Leela, and not because I had a crush on her as a kid.

She’s strong no nonsense, but pigheaded enough to make mistakes. Still, her heart is always in the right place.

argv_minus_one , to gaming in Comfort games?

Try not to have an overly rosy retrospection about this. There were plenty of crappy, cash-grabby games in decades past. We just don’t remember them because they were crappy, cash-grabby, and not worth remembering. They hadn’t invented microtransactions yet, but that’s just one more flavor of crappiness.

caio , to gaming in Your favorite board games?

Some of our favorites are Catan, power grid, ticket to ride, azul, and bananagrams.

SoaringFox , to gaming in Your favorite board games?

We’ve been playing Camel Up a lot. It’s nice because there is some skill and a good amount of luck involved, so no matter your board game experience, you have a shot at winning.

Agricola is my favorite but it is pretty complex so we don’t play much.

pussytermin4tor1337 , to gaming in Your favorite board games?

We play all the dune games at work. The new remake of 1978, done betrayal and dune imperium. And sometimes twilight imperium.

With friends we have bought spirit island, which is fun but really difficult. We also play dead of winter and some DND spinniof games. My mate works at a Games Store so he has lots of games i haven’t played yet. Oh and I’ve joined a poker home game.

My favourite is twilight imperium if we can ever find enough people who can spend their whole day playing a game.

START9 ,

You have (in my opinion) a great taste in games.
There's nothing quite like a session of TI. It doesn't get on the table a lot but the few times it does it's amazing every time.

Unfortunately I personally get to play big games all to seldom as I mostly play with my SO and she prefers them a bit lighter and with a bit less conflict. Some of the games we've enjoyed and played recently 2 player..

Viticulture is the one we fall back on alot of the time. It really is a great worker placement.

Castles of Burgundy is a new one in our collection but probably not new to a lot of people in the hobby. Really don't know why I've not picked this up earlier because it is a really good game.

If we want to go for something fast we usually bring out Azul. No setup time and no teardown is a trait I value more now than I have in the past. Sure Gloomhaven is fun but the setup alone makes me want to cry.

@monkeytennis@beehaw.org avatar

If you haven’t tried it, I’d recommend Cascadia for a couples game. Also, Tuscany adds some pleasant complexity to Viticulture … Not that you were asking for recommends, I just couldn’t resist…

Elbullazul , to gaming in What are some of your favorite game mechanics?

wallrunning from titanfall 2, driving a mech like in titanfall 2, basically every mechanic from titanfall 2

Rats ,

Titanfall 2 was so good, I miss it. A lot of it’s slick movement mechanics show up in some of those modern “movement shooters” like Ultrakill for example.

mobiuscoffee , to technology in what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back
@mobiuscoffee@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think many people were looking for a reason to leave but kind of felt stuck seeing all the alternatives being either dead or abrasive.

Lemmy seems to have captured the soul of what a significant portion of people have already been looking for.

KoboldCoterie ,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

This describes me perfectly. Most of the alternatives I saw previously just ended up being coopted by the alt-right crowd who got chased off of Reddit. Lemmy (so far) represents what I want from an online community.

Arystique OP ,
@Arystique@beehaw.org avatar

Its so weird that the alt right hasn’t tried to seize Lemmy yet from my experience it was always the immediate fate of Reddit alts in curious if the alt right is too busy over at truth social (or rumble) oh could we please get a youtube alt next that would be so great

JohnDumpling ,

Peertube is a good federated alternative to Youtube, it also connects to the Fediverse and there is a central search engine called Sepia Search, which makes it easier to find content on the different instances.

Arystique OP ,
@Arystique@beehaw.org avatar

I have to agree with you on that I saw a comment earlier about the people who left Reddit being a loud minority but something feels off about that

Lemmy’s community feels so familiar I sadly just can’t find the right words to describe it though

Herb ,

Lemmy in it’s current state feels very similar to reddit did ~14 years ago.

I am just smitten. I’ll never go back.

roizor ,

Exactly. Lemmy is great, and is essentially all I wanted from Reddit without the Reddit

Tenkuucastle , to gaming in Your favorite board games?

I’ve been getting into Go/Baduk lately, it’s a shame how few people there are playing it in the US! Would love to play in-person instead of always online

rejpal ,

Go is the most amazing game I know. I often regret not sticking with it as a kid. And IRL games are wonderful. The feeling of the stones on fingertips, the rattle of prisoners, the clicks and clacks when placing stones on the goban…

Ingannilo , to retrogaming in What is the oldest game you still like playing today?

I still love everything I played from the N64 era, and the old tycoon games (RCT2/OpenRCT) are amazing. Oldest recent fun was finding some great sesame street games I played as a kid to share w/ my son who is just learning letters and counting. Ernie’s Big Splash (1986) and Astro Grover (1984). Neither would really hold my attention today as an adult though.

foreman ,
@foreman@lemmy.world avatar

I have been on a rct2 binge recently. Nothing quite his like that game and openrct is the best thing to ever happen to it. And agreed on the n64 era. It was like magic.

nutomic , to lemmy in How is Lemmy going to make money?
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

Donations will work totally fine. If you checkout the Mastodon Patreon, they are getting 28k euros per month, and more through other platforms. With the way Lemmy is growing now, it should definitely be enough to pay the salaries for dessalines and me, and hopefully even take on more contributors.

Anyway lets wait how the Reddit blackout next week goes before discussing funding in detail. Things are still uncertain now.

Avian_Carrier ,

Please make mod tools a top priority. It’s absolutely asinine that I need to have someone comment in a community to add them as a mod.

CannotSleep420 ,

Hell, even if it isn’t strictly a mod tool, being able to do this from someone’s profile page would be good.

    As a workaround you can go into the database and query directly for users with rejected application and email provided. Then write a script to email them. Getting a fix developed, reviewed, merged and deployed will take a few days in the best case. And even longer now because we are busy with lots of things.

    It’s more closely related to the initial intentions of the internet than most other social platforms. Ideally it could get things going back in the right direction again iif nothing else!
