It was just said a bunch by Seth Rogen in ‘Platonic,” so you’re about to hear it even more.

Uluganda , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

I don’t know what average people could do to break their system, considering nowadays, it is practically impossible to break anything if you are using Software Management tool your Distro gave. I don’t say I don’t believe you. Something could break. But I suppose you are trying to do something that average Joes would not attempt.

I installed Linux on my coworkers, friends and families, and nothing break. Heck, I even gave my friend Arch Linux. I told them to only install thing from the Store and never touch command line without talking to me first. It’s been 6 months.

Linux for average people is been there. It’s ready. OnlyOffice is just like Ms. Office but Open Source. If you are willing to learn, LibreOffice is far better than Ms. Office. Linux supports all browser. KdenLive and Krita work better in Linux. GNOME is way easier to navigate than Windows, with superior gesture and beauty Windows could only dream of.

Windows has its perk, but saying Linux is hard is no longer true.

xkforce ,

Once everything is set up, linux is easy. But… that installation process can still go very wrong. eg. The last install I did was Ubuntu 22.04. The version of systemd that shipped with it had a bug that caused the system not to boot. Replacing systemd with a working version fixed that issue. Then it turns out that 5 of the graphics card driver’s dependances were held back (something recent that Ubuntu does, I forget why) so the driver didnt work. Force installing the dependancies (drop to root before KDE started) fixed that.

So yeah if you set things up for someone of course its going to be easy to use. It SHOULD be easy to use after 30 years of development. But that initial setup process is often not user friendly.

iopq ,

I upgraded Ubuntu 20 LTS to Ubuntu 22 LTS in place and it broke everything including the Wifi drivers. Left with a black command line with no Internet, so I just wiped the drive

yhnavein ,

Yeah, but let’s try to install graphic drivers and everything starts to break down. And without them performance is just shit.

Uluganda ,

Are you using the driver supported by your distro? I’m not Nvidia user, but I have fair share of installing Nvidia drivers on Linux. As long as you don’t stray from driver the distro gave you, I never have problem. Literally not once.

And if you are trying to install AMD or Intel proprietary driver. Why? Just…, why?

Gerryflap ,
@Gerryflap@lemmy.world avatar

This is simply not true in my experience. Basically everyone I know has to deal with all kinds of shit when installing Linux. Broken graphics drivers, random freezes, the touchpad disabling after closing the laptop, wifi not working, etc. There’s always something. Now I don’t mind fixing that, because I enjoy Linux more despide all of these issues. Andost of my friends manage to solve it as well because they’re programmers like me. But the average person might not be able to solve it and will feel like they’re constantly interacting with a broken system.

dmmeyournudes , to nostupidquestions in How does Lemmy decide what goes in the hot feed?

the hot feed is the same as reddits rising feed. its not a hot feed, its just random posts that have gotten an above average number of upvotes in the last hour. this site is next to impossible to use between the lack of a hot page and all of the niche communities not being populated thus making the front page and your subfeed the same 5 communities, and they’re all memes.

Its a little more difficult to debug and fix issues compared to windows

RagingToad , (edited )

Is that true? Every error in Linux is logged, configurations are readable. For me, I’m very tech savvy, clicking around in GUIs hoping to find something, spelunking in event manager trying to find an error, is so much harder than in Linux.

This is very personal, I know. How do you debug and fix issues in Windows again? :-) It has been a while.

antihero ,

Yes, and everyone knows the blue screen of death!! It’s so annoying.

RagingToad ,

Well they thoroughly fixed that in Windows 2000 with better memory management. Has happened very rarely in versions after that.

But, yes, it’s also conveys very little useful information other than “I crashed, I hope you saved whatever you were doing”.

(But I’ve had crashes in Linux too, probably because of Nvidia)

@dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world avatar

Event viewer and dumps for bluescreens (in windows 10 and maybe 11 you have to enable it), I just hate having to use the terminal

I have nystagmus, so after a full day of reading for work and playing games online after, my eyes are too tired to sit there and read.

