It’s just insane. Where I live fire-fighters closely follow weather forecast, have deep understanding of wind patters in the area and if there’s any risk a forest fire will reach a village everyone is immediately evacuated. When volcano erupted in La Palma the mayor was personally knocking on doors to see if everyone left. Posting evacuation orders on X is a joke.

PowerCrazy , to worldnews in Man who threatened Biden shot dead in FBI raid in Utah

So like it’s cool just to murder people exercising their free speech on the internet?

negativeyoda ,

Freedom of speech, not freedom from the consequences of said speech. It’s explicitly illegal to do what this smoothbrain did.

He wasn’t killed for saying anything. Sounds like this mouthbreather decided to suicide by cop when they confronted him. I’m no fan of cops, but FAFO in this case

PowerCrazy ,

What law did he break? Please cite it.

Also if the consequences of “free speech” is being summarily executed or jailed, that isn’t really free speech is it? Do i have the freedom to rob a bank, but not the freedom from the consequences of robbing the bank?

StalinIsMaiWaifu ,

The warrent had 3 counts: interstate threats, threats against the president, and influencing, impeding and retaliating against federal law enforcement officers by threat

Also free speech is shit like: Biden is a terrible president and I fucking hate this country

Talking about how you should grab your ghillie + rifle to great the president is crossing the line

negativeyoda ,

LordOfTheChia ,

There’s even more details on other news articles. The guy was making explicit threats to a lot of people:

"I want to stand over Bragg and put a nice hole in his forehead with my 9mm and watch him twitch as a drop of blood oozes from the hole as his life ebbs away to hell!!” he wrote

"The time is right for a presidential assassination or two,” Robertson reportedly wrote in a September 2022 Facebook post. “First Joe then Kamala!!!”

"Hey FBI, you still monitoring my social media? Checking so I can be sure to have a loaded gun handy in case you drop by again,” he wrote in one post.

www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2023/08/…/amp/

JillyB ,

Credible threats have less free speech protection. But I’m also concerned about this. The article doesn’t have any details about the raid. If they were trying to arrest him and he pulled a gun, then that’s just how it goes. If it was a no-knock raid, then it’s closer to summary execution, in my opinion. Hopefully more details come out about this.

“I hear Biden is coming to Utah. Digging out my old ghillie suit and cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle.”

“Perhaps Utah will become famous this week as the place a sniper took out Biden the Marxist.”

Those probably cross the line and might not be protected speech. Especially when posted with pictures of the firearms and equipment in question.

PowerCrazy ,

What line? Where is this line defined? Can you cite some law that he was breaking that necessitated a death-squad to pay him a visit?

EvilColeslaw ,
@EvilColeslaw@beehaw.org avatar

Among other possibilities, Utah Code § 76-5-107

(2) (a) An actor commits a threat of violence if the actor: (i) (A) threatens to commit an offense involving bodily injury, death, or substantial property damage; and (B) acts with intent to place an individual in fear of imminent serious bodily injury, substantial bodily injury, or death; or (ii) makes a threat, accompanied by a show of immediate force or violence, to do bodily injury to an individual. (b) A threat under this section may be express or implied.

They showed up with an arrest warrant. Unless and until there’s some evidence where they just rolled up with the intent to murder him, I’m going to presume that’s not the case.

PowerCrazy ,

They are cops doing a no-knock raid at 6:00am, of course they are had intent to murder.

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Investigating the 'spiritual healers' sexually abusing women

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A hidden world of sex abuse and exploitation by men working as “spiritual healers” has been uncovered by BBC Arabic.

It is mostly women who visit healers - believing that they can solve problems and cure illness by expelling evil spirits known as “jinn”.

Testimonies gathered by the BBC from 85 women, over a period of more than a year, named 65 so-called healers in Morocco and Sudan - two countries where such practices are particularly popular - with accusations ranging from harassment to rape.

Dalal (not her real name) sought treatment for depression from a spiritual healer in a town near Casablanca a few years ago, when she was in her mid-20s.

In Sudan, a woman named Sawsan told us that when her husband left the family home to live with a second wife - as is his right under Sharia (Islamic law) - she found herself destitute, and approached a healer for help.

