Mumble in combination with XMPP is the most hassle free and low resource option. Just for small personal use snikket.org XMPP is probably the best.

Matrix Synapse also works, but if you join any large rooms it will blow up ram and storage space usage, thus I can’t really recommend it.

I’m a Mac and iPhone user. I don’t think I have any subscription apps.

Thank god you don’t have a medical condition making frequent bathroom break necessary or they’d probably be in hot water.

Never realized that I was missing this in my life. It’ll be nice to have a place where my love of pineapple on pizza will be accepted.

100beep , to nostupidquestions in Humans get sick when drinking dirty water, so how do wild animals survive drinking mainly dirty water?

It depends on your definition of “dirty water.”

When agriculture was invented, it created large numbers of people in one place. This pollutes water, mostly because humans shit all over the place and then dump it in the river. This happened to a much greater extent when we industrialized, with coal dust and other toxins getting into the water supply. Which we now need to (and do) filter out.

This wasn’t a concern for most of Earth’s existence, and, in many remote places, still isn’t a concern. (I’m thinking Arctic here, there’s no significant human or industrial presence.)

It’s also a matter of immune system. If you’re drinking unfiltered water your entire life, you’re going to build up a natural resistance to whatever bacteria may be in that water. This can be seen in modern-day - when many tourists go to somewhere with lower water quality, they’ll get stomachaches from the water because they’re not used to it. (I had that problem when I spent a summer in Warsaw, frex.)

I used to have an antenna hooked up just to watch Svengoolie on MeTV and live tweet along (then they changed the schedule.)

Being able to switch to Star Trek and just zone out was nice too. Sure I can pick and choose specific ones on streaming, but there’s episodes I’d otherwise not think to revisit which pop up on broadcast.

j0shh4nxd , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

Just switched back to Android a few days ago after using the iPhone for quite some time. Customization and control were my favorite reasons for Android in the past and it stayed the same. I use a Pixel 7 Pro with GrapheneOS. The fact that I even have an option to use a different OS that focuses on privacy is amazing.

Gerryflap , to android in What phone are you using?
@Gerryflap@lemmy.world avatar

Currently using a Nokia 7.2

Best qualities:

  • Cheap
  • Has a heaphone jack
  • Does smartphone things
  • Fell like 5 times from more than a meter of height into a stone floor and is somehow still fine (more luck than skill probably)

Worst qualities:

  • Not the fastest
  • No more updates :(
  • Randomly turns off about once every month at night while charging, which forced me to buy a backup alarm

Before this I was using a Moto G5 plus, which was a bit of a quirky phone. Before that I used my Nexus 5, which ultimately started suffering the power button issues. My Nexus 5 is still a backup phone that I use sometimes, and every time I touch it I wish that they’d release a new Nexus 5 just like the old one but with with newer hardware specs and a better battery. I love how light and small it is, I still love the screen, and I love how it looks.

From this you can probably gather that I don’t upgrade phones too often. I also don’t have any other Android devices. I did at one point dabble a bit into Android development and made a few silly apps, but that’s many years ago at this point.

For my PC’s I usually use Linux where I can, and Window$ for gaming and music production (because sadly that’s the only way to make these things work reliably).

zeroscan , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

I’d guess because for a lot of us in the USA, public transportation is insufficient to meet our needs. I’d love to take a train from home to work, but there’s no train line that’s anywhere near my house. They’re building one that’ll go near my work, but it’s not done yet. Busses are available, I suppose…but the time it’d take to get from home to work or back would be a lot longer than driving takes, even in heavy traffic, given that I’d have to transfer several times.

For longer trips, again, the infrastructure just isn’t there. To visit my sister, for instance, requires taking a bus if I want to take the public transportation option. My (step)son takes the bus to go see his dad (who lives in the same city as my sister) since he doesn’t like driving, and it takes a good 2 extra hours compared to driving. We should have train service, but no…Scott Fucking Walker killed the project back in 2010 when he got elected governor of Wisconsin.