I switched to audiobooks about 8 years ago and haven't looked back. It's amazing. Increasing the speed slightly makes them sound more conversation speed, so start with 1.3-1.6. I'm up to 3.3 now, which gets me through books at an insane rate.

Yeah. I think I’d like to move to feddit.de when that becomes a possibility. Though I kinda do like my O.G. dev.lemmy.ml account too.

pinwurm , to nostupidquestions in What happened to the French colonists in the US. ?
@pinwurm@lemmy.world avatar

In some cases, they never went away. In New England - especially northern parts of Maine and New Hampshire, there are communities that are plurality Francophone, and have been Americans for generations.

I think one thing that people often don’t understand is that American English is highly influenced by the French language - accounting for 30% of all words. Words like Lieutenant are pronounced differently in British and American because of the French influence. Or the word “herb” - Americans don’t pronounce the H just like the French.

As far as cultural things, of course the US is known for its wine. Napa Valley is one of the best wine regions in the world. Those wines consistently beat French and Italian wines in international competitions. Finger Lakes, as well. American cheeses like cheddar are very popular. There are entire states known for this, like Vermont and Wisconsin. I think in terms of bread, you see more influence from Italian and German breadbakers then French.

That said, French influence is just one of many patches on the rich tapestry that is America. It was impactful, but the influence was definitely overshadowed by groups like Irish, Italian, Polish, Chinese, and African Slaves - whose descendants have created our greatest modern cultural exports.

One pain point I commiserate with mentioned here is the fractured nature of finding federated communities, which I don’t see any easy way to solve.

    That’s a fairly common saying in the bdsm community. Don’t “yuck someone’s yum”

    SirEDCaLot , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?

    A lot of people are talking about federation and access to admins. But what’s missing is defederation policy.

    Lemmy is a federated network of instances. If you’re on InstanceA and you make a community on InstanceA, and I’m on InstanceB, I can connect to your community on InstanceA. UNLESS, there’s a defederation- either InstanceA or InstanceB manually block the other. This is something the admins of the instance do.

    Different instances have different policies on when (if ever) they defederate. Beehaw for example defederated a number of instances, but that’s due to the experience Beehaw is trying to create- very inclusive and affirming and whatnot. That’s their choice, but it meant defederating some of the more popular public instances (including lemmy.world).

    //edit: Another thing relates to creating communities. Any communities you create will ‘live’ on your instance, and thus be under your instance’s rules. Some instancess are friendly to questionable subjects like piracy and NSFW material, others are not. So even if you don’t today intend to create any communities, it’s good to be on an instancewhose rules align with your own preferences.

    curiosityLynx ,

    Tbf, beehaw plans to refederate with lemmy.world once either the moderation tools for lemmy get better or lemmy.world makes it harder for trolls to just make a new lemmy.world account when banned from beehaw.

    SirEDCaLot ,

    True, but that brings up another point which I just edited into my parent comment- instance rules. Any communities you create will be hosted on your home instance and thus subject to your home instance’s rules. So you should make sure those rules align with the sort of activity you’ll want to be doing.

    hawkwind ,
    @hawkwind@lemmy.management avatar

    This could always change at the whim of an admin as well. It’s good to have admin “teams” and even foundations, but a lot of the time there’s one person making those decisions.

    Users and communities could be more portable. Admins should get to decide what is on their instance for sure, but right now there’s kind of a “lock in.” Which give admins disproportional control / responsibility. IMO.

    curiosityLynx ,

    I seem to remember account migration being something that is planned to eventually be possible, but until then, more important issues take precedence (also, many code contributors leave big things like this to the main devs and contribute small improvements instead).

    OutrageousUmpire ,

    Yes I agree—a big part of choosing an instance is who they are defederated with.

    Double_A , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

    Most of the time the frustrating thing is it’s users. If you look for help about something that is obviously badly designed somehow… You get gatekeeping or “you’re using it wrong” responses.

    And I have that feature on Lemmy, too.
