Remember that “top U.S. general” who unequivocally and with 100% certainty told the U.S. that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction - which led to the longest “war”, for nothing, in U.S. history?
Well that was a whole conspiracy that was never prosecuted and was a special event. I take your point but do think that it was a very unique period in history.
Japan is getting caught in the middle of the US-China trade war. Japan’s largest trading partners are, in order, China, ASEAN and the US. The strong USD is leading to more expensive imports from the US and American policy on trade curbs is harming trade with China.
I guess this is one way to ensure a bipolar world… Crush the EU (by knocking out the German economic powerhouse) then force Japan to go against their largest trading partner so their economy ends up in the gutter.
*Nov 19 (Reuters) - A humanitarian assessment team visited Al Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza and saw signs of shelling and gunfire in what was described as a “death zone,” the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.
The WHO-led team, which included public health experts, logistics officers and security staff from various U.N. departments, was able to spend only an hour inside the hospital on Saturday due to security concerns, WHO said in a statement.
The team described the hospital as a “death zone” and said the situation was “desperate,” with the hospital basically not functioning as a medical facility due to scarcity of clean water, fuel, medicine and other essentials.
“Signs of shelling and gunfire were evident. The team saw a mass grave at the entrance of the hospital and were told more than 80 people were buried there,” the WHO statement said.
The hallways and hospital grounds were filled with medical and solid waste, and patients and health staff expressed fear for their health and safety, it said. There were 25 health workers and 291 patients, including 32 babies in critical condition, remaining in Al Shifa, WHO said.*
“WHO and partners are urgently developing plans for the immediate evacuation of the remaining patients, staff and their families,” it said.
Won’t be the last time either. The USA does not care about local concerns when they are in the defense of world threats. This makes completely logical sense but also the USA clearly takes it too far. The USA would invade it’s closest allies if it meant they could secure their world position a fraction of a fraction of a percent more. We do not care.
Israeli right-wing militaristic government and Hamas both got to create another generation of Palestinians who will resent Israel and perpetuate the violence. Its exactly what they both needed.
Edit: to be clear, both countries got nothing out of this, and the Israeli and Palestinian people got nothing out of this
Tbh, the Hamas did get kind of something out of this in that the Palestinian crisis got more attention than I’ve ever seen before. A new generation of young people have seemed to have escaped the Israeli propaganda and support freedom for Palestinians. Hopefully, people don’t forget after the ceasefire and we get some sort of more permanent solution, preferably a one state one, but Joe and other leaders prefer a two state one, but whatever works.
I really hope you’re right, a lasting peace feels out of reach when the scars of the partition are still fresh. I’m Indian American, and the partition of India in 1947 feels like a similar situation (with less active conflict afaik).
I can only hope that as time passes the generations to come can take more positive action.
