- finally got to "the modem world," @kdriscoll's brilliant lost history of the early internet & pre-WWW BBS multiverse, & how its forgotten protocols made non-corporate spaces for both (s) & unaffiliated users. if you're into and/or (& how the present reflects it), i recommend. it might be the most mastodonian book ever? also, the title font does proustian things to me. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300248142/the-modem-world/ @bookstodon

"The fediverse is not only an opportunity for social networking on different terms—it can also be seen as a new beginning for social network research, part of a new relationship between academia and its research subject." https://doi.org/10.1016/j.patter.2023.100914 #X @science

Seeing users on Fediverse as the subject is against the idea of Fediverse itself. They are not here for the interest of academia, and once they realize that they becomes the target to be exploited, they will resist to be the subject no matter what it takes.

Respecting them and recognizing them more than just the research subject is the first step for the new beginning as the author claims.
