I've Installed multiple Linux Distros on my Editing Rig to see how well Davinci Resolve Studio works. Here are the results.

So a couple of weeks ago, I made this post asking for help from those who used Linux and Davinci Resolve, and their experience. To those who’s response was effectively “I use arch btw”, I hear you, but that wasn’t the question I wanted to ask....

@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Well there wasn’t much to say. Other than importing videos requires you to extract the audio first in pcm/mp3 or making a new container. The editing experience is the same for my use case.

I experienced no hick ups before resolve made me wait a week before I can use it again. The only issue I have is that there is no Title Bar so closing and minimizing resovle isn’t straight forward.

Edit: I was more preoccupied with whether or not Resolve would boot.

So if there was anything specific you’d like to know I can check it out and report back.

Its more Ubuntu is king since its the most popular. Mint is riding on their coattails as experienced with the DE distro.

Don’t get me wrong though. Its a very good distro for newbies.

Making the iso was never an issue but its always food to know.

My distain toward Fedora is IBM/fedoras obstinate to not deliver non-FOSS apps in the official repos. I understand their decision. But forcing users rely on third party projects like RPM Fusion to use non free apps doesn’t feel like a good solution.

If Fedora offered out of the box or an easy method to enable this I wouldn’t have an issue. Even dnf can be forgiven if it didn’t ask so much from the end user.

That’s what I did the first install and it borked my install. Most troubleshooting said it was a TPM thing, but nothing I tried could recover the desktop so I had to resinstall.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I have a personal distain towards Ubuntu which is why its not installed. With that said, I didn’t install POP_OS because it didn’t have Cinnamon. That said I see it on the same level as Mint since it includes an easy co fig and setup.

I’ve just spent too much time configuring Pop to look like Windows that I just cut the BS and install Cinnamon/KDE plasma and aim for distros that support it.

I am currently using a NVMe to USB-C adapter right now. And while loading is reminding me a bit of the early 2010’s, it’s fast enough to play games on it. I am aware that there are NVMe to PCI adapter, I’m just being cheap. Though when I hit the point of editing I’ll probably move over to that.

If you’re still considering it, you can get it for like $10-$15 on GOG. Same price of steam but DRM Free, and it’s almost always onsale.

For those wondering if this is under exaggerated, it’s not. Now my experience is on the Switch.

This issues I saw in my time before I got refunded was as follow. Texture Flickering and Shadow Flickering (hard to see as a screen shot so this is the worse I saw)

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/08206a09-a6e3-49ee-8143-3663bff5f81f.png

Textures that are still in 4:3 and not 16:9

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b7b25934-dcd0-4685-b4ca-348adb7cb85b.png

Random Texture floating when they shouldn’t be

The lighting failing on the Bridges on the Naboo Map

And the FMV’s being so compressed you can see the compression artifacting (and this is a game that ~34GB)

Ditto, I sadly didn’t go online so no comment there. Well I mean I tried once and I couldn’t connect so I just jumped into instant action. But yeah the storage requirements are a bit unrealistic on Switch. I don’t think you can even play it on OG switch without a Micro SD Card.

The controls are “fine” for the most part. If you were on an Xbox controller it would work. Space Battles in Battlefront II are an improvement, but the same treatment was never made to Battlefront 1. If I had to complain about anything, it’s that the auto aim needs to be more sensitive and when you blast an enemy it auto locks on them like the console games. Mouse and keyboard this would be annoying but on controller it’s necessary.

the16bitgamer ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

This is on iOS. There is no Firefox (geko) or Chromium, there is only skins of Safari so your point is moot. For now.

Planning on moving over from Windows 10 to Linux for my Personal Work Station. Can't decide which OS I should switch to.

Windows has been a thorn in my side for years. But ever since I started moved to Linux on my Laptop and swapping my professional software to a cross platform alternative, I’ve been dreaming on removing it from my SSD....

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

For the DE I’ve settled on Cinnamon. I like KDE plasma, but it’s missing features, gnome has everthing but I don’t like its interface.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Is there much different between MX and Debain Stable it’s built on?