In Sudan, Dr Alaa Abu Zeid, head of the family and society department at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, was initially reluctant to believe that so many women had reported experiences of abuse to us.

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in The Russians hunting for cheap flats in occupied Mariupol

This is the best summary I could come up with:

There’s been a steady stream of glowing reports on state TV portraying the reconstruction of Mariupol as proceeding at a “record-breaking” pace and life returning to normal.

Satellite images analysed by the BBC indeed show multiple high-rise estates appearing in existing neighbourhoods across the city over the past year, mostly near the outskirts.

These include an entire neighbourhood - with an area of about 315,000 sqm, according to satellite footage - in the city’s east, another part of Mariupol badly hit by the fighting.

One woman whose block was demolished, Anna, told local pro-Russian TV station Mariupol 24 she was denied a replacement flat because she owns an 8 sqm shed in a village 40km outside the city.

Built by a private Russian construction company, its website creates the impression of a luxury development, and it will be sold on the free market to mortgage holders.

And if it recaptures the city, property rights given during occupation will likely be declared void, Oona Hathaway, a professor of law at Yale University, told the BBC.

What a bully

ReallyKinda , (edited ) to worldnews in Unilever will let Russia employees be conscripted

I worked at a couponing business for awhile and learned that Unilever, Procter & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive own almost everything on the shelves in US groceries and pharmacies.

Additional fun fact: idk what the arrangement is now, but my aunt worked at a Kelloggs (incidentally not owned by one of the three above afaik) factory in the 80’s and after filling the branded boxes they’d fill the store brand boxes with the same stuff. Very likely you’re still supporting some of these companies buying store brands.

reddig33 ,

Where did all the coupons go? I never see them anymore. I even checked the Sunday paper.

ReallyKinda ,

P&G recently stopped their print insert so you have to go online and unileaver only sends one out occasionally now. Keep an eye out for smartsource and Save (formerly red plum). Some weeks are skipped, there’s a schedule here.

Never had the patience for couponing myself, but the company I worked for (summer job) was one that would buy papers in bulk, clip and sort the coupons, and mail them to you for a per coupon fee. I just looked and the company is still up and running.

reddig33 ,

Thanks! Coupons really help in this economy. Surprised I haven’t seen more of them.

ReallyKinda ,

Absolutely! Potatoes are still up 300% compared to pre-pandemic at my grocery😭

You can also look at manufacturer websites for printable coupons along with taking advantage of coupons built into grocery store apps. I think a lot of them are moving digital.

bric ,

I think it’s funny when people act like the store brands are way worse than name brand, as you said it usually comes from the exact same factory. It’s just a false sense of choice so stores can look like they’ve got options

nivenkos , to technology in Virtual pet website Neopets plans $4m comeback

I liked how Neopets let you learn a lot with a fake currency just earnt from mini-games.

So like you could learn a lot about how auctions work, but without risking your real money.

I learnt the basics of hacking video games by hacking the minigames to win much faster.

I guess the closest thing nowadays would be Roblox, but it’s a shame how it’s all tied to real money transactions.

TheRealKuni ,

One of the games was a “hide the marble under one of three cups, follow the cup, then guess where it is” thing. On the highest difficulty it would give very high rewards but it was almost impossible to follow.

However, I used to play on a school computer that was ancient. It couldn’t play the flash animation at full speed, so I would watch it slowly move the cups around, easily follow, and get it right every time. When playing at home I would lose, but at school I nailed it.

SkyeStarfall ,

The commercialization of everything does suck. Things aren’t as much for fun as they used to be on the internet.

Roblox would have been such a great and wonderful game… if it just weren’t so terribly exploitative of kids for their own commercial gain.

They’re still investing this? I wonder why they keep this case open while presumably closing many other unsolved cases throughout the years.

tDSpPd2C9MrT8n ,

It’s not uncommon for cases to just be left open for decades, and it is common for cases that have been left open for decades to be randomly picked back up when some new method of investigation can be used or new evidence found, sometimes leading to arrests for crimes comitted even 40 years ago.

lechatron ,
