Action_Bastid , to nostupidquestions in I personally dont but why do you think ppl care so much about being downvoted on internet chat forums?
@Action_Bastid@lemmy.world avatar

On reddit, reaching a certain negative score threshold would often hide your comment, meaning that your contribution to the thread would be hidden. As the site got older, karma began to be used as an initial leaping off point for participation in some communities, making down votes socially expensive for casual participants, since that slowed their ability to interact with the more restrictive communities in the site.

Why not Zoidberg?

thunder looks cool, but just like jerboa it is in early alpha, they can be a bit unstable, for the time being i’ll personally stick to the web browser.

unphazed , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

I live 5 miles out from the city im WV. I would need to walk/bike up and down hills for 2 miles at a minimum just to get to a local transit stop.

I loved that they gave Dr. M'Benga some screentime front and center and showed that he can throw down if necessary, even if it was with the help of some super serum stuff. And while I even loved his (and Nurse Chapel's ) elaborate fight scene and enjoyed the way they filmed it, I'm also not sure if it quite fits with Star Trek. Just not sure yet with the excessive slow motion. The camera angles however were some great artistic choice. But overall one great start to season 2.

ClumsyTomato , to nostupidquestions in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?
@ClumsyTomato@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

In my current case, because my local public transport service is not the most convenient.

I live in a medium sized city were we only have bus service. We have many lines covering “almost” all the city, but each of the lines only has a relatively small number of buses available. This causes long delays between arrivals and makes combinations very difficult when needing to use more than one line. Waiting times of 40 minutes in the bus stops are not uncommon. By car, it takes me 15 minutes to go anywhere.

Another issue is with pricing: in our case buying individual tickets VS a monthly pass only makes sense when you do more than 40 trips every month. It literally costs me more to use the bus than to pay for gas.

In the past I lived in much bigger cities with underground service and plenty of buses available, and I barely used the car, and didn’t even considered the pricing.

TotoroTheGreat , to technology in What are your favorite browser extensions?
@TotoroTheGreat@beehaw.org avatar

I use Firefox. Other than Ublock Origin and Bitwarden, these are some of my favourites :

Temporary Containers is a new favourite of mine. It works just like container tabs, but the difference is that it deletes the history of that tab once it’s closed, similar to Incognito/Private instance.

Reddit Comments for Youtube - If a youtube video has been linked to reddit, then it basically gives a small box which lists all the subs the video has been linked to and shows you the comments. If you’re logged into reddit, then it will allow you to comment as well.

Keepa for Amazon. Let’s you track price history for any product, so you can see if a sale is actually a real sale or not.

Tab Session Manager - Basically lets you save tab sessions.

Enhancer for Youtube and Pockettube Subscription Manager - Gives various youtube enhancements.

Stylus - To style websites. I mainly use it to fix the youtube thumbnail and font size.

This place is definitely not dead. Quite lively, in fact. I’m not sure why there being a bigger star trek community somewhere means that this one would be useless

I’ve been visiting Reddit since 2006 and had an account there for nearly 17 years. I remember it before subreddits were a thing. It was for tech nerds and other associated weirdos before entering a genuinely charming period for a few years, but those days are long in the past. I’d rather try out something new with a smaller group of interesting people who are also into trying new things, and I hope this site is able to keep chugging along regardless of whatever is happening at Reddit.

I first joined r/startrek over 12 years ago when it was about 3000 subscribers. I had a lot of fun. Every post could be seen and not drowned out. No troll issues. Those early days were really nice.

randon31415 , to nostupidquestions in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

A lot of technological flux going on right now, what with an entire generation partially trained to do WFH and job mobility that brings, the retirement of the tech-phobic boomers, the extremely tight labor market, Russian money going to “more important endevors” (which might also be why bit coin is down), and AI threatening to automate 80% of the workforce. Tech company owners are frightened and making random dumb or scared decisions because of it.

3migo , to explainlikeimfive in What does it mean by a community getting defederated in an instance?
@3migo@lemmy.world avatar

Each Lemmy intance is hosted by a different person or entity. Lemmy World is hosted by User A, while Beehaw is hosted by User B.

The way federation works, however, is that it allows for User A to connect their server/Lemmy instance to User B’s server/Lemmy instance. This allows for users on Server A to talk to people who are using Lemmy over on Server B.

However, letting your servers interact with other servers is not required. If users of one server are causing problems with your Lemmy instance, you can remove your server from theirs, which removes their access. This is referred to as defederation.

So when Beehaw is defederating other servers, it means they are blocking other servers from interacting with Beehaw.

The VC money is drying up and they’re demanding a return on investment as the world’s economy struggles on at the moment.
