franglais , to news in Chamoli: Fifteen electrocuted to death near India river

Electrocution is fatal, electrified is non fatal.

macrocephalic ,

Killed… To death!

ericisshort ,

Some sources including Wikipedia define electrocution as “death or serious injury caused by electric shock.” However “electrify” is rarely if ever used to describe any sort of electric shock. It’s more used to describe a line or material that has electric voltage and/or current running through it.

franglais ,

Correct, some sources do say that, in BrE we say electric shock, perhaps in AmE electrocution is a generic term, but that’s bizzare, the word is a amalgamation of electricity and execution, since when is execution non lethal? In french we use électrisé and electrocutes to make the distinction.

ericisshort ,

A lot of words evolve beyond their etymological origin and aren’t 1:1 between languages, so it’s never good to assume a word that appears to be the same in another language has exactly the same meaning. To my knowledge, electrify is never used in either British or American English to describe unintentionally shocking a person with electricity. Electrocution on the other hand is commonly used to describe electric shock whether or not it was intentional or causes death.

Nothing to see, just a criminal state doing criminal things.

taladar , to worldnews in Watch: Fiery crash as passenger train ploughs into truck in Indonesia

I disagree with the framing in the headline. Usually with these kinds of crashes it is the road vehicle that is at fault, the train is merely subject to basic physics (not being able to see around curves, heavy things unable to stop,…). Here it says the truck had broken down on the tracks but how likely is that explanation really considering very few vehicles break down in such a way that you only notice the breakdown meters from where the vehicle comes to a stop (i.e. if the breakdown starts on the tracks you would still be able to roll off, if it starts before you could break before the tracks).

Communists are completely delusional people with an extremely selective understanding of history of the past 100 years. I would feel sorry for you if you were not a serious risk on humanity. Your only virtue is that you hate nazis, everything else about you is just bad.

Please educate yourself out of that mess.

vegai ,

It sounds like you don’t like Nazis.

Nazis might just be the only distinctive group of humans I have never met that I hate. The feeling is quite a lot stronger than against communists which is more like a practical worry. Communists are (often) fine as people I think, they just think very wrongly and want to guide societies into harmful directions. Nazis in comparison are usually very fucked as individuals, even though some turn back from it.

Yet you support Ukraine. How does that work? How do you manage the contradiction in your mind?

This works trivially in the way that Ukraine is not a nazi country and therefore there is no contradiction.

Blursty ,
@Blursty@lemmygrad.ml avatar

This works trivially in the way that Ukraine is not a nazi country and therefore there is no contradiction.

I believe you’re operating under a misapprehension there. The current state is based on a Nazi led coup and has long ago suspended democracy, banned and imprisoned opposition and engaged in all manner of oppression of minorities. Historically Ukraine

This was well publicised in the media before 2014 when the Obama regime’s coup overthrew Ukraine’s sovereignty and illegally emplaced a puppet government. The Rada rejected the appointment but the US ingored that and appointed Yatsenyuk anyway.

It’s understandable that you don’t know this because we’re all saturated in extreme levels of propaganda from a media in fear of being Assanged.

Yes, it is unfortunate. A lot of people believe the news these days and think they’re getting the full picture. Those of us who had heard of Ukraine before the coup and invasion remember the truth about Ukraine. I’m sorry to have to break this to you but you’ve been lied to and manipulated by the media throughout this war. If you’re not already aware of Ukraine’s Nazi problem then this is going to shock you.

In what way is any of this pro-Russia? Is reality pro-Russian? It’s just anti-Nazi. I thought you didn’t like Nazis?

That article looks broken, it just stops here:

What is the Azov movement?

The West’s Azov obsession and the inability to properly understand the overall phenomenon has even led to the spread of damaging anti-Ukraine propaganda in the media.

Certainly, the Azov movement is a dangerous key player of the transnational extreme right.

That’s it. Maybe you have another link?

vegai , (edited )

In what way is any of this pro-Russia? Is reality pro-Russian? It’s just anti-Nazi. I thought you didn’t like Nazis?

No, I’m saying that what you are spreading here is pro-Russian propaganda and not actually reality. The purpose of that propaganda seems to be to muddy the waters around the actual issue: Russian aggression on a sovereign nation.

Blursty ,
@Blursty@lemmygrad.ml avatar

But this is a defensive operation? How is it aggression? This is American propaganda you’re repeating. Do you think all those images are photoshopped or something?

What do you have to say about the mainstream news coverage of Ukraine after the Obama regime’s Nazi led overthrow of Ukraine’s democracy?

NATO, the most aggressive military alliance on the planet was threatening Russia for years before they finally invaded. Their fascist puppet state was threatening Russia with nukes. What do you think the US would do if China had Mexico as a puppet state and was threatening to install nukes on America’s border? Would America’s inevitable invasion be aggressive?

Hey man, you don’t need to admit it to me, a complete stranger online, but be honest with yourself.

vegai , (edited )

But this is a defensive operation?

Are you calling Russia’s attack a defensive operation? How can you work with that contradiction against actual facts in your mind?

I don’t know if you’re willingly spreading Russian propaganda or just a victim of it, but if it’s the latter then you need to read something beyond your bubble.

Blursty ,
@Blursty@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I think you already know that this was explained in my comment already.

The fact that you’re unwilling to engage with the points made is saying a lot. Like I said already though, it’s fine with me if you don’t want to admit it to me, we all have an ego. But be honest with yourself. You know you’re being lied to. It takes courage to face up to the fact that the world we live in is full of propaganda and lies and we in the west are the bad guys.

vegai ,

Well, this is interesting in the way that I’m able to say to you exactly what you told me. And apparently both of think we’re in the right. You should also be courageous and see behind the obvious propaganda that you’re happily feeding on. You’re being lied to and the west is actually the more benevolent party in this. That is not to say that the west is always the benevolent party in every war and conflict, but in this one we definitely are.

This is basically why I suggested earlier that this discussion has no point.

nivenkos , to technology in Virtual pet website Neopets plans $4m comeback

I liked how Neopets let you learn a lot with a fake currency just earnt from mini-games.

So like you could learn a lot about how auctions work, but without risking your real money.

I learnt the basics of hacking video games by hacking the minigames to win much faster.

I guess the closest thing nowadays would be Roblox, but it’s a shame how it’s all tied to real money transactions.

TheRealKuni ,

One of the games was a “hide the marble under one of three cups, follow the cup, then guess where it is” thing. On the highest difficulty it would give very high rewards but it was almost impossible to follow.

However, I used to play on a school computer that was ancient. It couldn’t play the flash animation at full speed, so I would watch it slowly move the cups around, easily follow, and get it right every time. When playing at home I would lose, but at school I nailed it.

SkyeStarfall ,

The commercialization of everything does suck. Things aren’t as much for fun as they used to be on the internet.

Roblox would have been such a great and wonderful game… if it just weren’t so terribly exploitative of kids for their own commercial gain.

These failures “should not be viewed as rare anomalies, but rather as systemic weaknesses that if not remedied, are likely to result in future harm to children in CBP custody,”

So in actuality her death wasn’t preventable. It could have been if the system was something else than what it is, but it isn’t and likely won’t be.

BrikoX OP ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

Mr Wise’s report stated that border patrol staff were told about her medical condition when she arrived at the site where she was held in Harlington, Texas. But that information was not passed on to other agents, he wrote.

Both can be true at the same time.

So, again, her death would have been preventable if the system was different and staffed by different people, which it isn’t.

Or just if in the existing system they just talked to their damn collegues and relayed the medical information they were provided.
