You could go down the GPU Passthrough option to a VM. If you have integrated and and another GPU you could use LookingGlass and never even have to leave the Linux instance. Single passthrough is what i use to run Gamepass as you do get some good games Day one.

Matrix.

TheRealBoner , to youshouldknow in YSK: if you think taking an ambulance to an Emergency Room because you think it'll get you seen sooner. DON'T!

Also… In the US a lot of people don’t want to call an ambulance because of the cost, BUT it doesn’t cost anything for them to show up and assess whether you need to go in an ambulance or not. So if you are in a potentially life threatening situation, you should call 911. They can show up, potentially save your life, and then have a friend transport you.

Sjy ,

It isn’t common but some places do charge for an “assessment” in the US. It’s relatively cheap compared to a transport, like $50-75 at least that’s what I know from my experience and I’ve only ever worked at one place that did that.

Would 100% go JellyFin vs Plex, also toss in some sonarr/radarr automation and organization. Everyone should have some kinda media streaming server, even if its just kept in house.

12ft had a few months of being great, but I think they ended up selling out or giving in to legal pressure, and doesn’t do anything on several major news outlets anymore

That's my experience, as well. It worked great for a while but I have no luck with it anymore

JAGeorge , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

The biggest reason is my local public transportation. I live near a large city in northern West Virginia. The only bus that comes close to my address runs twice a day. Once at 7am and then again at 5pm. On top of that it would be a 20 minute walk, 10 minute bike ride, or 5 minute car ride to the bus stop. If I had to I could make it work but I can’t get groceries after work because I would miss the last bus by the time I got off work and finished my shopping. This means I would have to go out on Saturday at 7am and do my shopping and then catch the bus back at 5. Add on top of that having two kids and it’s just impossible. Unfortunately a lot of the US is like this. I wouldn’t mind if I had to pay more and my local government put more effort into public transit but that seems to be low on their list of priorities.

I will say that electric bikes and self driving cars in the future may change everything for the better.

If you have your own DNS server you can set a hostname there like 'jellyfin.myserver' and have that accessible from your internal network. If you want to do so on your PC you can edit your hosts file to add a custom entry. https://www.hostinger.com/tutorials/how-to-edit-hosts-file

got2best , to nostupidquestions in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

I think the free money train in leaving the station and everyone is scrambling to be profitable. But that’s just an assumption based on twitch and Reddit right now.

fryman , to selfhosted in DIY vs pre-build NAS for home use

Understand that this is a rabbit hole where you’ll hear a million opinions. If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend keeping it simple. It’s been a while since I looked at what’s new, but I’d look at truenas scale or unraid first.

I personally use truenas core (based on freebsd) but truenas scale (based on debian) opens up more options like docker that might be useful in the future.

I recommend sticking to hardware you already own until you run into something that you can’t do. Then you’ll have a better idea of what to look for and how everything works.

Piatro OP ,

Thanks, the flexibility and closed source (I assume) of turn key solutions puts me off them. I’ve already got a raspberry pi running a few containers and I work with docker and Linux in my day job so I know a decent amount. The form factor of the turnkey solutions is the big draw for me at the moment to them as I’ve just got a spare ATX mid size tower handy. Would ideally replace with smaller case but then I’d need a smaller motherboard and that’s just raising costs for starting out. Potential upgrade path anyway.

fryman ,

I have a node 304 case with an itx board and I wish I’d have gone with something bigger with more expansion slots. Some sata ports died on me so I installed an hba card to give me more. That means I can’t add a 10g nic or a video card for hardware acceleration or…you get the idea. Ideally spend less money now and experiment, then in the future you’ll hopefully learn what suits your needs.

Not sure how ansible works on Windows but you could use Windows Subsystem for Linux, install ansible on that and then off you go.
