?

Pika ,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I might have not been clear, all my comments have been pro opt-out, not opt-in. I’m not sure where I was confusing in that so I will attempt to clarify

I responded to your comment of if “people genuinely wanted to use your bot, they would opt in” with my statement that that type of system is counterproductive to the freedom of choice that the Fediverse is built off, many people would never know the bot existed in the first place if it just doesn’t show. If you don’t like bots, fine, block them (or disable bot posts in settings if that button works, ive never personally tested it) and move on. Removing the choice from the users is not a fair option because it doesn’t preserve the freedom of the platform, which is giving everyone the choice.

It seemed like you have an actual hatred of bots in general, which is fine, to each their own, so I recommended that rather than subject yourself to having to deal with them, just turn them off. I don’t understand why you would want to subject yourself to seeing something you dislike.

tilefan ,
@tilefan@lemm.ee avatar

I suggested opt in. you stated why you thought that was a bad idea, and mentioned the toggle option. I agreed that the toggle option was good. we have arrived at the same page as far as I can tell

tilefan ,
@tilefan@lemm.ee avatar

also I see this a lot, don’t assume that everybody you meet on here is somehow a part of this monolithic fediverse. constantly I see people surprised to meet someone on this site with a differing opinion from them and they go, “I never thought I’d meet somebody like that HERE”. we are all individuals, and using a site doesn’t mean that you agree with, or even care about, the platform’s core principles.

Pika ,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I agree, everyone will have their own opinions of things, I do think there is a good reason to re-enforce the core values of the platform though, as that is the thing that separates this platform from the others. To revoke that would be to fall back against the same values that a lot of people on this platform joined it for, which is a decentralized freedom of choice platform. It was the main advertisement point of the fediverse, the ability to be free of a corporation or “superuser” choice. A lot of the people on the platform are a triage of “refugees” that fled to this platform from various sources either by limitation of speech or by their host site becoming toxic/unusable. As much as I hate “drinking the koolaid” I do have to agree that this the entire point of the freedom of federation is what makes this style of sites better than the other alternatives.
