Hey, y’all! Just another random, loudmouthed, opinionated, Southern-fried nerdy American living abroad.

I’m moving off kbin to lemmy, so I won’t be posting from here (unless kbin social gets it together).

stopthatgirl7 OP , to news in 'Power to communities': Chicago considers city-owned grocery store to address 'food deserts' after giants like Walmart and Whole Foods shutter stores

You have no idea what a food desert is like, and seem to think everyone can afford to just catch a bus across town or pay for Amazon Prime for free delivery (and oh the irony, screeching about “crime” then expecting people working multiple jobs to just get delivery, like those wouldn’t get stolen in your crime world - guess those all those criminals running rampant through grocery stores would leave packages sitting by a doorstep be, eh? 🙄)

I am begging you to actually read up on food deserts.

Is it “performative nonsense” because it’s Chicago, or was this city in Florida doing it years ago and this one in Kansas also “performative nonsense,” too?

That requires there having been a plan to begin with. He desperately tried to get out of buying Twitter. Now he’s flailing but trying to act like he knows what he’s doing.

stopthatgirl7 , to games in What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved?

I really wish we could get a port of Eternal Darkness. I know it’ll never happen, but one can dream.

Hands down, Devotion by Red Candle Games. It was only on sale for a week when it came out, and was getting well-deserved rave reviews, but was pulled because an idiot put in an art asset that said “Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh moron,” and Red Candle’s Chinese partner lost their business license and pulled the game from Steam. GOG was going to carry it, but they wimped out because Cyberpunk 2077 was about to come out in China, and they didn’t want to risk their sales, so they claimed “gamer voices” for why they were backtracking on carrying it, and refused to answer anyone asking them for details. The game is available, but only on Red Candle’s website,
but they were only able to get a store up and running after people had forgotten about the game.

It takes place in 1980s Taiwan, and is an amazing domestic horror - you play as the father, Du Feng Yu, cycling through three different years of his family falling apart, trying to figure out what happened to his young daughter. Some parts of it just hit way too hard, like this screaming argument between Du and his wife, when you’re playing as the daughter listening to it from her bedroom. It gets heavy. And then there’s the tongue thing. IYKYK.

I absolutely love this video by Jacob Geller, An Uncanny Really, looking at how Silent Hill 2 and Devotion handle the uncanny. Devotion absolutely deserves to be compared to Silent Hill 2.

This video, by Super Eyepatch Wolf, Devotion: The Most Disturbing Game You Can Not Play, is also really good, and opens with a lot of history for understanding Red Candle’s first game, Detention, which is also really good and takes place in a high school in Taiwan in the 60s during the White Terror.

Not everyone in poor areas has a car. Or easy access to one, or the spare money for gas to drive out of their way to find a grocery store.

Food deserts are most common in low socio-economic areas, where residents are unlikely to own a car or have one that is not always working.

stopthatgirl7 , to gaming in Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

Oh, I’m looking forward to finally getting to play the DLC! I have the game on PS4, not never bothered to get a 5 because I switched to PC gaming before they were easily available where I live, and now I don’t want one any more.

I’ll wait until it goes on sale, though, since I already paid full price once.

stopthatgirl7 OP , to worldnews in Unification Church demands Japan's NHK cancel 'insulting' program
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

A big reason for why people turned against the Unification Church wasn’t just because of the ties uncovered with politicians, it was because the news reported a LOT on the guy’s background and how the Unification Church had pretty much completely ruined his life by the way they suckered in his mom, which led to his brother attempting suicide because of their financial problems stemming from her giving so much money to them. The press almost accidentally turned the guy sympathetic, and public sentiment almost immediately turned against the Unification Church - suddenly there were all these articles and TV programs about people who had been financially taken advantage of by the Unification Church, and reporters started digging into the connection to politicians.

Had the guy shot his original target - he wanted to shoot someone high up in the Moonies at first and had tested out his gun by shooting at the Moonies’ headquarters at night, he ironically might not have been so successful in bringing the Unification Church down in Japan. Abe was killed because of opportunity (Abe coming down to Nara close to where the guy lived for the day), and since it didn’t initially make sense why someone who hated the Unification Church would kill Abe, who seemed unrelated other than his grandfather having allowed them in, there likely wouldn’t have been any digging into their connection to political figures.

stopthatgirl7 OP , (edited ) to technology in VR still makes 40-70% of players want to throw up, and that's a huge problem for the companies behind it
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

First person games also make me motion sick, for lack of a better word, because I’ve got permanently screwed proprioception (so less “sick,” more “horribly dizzy”), so I’ve never even dared try VR. I feel like the market is a lot more limited than companies might think it is.