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

For me it was two issues. The first was its online account integration, never saw my calendar on my desktop and the community work around didn’t work.

The other issue was when your desktop was resized the icons would be rearranged. So if I plugged my laptop into a monitor I had to rearrange everything.

Outside of that is my person grips with most KDE software and rough edges.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I don’t like Ubuntu, but unlike this community it’s more an in general distaste for the OS than anything specific.

the16bitgamer OP , (edited )
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I have an arch in a bum VM (stupid apple auto correct) to toy with new release like this. KDE 6 feels like KDE 5 with some slight tweaks.

Doesn’t sound like praise but considering how buggy KDE was in Wayland before this is a massive improvement. Still not my cup of tea and Libre Office still has issues with separate icons in the task bar.in Wayland.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

While I have my own personal gripes with it, it’s has one of the most robust GUI configurations I’ve seen in any Linux distos. As someone who doesn’t want downtime having a gui for things like Kernel config and systemd, Manjaro has its perks.

Doesn’t outweigh breaking my build for touching AUR, but ther is a reason I consider it.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

My issue with just choosing debain is I don’t know if I’m sacrificing Resolve compatibility by choosing it.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why it’s on this list, but I’m more looking to see if Resolve has issue with it.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

That was my consensus with software like Lutris and adding Wine’s packages

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I’d like to do this, but honestly I don’t have the spare storage to let me do this on my desktop. So I’d be cracking it open to swap drives and that’ll be a hassle.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

That’s my two cents using mint. Though getting some software like xpadneo required me to build from source.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Did you install Resolve via AUR or from their installer? How was updating the software? Did you find the performance in fusion to be worse in Linux or in par to Windows?

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I just added the FreeCAD repos to my OS. Still working out AppImages and how to “install” them to my OS like an application rather then a portable exe.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve given this advice in the past too. I’m probably sticking with Cinnamon, which is why Mint is in the options.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I knew I cast a wide net when I posted here. Wasn’t looking for which distros were best, but rather common pitfalls in this communities zeitgeist, as well as the 1 or two users who actually use the software I am using and any issues that they came across.

For example Fedora was high on my list of potentials before it was pointed out that it has issues with Nvidia’s drivers. As I am looking for minimal down time/setup it dropped on my list.

I also heard from someone who is using it on Arch which means I have a fallback if my distros of choice fails.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Gnome (default) has it’s place for someone who doesn’t want a conventional desktop environment or doesn’t like the contemporaries desktop look a likes. But man, I’m 20+ years of using Windows and it’s the way I like my Desktop Environments.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I though that was the case. But honestly I’ll take a flatpak over appimage since I can get those auto updates. I like appimages for those one off programs like Etcher where I need it for 30 seconds and never again for several months. But it would be so nice to have them as a part of an installable process.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

If I’m going mint I’m going mint De since I dislike ubuntu for personal reason

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly your feedback was what I was looking for. While I could trial and error this myself, I would like to skip the hassle if possible.

From what it sounds like, while Debain is stable as a OS, but it might be a lot of trouble to install Resolve. Thank you for the link for the makeresolvedeb project, didn’t know this existed, and I find it funny how Black Magic is trying to treat linux like WIndows.

I was hoping I could avoid Arch, but it does sound like the safest bet for getting it to work.

I can probably dig around and see if Resolve works well in OpenSuse. But from the lack of Forum and debate around it, I am guessing it’s niche.

Welp my install order doesn’t change, but I now have a new challenge. Don’t update the live image packages, install resolve, then update the system. If Resolve lives I can keep the distro.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think the 64GB of leftover space is enough XD

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I use Bauh on my VM Endeavor install. Compared to using the terminal it’s amazing, but it feels limited. For example I can’t install multiple packages at once it I can with other distro’s gui.

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I bought Resolve Studio when I switched over from Vegas. I’ve been planning this move for a while.

Handbrake if u are still having issues

the16bitgamer OP ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I didn’t expect the neighbour 3 doors down with their lifted pickup to show up. But it’s all fun, until someone mentions German cars and how unreliable they are when they start breaking down and how they’ve always been bad.

