It hasn’t worked for a while. Even a year ago it was considerably better.

I can’t believe it, but Bing is now the better search engine. What is happening to the world?!

What would be more helpful I think would be a “hide post” option.

That way you could hide stuff you’re not interested in, or posts you have already read. (Something good from reddit)

As others have suggested maybe having a sub for trending news, that might be good actually. That way people can easily sub and unsub to this stuff without having to worry. (An on-going catch all for this kind of news, I think it would be better than focussing on a single current topic)

I have never purchased a legit Lenovo battery, but I purchased a generic battery for my thinkpad T430 on Amazon.

There were a few generic seller brands, but this is in North America. I’m not sure if European Amazon offers the same options, but it’s worth a look.

There need to be laws to establish protections of voice work for this reason. Any commercial use of an actor’s voice should require compenstation.

Yes!! Chromebooks have so much potential.

I have a cheapo 2016 acer Chromebook still going strong with Gallium OS. (An ubuntu based distro geared at low spec chromebooks.)

What a nightmarish waste of time.

Also I can see kids outsmarting this thing in two seconds. Just wear a fake beard, a bit of makeup. Boom, Adult.

Seeing the care that went into designing the original logo, only to be replaced with… I keep wanting to call it clipart, but clipart is less lazy than this.

Yes. Excellent!

There used to be an extension that replaced trump images with cats. Can we also replace pictures of the rich (and famous) with images of baby animals? I don’t need to keep seeing their dumb faces everywhere.

If you feel so strongly about warmongering, you should be just as against this as you are against other nations doing the same thing.

You can be opposed to America’s military industrial complex and this at the same time - unless you are deliberately trying to downplay the violence against Ukraine for some reason.

‘World Of Warcraft’ Players Trick AI-Scraping Games Website Into Publishing Nonsense (www.forbes.com)

A website called zleague.gg has been scraping Reddit threads, feeding them into an AI and publishing auto-generated summaries without proper oversight. World of Warcraft players on Reddit noticed this and created a fake thread about a made-up feature called Glorbo to trick the AI. The AI then published an article summarizing the...

Ive noticed in a lot of the ios games my kid plays, loot boxes are gone. But they’ve been replaced with spinner wheels that work like slot machines. You can spend more in game currency to increase your odds of winning loot.

This feels especially insidious in games aimed at kids.

This is one of the better articles I’ve read on this subject, but there’s still an underlying message of “joining Meta is inevitable since all online platforms want to be the biggest at any cost” - which I don’t think is the case with the Fediverse.

There are also lots of knock off cartridges for most laser printers too.

I have a brother laser printer copier - it works with budget cartridges that cost around $25.

I get wanting to go paper free, but I like to have paper copies of important docs in my file cabinet.

Also i have an eight year old, so its fun to be able to print out papercrafts, patterns, exercises etc … having a printer is a good thing to have for a kid.

People keep taking issue with this articles use of “summarizing” and linking to wikipedia… Summaries of copyrighted work are obviously not illegal.

This article is oversimplified and does a crummy job of explaining the problem. Ars Technica does a much better job explaining the problem.

The fact that the ai can summarize these works in detail is proof that they were trained using copyrighted material without permission, (which is not fair use) Sarah Silverman is obviously not going to be hurt financially by this, but there are hundreds of thousands of authors who definitely will be affected. They have every right to sue.

storksforlegs , (edited )
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

You make a lot of excellent points, but I think the main issue of contention is just using copyrighted work to train generative AI without the author’s permission regardless.

If they did ask permission, there would be no problem. But an author or artist should be given the choice if their work is going to be used to train an AI.

storksforlegs ,
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

Well yeah, art is made to be consumed by people.
And all art is inspired by other art. People write scifi books after reading other scifi books etc Thats not the issue here.

The issue is artists should be able to opt out of having their work taken and fed into a big project they have no control over.

storksforlegs ,
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

there is already lots of evidence that they have scraped copyrighted art and photographs for their datasets.

@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

There is already a well established practise of getting permission in academic settings for reprinting written work/journal articles/etc. etc. And all published authors and academics understand that their work will be read, maybe used in an academic setting, summarized, debated, discussed, quoted, etc. Getting permission is definitely a thing in academia.

storksforlegs ,
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

Ah, I misunderstood. Sorry, I thought you meant for reprinting since that involved copyright. (Like providing readers or … whatever those bound copied texts are that profs hand out. Do they still do that? haha) But you’re right, if it’s just reading or discussing you don’t need permission for that.

Also I want to clarify that I’m not against AI or machine learning generally, I just think creators need to be asked first before their work is given to any LLM, since it’s the owners of the LLMs who profit from their use, not the creators whose work helped grow it. That’s all I’m saying. I know AI’s isn’t going anywhere, and it can be used for a lot of great things. I just wish there were more protections for creators and their work, and that its growth was a little more ethical.

I know news media is losing money fast, but if this is the solution they go with, I think it will have the opposite effect. People who still read the news are sure as hell going to stop paying if this becomes the norm. If they think readership is declining, how is spamming a mass of AI generated junk going to help?

storksforlegs ,
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

If you like Katamari Damacy you should try ps1 game called “Incredible Crisis”.

It is an extreme wacky minigame… game, one of those games that is simultaneously addictive and punishingly difficult. You play as four members of a japanese family trying to get home for grandma’s birthday, and insanity ensues. (Aliens, bank robbers, etc).

It got an english release back in 1999 but I dont think it made a huge mark. In any case, its very fun and ridiculous. Especially good to play with friends. It also has an amazing ska soundtrack by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra if you enjoy ska, haha

    What games are you talking about? I think this would make more sense if you used examples to illustrate your points here.

    Also, lots of these problems arent sounding like stuff I encounter in well-written games.

    Has anyone tried using it? What was your experience?

    The phone is such a good idea, I really hope it is compatible with carriers here in Canada.

    Honestly, just last night I was trying to replace the battery in an old Samsung phone, an A5. (For my son to play with, for making lego stop motions, videos etc.) So I bought a battery and repair kit. How hard could it be?

    I’m sure it was designed to never be repaired or opened. Replacing the battery required me to totally dismantle my phone, then hopefully reassemble correctly. However the whole thing was so filled with glue and this proved to be impossible.

    It was a really nice little phone. So ticked off with how stupid and disposable the design ended up being.

    Nope.

    He’s a hardcore capitalist, albeit one who happens to support free software (probably because he believes in it, but also because it means a bigger user base for his platform and $$$)

    He’s significantly more likeable than most of the other CEO billionaires but when you look at his peers that isnt too hard.

    I know there are already people working on creating AI filters, to filter out spam articles and other AI-created content.

    I’d pay for that, it’ll be the new adblocker. Fuck any company that does this.

    Can we go really old with these?

    Because Zelda Link to the Past is a perfect game.

    I know how ubiquitous it is, but I still replay it on a regular basis. Its perfectly designed, balanced, simple… Im not saying its superior to modern games or something stupid, I just think its pretty flawless. That is all.

    I would use a phone like this in a second, if any of my carriers released something like this. Is this design retro enough yet for some kind of nostalgic-cash in?
