Looking forward for this, hopefully they’ll also bring the ability to customize single app icons.

When the f*#& is Nvidia going to release a new shield tv? This is what the people actually want.

daddy32 , to android in Google TV Streamer review: The new 'big hub' of your home

Yeah, no. Anything from google won’t be anything Big in my home.

mindlight , (edited ) to android in Google TV Streamer review: The new 'big hub' of your home

've been an Android user since I got my first Samsung Galaxy S3 and getting ads on the standard launcher on my Philips Android TV was one step too much.

Google will start showing ads in the launcher sooner or later. I might be paying more money for the Apple equivalent, but they aren’t as hostile to their users as Google are.

@Emptiness@lemmy.world avatar

The alternative launchers available for set top boxes are pretty good. Biggest feature is they’re completely ad-less.

I use Flauncher. It works pretty well and is a simple grid of icons. With some ADB commands it can be set as default, which I did on my Shield

CallMeButtLove ,

100% they’ll start showing ads.

They’ll also start paring features out of the device as soon as it’s convenient for them, like they did with the OnHub as soon as Google Home devices launched. I’m still salty about the OnHub, they flat out neutered a multifunction device down to a big WiFi AP because they just didn’t want people using any of the smart home or speaker functionality once they had other products to sell.

smeg ,

Amusingly the old Android TV Chromecast (or whatever stupid name they gave it) was actually one of the better boxes for customisability. You could side-load apps so could install a custom (ad-free) launcher and 3rd-party clients like smarttube. You couldn’t really get much better than that without running something like a proper Linux OS on a RPi.

Hoping this one will be similarly OK for tinkering (not that I need a replacement any time soon!)

OZFive , to android in Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Review: The one we've been waiting for all along

Now if we can just have a decent case that is…

  • Not slippery
  • Adds SOME drop protection
  • Has Mag-Safe
  • Has Mag-Safe positioned correctly
  • Stays on without too much adhesive
  • Looks halfway decent /allows the phone’s design to be seen

I would be happy.

And the network is still garbage.

skullgiver , to android in Google Calendar for Android will let you manually add birthdays
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

I wonder what this will look like when integrating with other apps. I don’t think there’s a standard ical type for birthdays, for instance.

I can’t really say I can find a use for this feature (all the birthdays I need to remember are in my contacts too) but I guess it’s useful if you just want to jot down someone’s birthday but not their name or phone number?

soulfirethewolf , to android in Xiaomi confirms global launch for foldable Mix Flip as it briefly overtakes Apple

A global launch for the Xiaomi Mix Flip means the device will make its way to markets outside of China, such as countries in Europe. A US launch is not expected.

Not much of a global launch then

bokster ,

Well, it’s similar to how American bands go on a “World tour” which includes 30 US cities and maybe London and Paris, if they have a good day.

Not to be sarcastic, but ‘global’, ‘world’ and similar terms seem to be in the eye of the beholder. 🤨

trolololol ,

Na that’s just plain old lying

Ilandar ,

The US is a single country. Europe is a continent with 50+ countries. Whether or not the phone releases in a single country does not determine how “global” the launch is.

EddoWagt ,

The US is quite a large country though… Approximately the size and population of all European countries combined. Calling it a continent wouldn’t be too far off

DarkThoughts , to android in Google Calendar for Android will let you manually add birthdays

Just add them as an event that repeats yearly.

It took them years to finally add reminders for the birthdays (and similar special dates) in the contact app.

solrize , to android in Google Calendar for Android will let you manually add birthdays

Rat out my friends by telling Google their DOB? Will they also add a field for mothers’ maiden name? No thanks.

Chewy7324 ,

They already have your birthday (and maiden name) through your friends’ contacts.

Being able to add birtdays manually is definitely useful, altough I believe it’s better and more organized to add them through contacts. (Not that I actually use Google contacts/calendar.)

jol , to android in Google Calendar for Android will let you manually add birthdays

Oh uau. How would I have remembered birthdays until now since 15 years ago?

ohwhatfollyisman , to android in Google Calendar for Android will let you manually add birthdays

why is this news, though? before contacts integration was a thing i created yearly-repeat events for birthdays of family and close friends.

i now get reminded twice! once for my manually-created entry and once more for the contact integration.

clay_pidgin ,

… It never occurred to me to put birthdays in the contacts. I’ve only got recurring events!

Appoxo ,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Same here. Why should I do both…?

clay_pidgin ,

I guess putting them in the contacts is simpler, and automatically comes up. Presumably it’s one click from the calendar reminder to the contact so you can call/text them.

Dunno, not a big deal either way.

MrsDoyle ,

Same here! I feel like we should get paid for giving Google this fantastic idea.
