More than 90% of emperor penguin colonies are predicted to be all but extinct by the end of the century, as the continent’s seasonal sea-ice withers in an ever-warming world.
But the research team watched as sea-ice under emperor rookeries fragmented in November, before thousands of chicks had had time to fledge the slick feathers needed for swimming.
Antarctic summer sea-ice has been on a sharp downturn since 2016, with the total area of frozen water around the continent diminishing to new record lows.
Between 2018 and 2022, roughly a third of the more than 60 known emperor penguin colonies were affected in some way by diminished sea-ice extent - whether that’s ice forming later in the season or breaking up earlier.
She links the causes for the current decline to anomalously warm ocean water around the continent and a particular pattern of winds, which in the case of the Bellingshausen, has pushed ice back towards the coast, making it difficult to spread.
Currently, emperors are classified as “Near Threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the organisation that keeps the lists of Earth’s most endangered animals.
The original article contains 766 words, the summary contains 190 words. Saved 75%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Do I have to point out that this title is misleading? Don’t get me wrong, I’d be glad if it were true… one less child killer roaming the world but if you read the article it hasn’t been confirmed by western sources he was on that plane.
It’s not a racism thing. It’s an “I don’t trust the fucking kremlin” thing. Russian state media does not have a good track record of reporting the facts fully and honestly–for a long time, not just the last year and a half.
Where else could he be? The West wouldn’t let him cross, while any ally of Russia would cooperate with Putin. Not that it even has to be an ally after all the assassinations in Europe.
South American countries are on good terms with Putin, being some of the few that let any Russian enter visa-free. Taking him out would be almost as easy in those countries.
South America is a big place with lots of nooks and crannies and different cultures to hide in and blend with.
I’m sure someone as wealthy as Prigo could’ve lived a very modest lifestyle without ever having to work again and staying incognito for the rest of his days in South America. If South America is really too dangerous (it isn’t) then he also has Asia. There are so many options for rich people it’s insane.
Selenskyj was right: Prigozhin will be dead after two months. And he isn’t the only hardliner. I think within the last month six out of ten of the hardest hardliners fell out of the window. Or out of the sky.
Seems like Putin is currently liquidating the hardliners so there will be no negative feed back when he ends his “special operation” in a couple of weeks. Message at home will be: Wow, we did great, nobody objects and the world is in awe! And who disagrees will find an open window to jump through…
I am not saying he is ending it. I say he will try to prepare to end it without getting removed from power, to get away with a black eye. He might offer some sort of shady deal which Ukraine rightfully will reject. And finally he will end the operation, not getting most of his demands. But as he had all his hardliners removed he can still claim whatever he wants. Because not the winner but the person in charge decides what the truth is.
I’m fully expecting Russian media to explain how those evil Ukranians sneaked a missile battery or a fighter jet into Moscow airspace and shot down a plane that just happened to contained Putin’s mortal enemies.
I think it’s usually Ukrainian media making those spurious claims, like about that Russian prison that got hit or, idk, I think there was a pipeline or something that was blown up they instantly blamed on Russia
I think that was western media, when that one Russian pipeline blew up and they were all saying it was Russia who blew it up, like lmao why would they blow up their own infrastructure that was actively generating them revenue? It was very clearly blown up by either Ukraine or NATO to force the EU to use less Russian gas or whatever.
Sorry, I was being facetious there. Yes, it was the Nord Stream pipeline that Russia used to sell gas to Europe, which was 4 lines, of which 3 were destroyed. My joke was that the pipeline was all over the news (along with those accusations) for a good while, unlike the prison bombing which was basically a one-cycle story.
I sincerely hope that for people who rely on these cable cars that this doesn’t merely bring attention to their issue, but funding and engineers to construct and operate reliable cable car services. I don’t know what the costs are, but I cannot imagine they are so expensive that this problem can be neglected any further for the people who endured this or others who have to put up with something similar.
Based on witness testimony, when he arrived to wreckage, found people were moving bodies from wreckage, sounds like someone wanted visual confirmation.
At the same time, Grey Zone reported that a second business jet owned by Prigozhin had landed safely in the Moscow region.
Perhaps not gone.
However from memory they shot down some air force stuff on their way up during the mini mutiny, so I could see the Russian Air Force having it out for him.