I got my answer eventually, but it’s sad the OpenSuse guys didn’t show. But that just shows how many people use their distro.

Also I am shocked anyone can find my channel, and happy you’ve enjoyed it. I made a video about ditching Windows and how 11 policies sucks, and would love to do more. But when I try the script becomes dull so I scrap it. Hoping there’s content when I eventually try this but Series 9 first.

@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I think you should find games first. No point in owning an NES without finding something to play on it. But if you are looking for opinion on the hardware itself.

I own all 3 systems.

Atari 7800: isn’t fare to compare it to a NES or Master System. Think of it as a suped up 2600. Great system if you use the European controller or a Sega 9pin controller. Game selection is good but limited. Best way to play 2600 games. Rf only sucks but can be modded. I’d get it if there are 2600 or 7800 games you wanna play. But the Atari 50th collection has pretty much everything you’d want to play on it.

NES: is a good system for the time, but hasn’t aged well. Getting games to work has turned into a ritual for me. But when they work you’ll have access to the best games from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Controller has aged like fine wine. Most of its non-nintendo library can be found elsewhere for cheap while the Nintendo games are behind a subscription service. Not many games exclusive these days but worth playing anyways

Master System: the NES we have at home. Mostly a similar library of games to the NES but are sometimes better, sometimes worse. Depends on the publisher. In north america it was forgotten and game selection was limited. Controller is mushy but a genesis controller can fix that.

Out of the 3 the master system is probably the best experience, but the NES has the best games.

the16bitgamer ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

In North America the NES isn’t a top loader and due to the mechanism they used the pins ware out, especially after 35-40 years. On top of that there is very little in the NES Library that’s only on the NES these days. If I hadn’t already invested in an NES and games, I’d just get the NES Classic and be done with it. If I wanted extra games I’d get collections like the Castlevaina Collection, The Mega Man one, and Disney Afternoon. You can extract the ROMs from these collections and put them on the NES Classic if you are willing to fiddle.

Meanwhile the master system is often times forgotten, but has a similar library for third party games. And what unique games does have are rarely found elsewhere as the master system version. Let alone the European releases like Sonic the Hedgehog.

With that said, I prefaced this with “Find games first” for a reason. The master system has a smaller library of games, and if OP was looking for games more like Dragon Quest Warrior or Final Fantasy, then a system with only Phantasy Star would be a bad choice.

Help deciding Os

Hi, I’m learning python and I have purchased a 2015 MacBook air. I want to install Linux on it (Ubuntu) but my friend who’s a developer told me to leave the MacOs because they are similar as operative systems. What do you think? Should I change the os and switch to Linux? Thanks. Edit: thank you for your replies. There are...

the16bitgamer ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar
  1. Mac OS uses Unix, Linux is Unix Like. At the core their structure’s are the same
  2. however despite being the same they have different software packages.

The question you need to ask yourself is: does MacOS have the software I need to do what I want?

For me I need Xcode for iOS development, so that is a yes. But for you, perhaps you may prefer the Python packages on Linux. Or the ease which new software can be installed.

However regardless on what is better or not, know that you can always re-install MacOS afterwords. Macs have a recovery mode that let’s you wipe the ssd and reinstall. I used it when I upgraded my 2015 Mac from 128GB to 1TB.

the16bitgamer ,
@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

I tried to buy physical PC games as recently as 2014, and what i got was a steam code and and 8 DVD’s, and the game still needed a patch to work. So Physical on PC games to me is DRM free. I can put it on my own thumbdrive/USB to make it physical if I wanted it to be.

As for my preference. It depends on the game and deal. If I know I want the game, and I’ll buy it no matter what, then I’ll aim for the DRM Free copy.

Otherwise it depends on the sale. I mean for $3 I don’t mind loosing access to SimCity 3000, $3 is a good price even for limited access. Let alone free.

What I refuse to buy is a offline game like GTA 5 that requires a proprietary launcher and account to even play. Here I will just abandon PC gaming entirely and go to consoles. Rock Star, Ubisoft, EA games in particular I primarily buy on consoles.
