DanglingFury , to lemmyshitpost in The Factory must grow.

Who could think to develope this scenic mountain range into an industrial complex. It wouldn’t be economical to establish utility and transportation infrastructure, let alone the private cost for each facility and the cost of exporting goods. It mkght be eligible for strip mining since you can pop the top and the shit falls right into the hopper while those mountain springs carry all the tailings away for you (see appalachia).

It is much easier to establish an industrial park in a level area, preferable near navigable water. Enter wetlands and low lying coastal forests. Avatar was dead on with this. They make for the most economical places to clear/drain, pave over and exploit. Distance to the port is a major factor in profit margins and long term savings can overcome development costs in shit areas (see New Orleans). Can’t stop the work.

Rentlar , to lemmyshitpost in Government bonds anyone?

Not much different than having it in a chequing account except that I’m less likely to spend it on something stupid.

1 year GIC rates are pretty good (4-5%) but considering that 50% of people under 55 can’t afford a $1000 surprise expense it’s not really a question of getting a handful of dollars from interest that the government could have given you to invest.

PhlubbaDubba ,

See facts like this make me wonder if a Norway style sovereign wealth fund could be developed to close the gaps in people’s quality of life and what they’ve put into working.

It’s not like the US is short on natural resource wealth to invest as the principle, and put together with a restructured tax regime it could significantly reduce the net burden for most americans, and especially the most misfortuned americans.

General_Effort ,

The US is a net importer, though. It wouldn’t make sense.

PhlubbaDubba ,

I think that has more to do with the economics than the availablity in most cases

General_Effort ,

Being a net importer, means the US consumes more than it produces. It vaguely makes sense because it is still a growing county.

Norway’s oil fund protects the domestic economy from the negative consequences of being an oil exporting nation. Less kindly, you could call it currency manipulation. The US would be ill-advised to do like-wise, given its import surplus.

I honestly never encounter this? It’s so rare for any website to flag me as using and ad blocker. I use Firefox and ublock origin which I assume to be pretty standard

manny_stillwagon ,

Hello there, sounds like you’re experiencing survivorship bias.

Its rare for you to see this, sure. Same for everyone else. But people aren’t here to post screenshots of “look at this website where I didn’t get flagged for having an ad blocker.” So we just see a lot of screenshots where it is a problem, because that’s what is noteworthy. There isn’t someone out there getting flagged on every single website they open, we’re just sampling a large population of user for only the websites where people do get flagged.

Why are we talking about this at all? Because it is becoming more common and more intrusive. This example is particularly egregious because you’re already on the website to give them money. They’re complaining to the user they they don’t get to make money off of them while taking their money, which is ridiculous.

lolcatnip ,

How can it be survivorship bias? Seeing messages about ad blockers doesn’t kill you or otherwise make you unable to post about it.

franklin ,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’d be more correct to call this example selection bias but survivorship bias does not have to involve morality.

It simply refers to data which misrepresents the likelihood or severity of a failure state due to some failure conditions being excluded from the data. This leads to overly optimistic projections.

Nice, they’re worried about losing ad money and analytics over losing more money by selling what their whole business is about.
