user224 , to technology in The retro Nokia phone everyone owned 25 years ago will get a reboot soon – and yes, it has Snake

I’d rather like smartphone in a different package.
Like so:

I don’t think they still make such phones though.

If possible, bookmark 68k.news and frogfind.com on those phones.

Eeh, they already did it with nokia 3310 and 8110 in 2018.
So I guess it still seems worth it.

As a sidenote, what the fuck, that was 6 years ago?

user224 , to asklemmy in How long is one obligated to keep a kid’s gift?

how long before you’re not offended to find out it’s been chucked?

If it’s the kid’s decision, personally, 0 seconds. Though, in that case, if it were just to be thrown away* I’d rather take it back and return it or resell it, perhaps even just for symbolic value so that it isn’t wasted.
This is true for everyone. It’s stupid to hoard useless gifts. But then again, I also consider gifts a bad idea all together.

*If the kid says he wants to sell it to someone, exchange it, gift it,… , that’s reasonable.

If it’s the parent’s decision, infinite time, unless it is rightfully** ruled the gift was inappropriate ^(sorry)^.

**E.g.: “He’s too old to have plushies.” is not reasonable.

user224 , to news in AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing | Ars Technica

I also don’t have much knowledge here, but I don’t think much.

I guess the wavelength differences on HF and below would be too large for something of larger bandwidth. And anyway, the AM broadcast bands aren’t that large anyway. Plus there would still be too much RFI from foreign broadcasts.

My idea is, it could perhaps be upgraded to DRM. But this is used very rarely since it requires DRM-compatible receivers.
But personally, I don’t think this would be a better idea than AM. Having to get new receivers for over-compressed digital audio? Nah.

Second, probably not the best idea, some of those could be license-free bands. E.g. for LoRa. Imagine Meshtastic on HF.

user224 , to asklemmy in When did you get your first phone? First computer? What was it?

Phone, probably in 2012 or 2013: Sony Ericsson W200i.

Proper computer in 2020: (Laptop) eMachines e627. A very slow AMD Athlon 64 powered laptop. It broke after 2 months of use. It’s what got me to Linux. I barely got any understanding of what OS is, less so a difference between Linux and Windows, but I needed one. I found the UI of Windows 10 too complicated, so I went with Linux Mint 20 MATE.
Of course, that is only after learning what “distribution” is.
My ass was trying to find “just Linux”.

Thankfully, it already had Windows installed (used, unclean, untrusted, potentially unsafe to use) and I managed to dig out some DVD-RW which used to have some cartoon on it. Of course I had 0 flash drives.

For the reference, I am 18 now.

user224 , to asklemmy in How did you meet the love of your life?

Well, I didn’t…
And looking at where I am heading, I probably won’t either. However, it is certainly positive, in some way, not for me, but the other person. I am not a good person.

user224 , to asklemmy in How did you meet the love of your life?

This is the perfect love GNU+Linux story.

user224 , to technology in Microsoft and IBM make MS-DOS 4.00 Open-Source

Great.
This should be the standard for old retired software.

user224 , (edited ) to asklemmy in Why is it that we get nervous around our crushes?

I think it could be being scared of doing something wrong subconsciously.

But what do I have to say here? I can barely speak to a cashier after 30 minutes of thinking what precisely to say and building up the courage, even if it’s just “Hello. … I’ll pay by card.”
