SaltyIceteaMaker , to linux in TIL about /dev/full

My knowledge about useful/funny /dev files grows by the day…

I now know of: random & urandom, null, zero and now full…

Bouta make an infinity gauntlet meme of them

lambdabeta ,

Wait until you learn about the shell specific /dev “files” like /dev/udp and /dev/tcp (which can send/recv IP traffic as if from a file)!

Kalcifer , to linux in NTFS turns 30 years old today! I hear it's still in use by some crufty old legacy operating systems 😁

I’ve heard that ReFS is supposedly replacing NTFS, on Windows.

Happy_Harry ,

ReFS still is not supported for use as a boot (C:) drive, but it’s used extensively in enterprise environments for VHD storage and as a backup target.

Snapshotting and merging is much faster because of “Fast Cloning.” It also has something called “integrity streams” which can be used to tell if data has been corrupted.

I don’t understand this all at a deep level, but it seems promising.

I heard, this commercial distribution “Windows” still uses it. But this thing just recently got a (very limited) package manger. So they seem to be very late with adapting to current technology.

On the bright side it only very rarely destroys itself when updating. However, some very loud foss distributions do it fairly often.

Dirk ,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

It forces you to update and then works at “something something” for 5 minutes to 5 hours and then reboots and does the same thing again but after logging in, none of your applications are updated and also none of the system seems to be changed with the updates. You don’t even get proper status information during updates.

Of course it doesn’t destroy itself when it doesn’t change anything …

Oof this is only thing if you have the os on an HDD. I’ve had similar behavior on *buntu running off of an HDD.

On an sdd or nvme you’ll never have stuff like this happen.

There is an argument to be made for it being better ux to not have programs update without telling you. Winget isn’t perfect, but it can auto update your stuff if need be.

Windows Server 2022 supports hotpatching in Azure and on prem if hosted on Azure Stack HCI. Not sure if it’s coming to Windows 11 or not.

I really enjoyed it, the random pop culture references didn’t really feel natural to me, but you could say it makes sense in the context of the characters. Definitely excited to see where the sequel goes.

I’m not a fan of the Turtles but I do like them. I went to see this because my youngest had obviously got wind of it on YouTube and something about it grabbed him.

For a bit of perspective, I enjoyed the 90s cartoon, the first live action film (I love the animatronics) and the CGI film TMNT.

Mutant Mayhem was a brilliant film, even if your not a die hard fan. I love the colourful art style as well which was so fresh and different from anything else. It’s probably going to be a 4K release for me, that art needs to be appreciated.

The story went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and I loved Jackie Chan as Splinter. His fight scene involving an office chair was very Chan in style.

Of course there’s a mid credit tease and considering they were a character I was expecting to see all through the film, I hope we get a sequel.

MrScottyTay , to moviesandtv in **TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM** Discussion Megapost 2023-08-02 🐢🥷

Just seen this really really enjoyed it.

Some human designs were a bit strange but I can see what they were going for.

Sound design beyond licensed music was astounding. Didn’t realise that it was Trent Reznor till the credits which makes complete sense.

Loved the sketchy artstyle and the look it gave in motion especially during the action sequences.

I was never that much of a turtles fan growing up but this made me appreciate it. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the sequel.

kingmongoose7877 OP ,

Would you say the character design is more faithful to the original Kevin Eastman comic book art?

MrScottyTay , (edited )

I’m not a comic guy so I’m unreliable, but there are moments that to me felt reminiscent of that artstyle (there’s a few style changes throughout). I think the artstyle in general is trying to emulate that sort of rough sketchy artstyle the comics had but giving it that colourful makeover that people mostly know the turtles for from the cartoons. A nice middle ground that makes itself look rather unique in its execution.

The standard design of the turtles themselves feels like a unique take on them, trying to make them actually look and feel like teenaged turtles. I think it works really well.

From the linked article…

Whether the release date is connected, ticket sales were veering on scary as the comedic thriller debuted in third place to a lackluster $24 million. Competition was heightened as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” remained unexpectedly strong in their sophomore outings, collecting a combined $140 million over the weekend. Of course, nobody anticipated the power of “Barbenheimer” when setting the film calendar.

Pretty much the entire game of Shadowrun: Hong Kong revolves around Kowloon Walled city and it’s one of my favourite games.

I use both. I like Linux better, even more since W10. It’s spyware, crap, all those nasty things. But hey, I’m a pc gamer and, sadly enough, my games (80% of them) all get funcky in Linux (wine, playonlinux,… I tried it all), so guess I’m stuck with the crap. But again, Linux is far better and superior
