So does pihole as far as I know

ReiRose , to books in Silo series by Hugh Howey is excellent

Hard agree! I’m about 20 pages from the end of 3 and love this series!

pubtup , to books in How do you decide when to give up on a book?

I'll give an example. I read the first two sentences of blood meridian and decided not to read it and move on. I just don't have the time to commit unless the book really grabs me.

Correct_Answer , to books in Just read Project Hail Mary

It is a good read. The ending was little meh, but I liked everything else about it.

whereisk , to nostupidquestions in How do you find (fun & interesting) accounts to to follow on Mastadon?

Search for hashtags then add them to your follows, that will show you any post with those hashtags, from there you can follow people that seem to interest you.

@nosut@lemmy.world avatar

Learning to follow hashtags was a game changing moment for me on Mastodon. Went from not really using it at all to frequent user.

whereisk ,

Same. It’s a shame not enough weight is given in the interface or most intros. It’s really the best way to discover great content.

DrChickenbeer , to nostupidquestions in How do you find (fun & interesting) accounts to to follow on Mastadon?
@DrChickenbeer@kbin.social avatar

@mysoulishome

Write an introduction post (and make sure you hashtag it ). Use lots of hashtags in your posts, it will link you with other folks using the same ones. Jokey ones aren't very useful, try to keep them general.

Follow liberally (like the other commenter said, you can just unfollow if they stop being interesting, retoot generously (as there is no algorithms, retooting is the only way posts gain traction (and people will notice if you're retooting them), follow any hashtags that seem interesting.

Also, since nobody else mentioned it, always alt-text any images you shared, not only because it is courteous and expected for you to do so, but it will help you get followers, because many people won't follow people who don't use alt-text.

Oh, and the same goes with content warnings!

It's these little things that make good Mastodon members and will keep people engaged with you.

(You can watch how people who do well on the platform format their posts to validate what I've said).

Mastodon is awesome, I love it. Good luck!

PS: I almost forgot to mention your instance! Check out your local timeline to see what's going on there. If there isn't anything interesting there maybe move to a more active instance, or one that reflects your interests.

Sorry this is so long, I kept adding things.

killabeezio , to selfhosted in Anyone hosting pixelfed using docker?

Not sure what pixelfed is, but you yelling I need help doesn’t really help anyone. What problems are you having exactly. What image are using? What commands are running? What have you tried?

A10 OP ,
@A10@kerala.party avatar

sorry for the rant, I have updated the post.

killabeezio , (edited )

I don’t even know if that’s being maintained. I couldnt find anything on docker hub. It does look like this one is maintained though blog.pixelfed.de/2020/05/29/pixelfed-in-docker/

Maybe give that one a try. It seems like you are already using his image anyway. Also it seems like the command to run for the worker is different in his image.

If you have issues with that setup, feel free to post what issues you having.

Technically you don’t really need to setup a bunch of networks unless you are trying to host this or something, which I wouldn’t recommend docker compose anyway. So, if you wanted to keep it simple, you could just the default network.

Another note, while zknt/pixelfed does exist on docker hub. It was moved to quay, so continue using that image.

Thanks I figured it out. And created an Ansible playbook gitea.com/…/federated-services-docker-ansible

OutrageousUmpire , to conservative in A moderate's view of political groups on lemmyworld

I think it might be a good idea for American conservatives (not the election denying weirdo ones) to create their own instance completely. And defederate from instances with which they are concerned might interfere. Keep the conversation heavily moderated—again, keep the conversation about policy and not election denying nonsense. Just my $.02

bloopinator ,

I couldn’t disagree more. This is what I hate about the internet in 2023. Everyone is expected to fall into one of two buckets, and if you don’t fall into the correct one, you’re just not welcome on certain sites and expected to make your own site somewhere completely separate. Nobody can handle when people disagree with them, so instead we just get horribly toxic echo chambers.

Back in 2014 you could express a moderately conservative opinion on Reddit without being banned from subs. Hell, back in 2014 you could express far-right opinions and people would just rightfully call you a moron. But today on basically every site, you have 3 options: Agree with the site’s opinion, keep your mouth shut, or get banned.

The internet was better when people were allowed to disagree with each other.

I say this on purpose to annoy my friends, especially in situations where it’s not needed

Laila ,

Ditto, I use it ironically for things that truly reprehensible. I.e. “I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum, but cannibalism isn’t for me.”

Zippit , to books in Silo series by Hugh Howey is excellent

I listened to the audiobooks after I finished the series and loved it. I do recommend listening at a 1.15 speeding rate though, because some sections were slow.

reddig33 , to books in Silo series by Hugh Howey is excellent

Honestly, I read the first book and found the TV adaptation was better (which is rare). The characters have better motivations, secrets aren’t spilled so quickly — it’s just a tighter narrative.

ReiRose ,

There are more secrets! I’m at the end of book 3 and still having secrets revealed.

adibis , to retrogaming in Are ARM/Android Handhelds on the way out?

I think the issue has always been software. Hardware, once built, is cheap. Supporting software is expensive.

If windows on arm or steam gets its act together and we have better arm support then x86 doesn’t make any sense for handhelds.

esmazer , to nostupidquestions in Does anyone know how to solve incorrect_login when logging into Lemmy?

Similar experience with Voyager and Jerboa on Android specially when there was an influx of users. It was easier to login late at night.

I solved it. Turns out if the password is long/complex enough, I have problems logging in from my iPhone.

I use Authy, but these comments are going to make me check out Authenticator Pro, especially since I see its backup story on the main page, and it supports sha256, which Authy does not (and enabling current Lemmy 2fa silently fails).
